1. Energy Forms and Energy Transfer | 能量形式与能量转移

Energy is the ability to do work and is measured in joules (J). In physics, energy is thought to be stored in different ‘stores’ such as kinetic energy, gravitational potential energy, thermal (internal) energy, chemical energy, elastic potential energy, and nuclear energy. When something happens, energy is transferred from one store to another.

Energy can be transferred by four main pathways: by forces doing work (mechanically), by electric currents (electrically), by heating, and by radiation (such as light and sound). For example, when you lift a book, you transfer energy from your chemical store to the book’s gravitational potential store mechanically.

A common way to show energy transfers is using a flowchart or a Sankey diagram, in which the width of arrows represents the amount of energy transferred. Sankey diagrams also show how much energy is useful and how much is wasted (dissipated) to the surroundings.

2. Conservation of Energy and Efficiency | 能量守恒与效率

The law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be transferred or converted from one form to another. The total amount of energy in a closed system remains constant.

能量守恒定律指出,能量不能被创造或消灭;它只能从一种形式转移或转化为另一种形式。在一个封闭系统中,能量的总量保持恒定。

In any energy transfer, some energy is always dissipated (spread out) as thermal energy to the surroundings. This wasted energy is not useful and makes processes less efficient. Efficiency is calculated as:

Efficiency = useful output energy ÷ total input energy

Efficiency can be expressed as a decimal or a percentage. For instance, a light bulb that converts 10 J of electrical energy into 8 J of light and 2 J of heat has an efficiency of 8 ÷ 10 = 0.8 or 80%.
