1. What is Philosophy? |

Philosophy is the study of fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, reason, and language. It encourages critical thinking and the careful analysis of arguments. Philosophers ask ‘Why?’ and ‘How do we know?’ rather than just accepting things at face value.

In Year 8, you will explore different branches of philosophy: ethics (right and wrong), epistemology (knowledge), metaphysics (reality), and logic (reasoning). These branches help you understand the world from multiple perspectives.

2. Logic and Argumentation |

Logic is the backbone of philosophy. An argument is not a fight but a set of statements where some (premises) support a conclusion. For example: ‘All humans are mortal (premise); Socrates is a human (premise); therefore, Socrates is mortal (conclusion).’

A valid argument is one where if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. A sound argument is valid and has true premises. Recognizing fallacies—common errors in reasoning—is also crucial. Examples include ad hominem (attacking the person instead of the argument) and false dichotomy (presenting only two options when more exist).

A common logical form is modus ponens:

Modus Ponens: P → Q, P, ∴ Q

3. Knowledge and Belief |

Epistemology asks: What is knowledge? Traditionally, knowledge is justified true belief. You believe something, it is true, and you have good reasons (justification) for believing it. But is that enough? The Gettier problem challenges this definition with cases where justified true belief seems to not count as knowledge.

We also distinguish between a priori knowledge (known independently of experience, like 2+2=4) and a posteriori knowledge (dependent on experience, like knowing it is raining outside). Skepticism questions whether we can truly know anything at all.

Type
类型
Definition
定义
Example
例子
A priori
先验
Known independently of experience
‘All bachelors are unmarried’
A posteriori
后验
Known dependent on experience
‘The sky is blue’

4. The Problem of Evil |

The problem of evil is a classic argument against the existence of an all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-good God. If God is all-powerful, he could prevent evil; if all-good, he would want to; yet evil exists. Therefore, such a God might not exist.

Theodicies are attempts to justify God’s goodness despite evil. The free will defence argues that evil results from human misuse of free will, which is a greater good. The soul-making theodicy suggests that suffering helps us grow morally and spiritually.

5. Free Will and Determinism |

Do we have free will, or is everything predetermined? Determinism states that all events, including human actions, are caused by prior events in accordance with natural laws. This challenges moral responsibility, because if our actions are predetermined, can we be held accountable?

Compatibilism argues that free will and determinism can coexist. It redefines free will as acting according to one’s desires without external coercion, even if those desires are determined. Libertarianism insists that we have genuine, undetermined free will.

6. Personal Identity |

What makes you the same person over time? The body theory says physical continuity is the key, but thought experiments like the Ship of Theseus challenge this: if all your cells are gradually replaced, are you still you? The psychological continuity theory focuses on memories, personality, and consciousness, as in Locke’s memory theory. But what about amnesia or brain transplants? These ideas are explored through engaging scenarios.

Derek Parfit’s teletransportation thought experiment asks: if you are scanned and an exact copy created on Mars while the original is destroyed, does the copy continue your personal identity? This raises questions about the importance of psychological connectedness.

7. Ethics: Right and Wrong |

Ethics explores how we ought to live. Major theories include:

  • Utilitarianism: the greatest happiness for the greatest number.
  • Deontology: duty-based ethics (e.g., Kant’s categorical imperative: act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law).
  • Virtue Ethics: focus on character and virtues like courage and honesty.

Applied ethics uses these theories to address real-life dilemmas: Is lying ever justified? Should we eat animals? What are our obligations to the poor? You will learn to construct ethical arguments and evaluate moral situations from different perspectives.

8. The Mind-Body Problem |

What is the relationship between the mind and the body? Dualism, defended by Descartes, claims that mind and body are separate substances—the mind is non-physical and the body physical. Interactionism tries to explain how they interact, but faces the problem of how a non-physical mind can move the physical body.

Materialism (or physicalism) asserts that everything is physical, and mental states are brain states. The identity theory says that pain just is C-fibres firing. Functionalism holds that mental states are defined by their functional roles. These are all part of the core philosophy journey.

9. Reality and Appearance |

How do we know that the world is as it appears? Plato’s Allegory of the Cave suggests that we are like prisoners seeing only shadows on a wall, mistaking appearances for reality. The real world, the world of Forms, is accessible only through reason.

Berkeley’s idealism claims that to be is to be perceived (esse est percipi). Objects only exist as ideas in minds. A radical view, but it forces us to question our assumptions about an external material world.

10. Exam Skills for Philosophy |

To excel in Year 8 CIE Philosophy exams, you need to master both knowledge and evaluation. For a typical ‘Discuss’ or ‘Do you agree?’ question, start by explaining key concepts and theories clearly. Then present arguments for and against the view. Always support points with examples and philosophical terminology.

Time management is essential. Allocate
