1. What is Media Studies? |
Media Studies is the academic discipline that explores how media texts communicate meaning. A ‘text’ in this subject can be anything from a blockbuster movie and a newspaper article to a TikTok video or a game. We examine the language, audiences, industries and representations behind these texts. Unlike simply consuming media for entertainment, studying media means asking critical questions: Who created this, and why? What techniques are used to grab my attention? How might different people interpret the same message? Throughout Year 8, you will begin to answer these questions using a systematic approach.
At Edexcel, the media curriculum encourages you to become a thoughtful and active consumer of media. You will learn to ‘read’ images, sounds and narratives in a way that reveals the hidden decisions made by producers. This subject combines elements of art, English, sociology and technology, making it a truly cross-curricular adventure.
2. Key Media Forms and Platforms |
Media Studies covers a wide range of forms, each with its own conventions. The main media forms you will encounter in Year 8 include: film, television, advertising, music videos, newspapers, magazines, social media (such as Instagram and TikTok), and video games. For Edexcel, you will often be asked to compare how a story is told across different platforms – for example, how a film trailer on YouTube uses a different approach than a poster at a bus stop.
Understanding different platforms is essential because the same content can take on new meanings when moved from a cinema screen to a smartphone. For instance, a horror film scene might feel terrifying in a dark cinema with surround sound, but watching the same clip on a small phone screen while scrolling through social media might lessen the fear and change your engagement. Your summer task is to notice how many different media forms you encounter in a single day.
3. Media Language: Signs, Codes and Conventions |
Every media text is constructed using a language of signs. In Media Studies, a sign is anything that conveys meaning – a colour, a gesture, a sound, an object. The study of signs is called semiotics. You will learn about the signifier (the form the sign takes) and the signified (the concept it represents). For example, a red rose (signifier) can signify romance or love (signified). Codes are systems of signs that create meaning. There are technical codes (camera work, lighting) and symbolic codes (body language, clothing). Conventions are the generally accepted ways of doing things, such as a news bulletin starting with a serious presenter behind a desk.
The Edexcel specification expects you to confidently use terms like denotation (the literal description of what you see) and connotation (the deeper, associated meanings). When analysing a magazine cover, you first denote the elements: a smiling celebrity, a bright yellow background. Then you explore connotations: the yellow might connote warmth, happiness, or energy; the smile could connote approachability or insincerity depending on context. Practise this with everyday images during the summer.
4. Camera Shots and Angles: Building Visual Narratives |
Camera techniques are a vital part of the technical code. By understanding different shots and angles, you can explain how a director guides the audience’s attention and emotions. A close-up shot focuses tightly on a person’s face to reveal their feelings, while an extreme long shot shows the vastness of a landscape, making characters appear small and vulnerable. A high-angle shot looks down on a subject, often making them seem weak, whereas a low-angle shot looks up and can make a character appear powerful or threatening.
