1. Parts of Speech | 词性

Every word in English belongs to a category called a part of speech. Knowing these labels helps you understand how sentences are built and how meaning is created.

英语中的每个单词都属于一种称为词性的类别。了解这些标签有助于理解句子是如何构建的,以及含义是如何产生的。

The eight main parts of speech are: noun (person, place, thing, idea), pronoun (replaces a noun), verb (action or state), adjective (describes a noun), adverb (describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb), preposition (shows relationship of place or time), conjunction (joins words or clauses), and interjection (expresses strong emotion).

八种主要词性是:名词(人、地点、事物、想法)、代词(代替名词)、动词(动作或状态)、形容词(修饰名词)、副词(修饰动词、形容词或其他副词)、介词(表示地点或时间关系)、连词(连接单词或从句)和感叹词(表达强烈情感)。

Part of Speech Example 词性 示例
Noun freedom 名词 自由
Pronoun they 代词 他们
Adjective melancholy 形容词 忧郁的
Adverb cautiously 副词 谨慎地
Preposition beneath 介词 在……之下
Conjunction although 连词 虽然

2. Sentence Types | 句子类型

English sentences can be classified by their structure. Mastering these four types gives you control over pace and complexity in your writing.

英语句子可以根据结构分类。掌握这四种类型能让你在写作中控制节奏和复杂性。

A simple sentence has one independent clause. A compound sentence joins two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or). A complex sentence contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause. A compound-complex sentence combines two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.

简单句含有一个独立分句。并列句用并列连词(and, but, or)连接两个独立分句。复合句包含一个独立分句和至少一个从属分句。并列复合句结合了两个或更多独立分句以及至少一个从属分句。

Simple: The storm raged. | 简单句:暴风雨肆虐。

Compound: The storm raged, but the lighthouse stood firm. | 并列句:暴风雨肆虐,但灯塔屹立不倒。

Complex: Although the storm raged, the lighthouse stood firm. | 复合句:尽管暴风雨肆虐,灯塔仍屹立不倒。

3. Punctuation Marks | 标点符号

Punctuation works like road signs for your reader. Use this table to check the core marks and their functions.

标点符号就像是给读者的路标。使用下表检查核心符号及其功能。

Mark Name Key rule 符号 名称 关键规则
. Full stop Ends a statement 句号 句点 结束陈述句
, Comma Separates items, clauses or adds a pause 逗号 逗号 分隔项目、从句或表示停顿
Apostrophe Shows possession or contraction 撇号 撇号 表示所有格或缩写
; Semicolon Joins two related independent clauses 分号 分号 连接两个相关的独立分句
: Colon Introduces a list or explanation 冒号 冒号 引出列表或解释

Remember: the apostrophe in “the dog’s lead” shows possession (the lead of the dog), while in “it’s raining” it shows the contraction of “it is”.

记住:“the dog’s lead”中的撇号表示所有格(狗的牵引绳),而“it’s raining”中的撇号表示“it is”的缩写。

4. Figurative Language | 修辞手法

Writers use figurative language to create vivid images and deeper meaning. The three most common tools are simile, metaphor and personification.

作家使用修辞手法来创造生动的画面和更深层的含义。最常见的三种工具是明喻、暗喻和拟人。

A simile compares two things using “like” or “as”. A metaphor states that one thing is another, without using “like” or “as”. Personification gives human qualities to non-human things. Being able to spot and explain these can lift your analysis from basic to insightful.

明喻用“like”或“as”来比较两件事物。暗喻则直接说一事物是另一事物,不使用“like”或“as”。拟人赋予非人之物人的特性。能够识别并解释这些手法,可以让你的分析从基础层面提升到深刻见解。

  • Simile: “The wrestler was as tough as old leather.” 明喻: “那个摔跤手像旧皮革一样坚韧。”
  • Metaphor: “Time is a thief.” 暗喻: “时间是贼。”
  • Personification: “The wind whispered through the trees.” 拟人: “风在树间低语。”

5. Sound Devices | 语音修饰手法

Sound devices are the “music” of language, often found in poetry but also in prose. They create rhythm, mood and emphasis.

