1. What is Philosophy? |

Philosophy comes from the Greek word ‘philosophia’, meaning ‘love of wisdom’. Rather than relying on experiments or observation alone, philosophers use reason and questioning to examine the most fundamental aspects of existence: What is real? How do we know things? How should we live? Philosophy encourages us to challenge assumptions and think critically about ideas we often take for granted.

A key method in philosophy is the Socratic method, named after the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates. Instead of giving direct answers, Socrates would ask a series of questions to help people discover contradictions in their own beliefs and move closer to the truth. This shows that philosophy is less about memorising facts and more about learning how to think.

2. Logic and Argument |

In philosophy, an argument is not a heated quarrel but a structured set of statements in which some statements (premises) are intended to support another statement (the conclusion). Recognising premises and conclusions is the first step in evaluating whether we should accept a claim.

Arguments can be deductive or inductive. In a deductive argument, if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. For example: ‘All humans are mortal; Socrates is human; therefore, Socrates is mortal.’ This is a valid argument. In an inductive argument, the premises make the conclusion probable but do not guarantee it, such as: ‘The sun has risen every day in recorded history; therefore, the sun will rise tomorrow.’

Concept Deductive Inductive
Strength Validity & soundness Strong & cogent
Certainty Guarantees conclusion Makes conclusion probable
Example All A are B. X is A. So X is B. Most A are B. X is A. So X is probably B.

A sound argument is a valid deductive argument with true premises. When evaluating philosophical reasoning, always ask: Are the premises true? Does the conclusion follow logically? These questions are the backbone of critical thinking.

3. Ethical Theories: Consequentialism |

Consequentialism claims that the rightness or wrongness of an action depends solely on its outcomes. The most famous version is utilitarianism, developed by Jeremy Bentham and later refined by John Stuart Mill. According to Bentham, we should act in a way that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. He proposed a ‘hedonic calculus’ to measure pleasure and pain based on factors such as intensity, duration, and certainty.

For a utilitarian, an action is morally right if it maximises overall well-being. This means sometimes telling a lie or breaking a promise could be considered right if it leads to a better outcome. Consequentialism therefore focuses on the future effects of our choices rather than on fixed rules.

4. Ethical Theories: Deontology |

Deontology, associated with Immanuel Kant, holds that some actions are right or wrong in themselves, regardless of their consequences. For Kant, moral laws are based on reason and must be followed out of duty. He introduced the ‘categorical imperative’: act only according to that maxim which you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.

If you consider telling a lie, you must ask yourself: Could I rationally want everyone to lie whenever it suits them? If the answer is no, then lying is morally forbidden by the categorical imperative. Another formulation of Kant’s principle is to treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, always as an end and never merely as a means. This means people have intrinsic dignity and should not be used only for your own gain.

5. The Mind-Body Problem |

The mind-body problem asks: What is the relationship between our mental states (thoughts, feelings, consciousness) and our physical bodies? Dualism, famously defended by René Descartes, asserts that the mind and body are two distinct substances. Descartes argued that while the body is extended in space and can be doubted, the mind is a thinking, non-extended thing whose existence cannot be doubted (‘I think, therefore I am’).

Physicalism, in contrast, says that mental states are entirely physical processes in the brain. According to this view, consciousness arises from neural activity, and there is no mysterious non-physical soul. Thought experiments like the ‘brain in a vat’ challenge us to consider whether our experiences could be entirely simulated by a computer, raising questions about the nature of reality and knowledge.

6. Knowledge: What Can We Know?

Epistemology is the branch of philosophy that studies knowledge. A traditional definition of knowledge is ‘justified true belief’: you know something if you believe it, it is true, and you have good reasons for believing it. However, philosophers have questioned whether this definition is sufficient, using examples where a belief is true and justified only by luck.

Two major schools of thought about where knowledge comes from are rationalism and empiricism. Rationalists, like Plato, believe that reason is the primary source of knowledge and that we can access truths about the world through pure thought. Plato’s theory of Forms suggests that the physical world is a shadow of a deeper, non-physical reality that the soul can grasp through reason. Empiricists, like John Locke, argue that all knowledge comes from sense experience; the mind at birth is a ‘tabula rasa’ (blank slate), and ideas are built up from sensory input.

7. Political Philosophy: Justice and Freedom |

Political philosophy examines how societies should be organised and what makes a government legitimate. Social contract theory, advanced by thinkers like Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, imagines that people in a ‘state of nature’ agree to form a government to protect their rights and ensure order. Hobbes believed a powerful sovereign was needed to prevent a life that would be ‘solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short’.

Modern debates about justice often focus on the work of John Rawls and Robert Nozick. Rawls argued that a just society is one that would be chosen behind a ‘veil of ignorance’, where no one knows their own social position. He proposed two principles: equal basic liberties for all, and social and economic inequalities arranged to benefit the least advantaged. Nozick, a libertarian, opposed this, claiming that individuals have absolute rights to their property, and that any redistribution through taxation is a violation of liberty.

8. Philosophy of Religion: Does God Exist? |

Philosophy of religion critically examines arguments for and against the existence of God. The teleological argument (argument from design) points to the apparent order and purpose in the universe. William Paley famously compared the universe to a watch: just as a watch’s complexity implies a watchmaker, the complexity of living organisms implies an intelligent designer.

The cosmological argument, defended by Thomas Aquinas, starts from the fact that things exist and seeks a first cause. Aquinas argued that there cannot be an infinite chain of causes, so there must be an uncaused first cause, which he identified as God. Against these arguments stands the problem of evil: if an all-powerful, all-knowing, and perfectly good God exists, why is there so much suffering in the world? This challenge forces believers to reconsider the nature of God’s attributes and the possibility of free will.

9. Free Will and Determinism |

The debate over free will asks whether we genuinely control our choices. Determinism is the view that every event, including human actions, is caused by prior events in accordance with the laws of nature. If the universe is deterministic, then everything we do could in principle be predicted with enough information. This seems to conflict with the idea that we are morally responsible for our actions.

Compatibilism is the position that free will and determinism can coexist. Compatibilists argue that free will should be understood not as the ability to act without any cause, but as the ability to act according to one’s own desires and beliefs without external coercion. Incompatibilists, by contrast, insist that true free will requires the ability to have done otherwise in the exact same circumstances. This position often leads to libertarianism about free will, which rejects determinism. The thought experiment of Laplace’s demon (a being who knows all past and present states of the universe) is used to illustrate the tension between determinism and freedom.

10. Personal Identity |

Personal identity asks what makes you the same person over time, despite physical and psychological changes. One classical answer is the memory theory, linked to John Locke. According to this view, a person at a later time is identical to a person at an earlier time if the later person remembers the experiences of the earlier one. This means your identity is carried by your chain of memories.

However, memory theory faces objections. What if someone forgets most of their childhood? Does that mean they are not the same person as the child they once were? The body continuity theory suggests that physical continuity is what matters; you remain the same person because your body is a continuous living organism. Yet thought experiments like the Ship of Theseus (if a ship’s planks are gradually replaced, is it still the same ship?) challenge us to think about the nature of identity when everything changes. These puzzles show how philosophy can make even our most familiar assumptions feel deeply puzzling.