语音修饰手法是语言的“音乐”,常见于诗歌,但也出现在散文中。它们营造节奏、氛围和强调效果。

Alliteration is the repetition of the same sound at the start of nearby words. Onomatopoeia is when a word imitates the sound it represents. Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds inside words. Sibilance is a specific type of alliteration using ‘s’ or ‘sh’ sounds to create a hissing effect.

头韵是指相邻单词开头重复相同的音。拟声词是词语模仿它所代表的声音。元音韵是单词内部元音的重复。咝音是一种特殊的头韵,使用’s’或’sh’音来产生嘶嘶的效果。

Alliteration: “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.” | 头韵: “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.”

Onomatopoeia: “The bees buzzed busily.” | 拟声: “蜜蜂嗡嗡地忙碌着。”

6. Narrative Perspectives | 叙事视角

The point of view from which a story is told shapes everything the reader knows. It is one of the first choices a writer makes.

故事讲述的视角决定了读者所知道的一切。这是作者最早做出的选择之一。

First person uses “I” or “we” and gives direct access to the narrator’s thoughts and feelings. Second person uses “you” and addresses the reader directly, which is rare in fiction but common in instructional writing. Third person uses “he”, “she”, “they”; it can be limited (focusing on one character’s thoughts) or omniscient (all-knowing, seeing into multiple characters’ minds).

第一人称使用“我”或“我们”,直接呈现叙述者的思想和感受。第二人称使用“你”,直接对读者说话,这在小说中少见,但在说明性写作中常见。第三人称使用“他”、“她”、“他们”;它可以是受限的(聚焦于一个人物的思想),也可以是全知的(知晓一切,洞察多个人物的内心)。

When analysing a text, ask yourself: “How would the story change if it were told from a different perspective?”

分析文本时,问问自己:“如果从不同的视角讲述,故事会发生怎样的变化?”

7. Structural Devices | 结构技巧

Structure refers to how a text is organised. In the Edexcel exam, you may need to comment on the whole-text structure, not just content.

结构指的是文本的组织方式。在爱德思考试中,你可能需要评论文本的整体结构,而不仅仅是内容。

Common structural devices include: chronological order (events in time sequence), flashback (a shift to an earlier event), foreshadowing (hints of what is to come), cliffhanger (an ending that leaves the reader in suspense), and cyclical structure (the story ends where it began). Shifts in focus, such as a change in setting or a move from external action to internal thought, are also important structural choices to notice.

常见的结构手法包括:时间顺序(按时间先后排列事件)、倒叙(转向之前发生的事件)、铺垫(对未来事件的暗示)、悬念式结尾(让读者悬着心的结局)以及环形结构(故事结束于开始的地方)。焦点的转移,比如场景的变化或从外部动作转向内心活动,也是值得注意的重要结构选择。

8. Understanding Poetry | 诗歌理解

Poems have their own “formulas”. Knowing the vocabulary of poetry helps you unlock meaning and appreciate the craft.

诗歌有其自身的“公式”。掌握诗歌词汇有助于你解读含义并欣赏创作技巧。

A stanza is a group of lines, like a paragraph in prose. A couplet is a two-line stanza that often rhymes. Rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhymes at the end of lines, usually labelled with letters (e.g. ABAB). Enjambment is when a sentence runs over from one line to the next without a pause. Rhythm is the beat created by the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables.

诗节是一组诗行,就像散文中的段落。对句是两行的诗节,通常押韵。韵式是行末押韵的模式,通常用字母标记(如ABAB)。跨行是指句子没有停顿就从一行延续到下一行。节奏是由重读和非重读音节的模式产生的节拍。

A useful formula for analysing a poem: What is the poem about? (subject) → What mood or feelings does it create? (tone) → What techniques does the poet use? (language/structure) → Why might the poet have written it? (message).

分析诗歌的实用公式:这首诗讲了什么?(主题)→ 它营造了怎样的氛围或情感?(语气)→ 诗人使用了什么技巧?(语言/结构)→ 诗人为什么写这首诗?(主旨)。

9. Persuasive Techniques | 说服技巧

Whether you are analysing an advertisement or writing a speech, recognizing persuasive techniques gives you power. The acronym “AFOREST” is a handy formula.

无论你是在分析广告还是撰写演讲稿,识别说服技巧都能赋予你力量。首字母缩写“AFOREST”是一个方便的公式。

AFOREST stands for: Alliteration, Facts, Opinions, Rhetorical questions, Emotive language, Statistics, and Triples (rule of three). Each technique appeals to the reader or listener in a different way: facts and statistics build logos (logical appeal), emotive language and personal anecdotes build pathos (emotional appeal), and rhetorical questions engage the audience directly.

AFOREST代表:头韵、事实、观点、反问句、情感语言、数据和三法则(三句式)。每种技巧以不同的方式吸引读者或听众:事实和数据建立逻辑诉求,情感语言和个人轶事建立情感诉求,而反问句则直接吸引听众。

Example triple: “It was the most thrilling, terrifying, and transformative moment of my life.”

三句式示例:“那是我一生中最激动人心、最可怕、最具变革性的时刻。”

10. Common Spelling Rules | 常见拼写规则

Spelling patterns are the “number facts” of English. These rules cover most situations, though English always has exceptions.

拼写模式相当于英语中的“数字常识”。这些规则涵盖了大多数情况,尽管英语总有例外。

Rule: i before e, except after c, when the sound is /ee/. Example: believe (i before e), receive (except after c). Rule: For words ending in a consonant plus y, change the y to i before adding -es or -ed. Example: hurry → hurried, baby → babies. Rule: When adding -ing or -ed, double the final consonant after a short vowel in a one-syllable word. Example: hop → hopped, sit → sitting.

规则:i在e之前,除非在c之后,且发音为/ee/。示例:believe(i在e前),receive(c后除外)。规则:以辅音加y结尾的单词,在添加-es或-ed前将y改为i。示例:hurry → hurried,baby → babies。规则:单音节词中短元音后加-ing或-ed时,双写最后的辅音字母。示例:hop → hopped,sit → sitting。

Be careful with homophones: words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings, such as “their/there/they’re”. Always proofread for these.

注意同音异义词:那些发音相同但拼写和意义不同的词,比如“their/there/they’re”。每次都要仔细校对这类词。

11. Paragraph Structure (PEEL) | 段落结构 (PEEL)

The PEEL paragraph is the classic formula for analytical writing. It ensures every paragraph is focused, well-supported, and linked to the question.

PEEL段落是分析性写作的经典公式。它确保每个段落都重点突出、有据可依,并与问题紧密相连。

PEEL stands for: Point (make your main statement), Evidence (provide a quotation or example), Explanation (analyse how the evidence supports your point, exploring language and effect), and Link (connect back to the question or forward to the next paragraph). Some versions use “L” for Link, others add a second “E” for Evaluation or Effect. Mastering PEEL is essential for GCSE success.

PEEL代表:观点(提出你的主要论断),证据(提供引文或示例),解释(分析证据如何支撑你的观点,探究语言和效果),以及连接(回扣问题或过渡到下一段)。有些版本用“L”表示连接,有些则增加第二个“E”表示评估或效果。掌握PEEL对于GCSE成功至关重要。

Example PEEL sentence starters: P: The writer presents… E: This is shown when… E: The word “…” suggests… L: Therefore, the reader understands that…

PEEL句式开头示例:P: 作者呈现了…… E: 这一点体现在…… E: “……”这个词暗示了…… L: 因此,读者理解到……

12. Tenses at a Glance | 时态速览

Consistent and accurate use of tense is vital for clarity. This table shows the three main times and their four aspects.

时态的一致和准确使用对于清晰表达至关重要。下表展示了三个主要时间和它们的四种体。

Time Simple Progressive (continuous) Perfect 时间 一般 进行 完成
Present I walk I am walking I have walked 现在 我走路 我正在走路 我已经走了
Past I walked I was walking I had walked 过去 我曾走 我当时正在走 我曾经已经走了
Future I will walk I will be walking I will have walked 将来 我将走路 我将正在走路 我将已经走了

Always check that your tense stays consistent unless there is a clear reason to shift time. For literary analysis, the present tense is typically used (“Shakespeare presents…” not “Shakespeare presented…”).

除非有明确的转换时间的理由,否则务必检查时态保持一致。在文学分析中,通常使用现在时(“Shakespeare presents…”而不是“Shakespeare presented…”)。
