Year 8 Edexcel Psychology: Key Concepts Overview | 8

📚 Year 8 Edexcel Psychology: Key Concepts Overview | 8

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour, covering everything from how we remember a phone number to why we follow a crowd. This guide pulls together the core concepts you will encounter in Year 8 Edexcel Psychology, giving you a clear overview of each topic with paired English and Chinese explanations. Use it to strengthen your understanding and prepare for assessments.

1. What is Psychology? |

Psychology comes from the Greek words ‘psyche’ (mind) and ‘logos’ (study). It is the systematic investigation of how people think, feel and act.

Psychologists study both observable behaviour, such as speaking or walking, and internal mental processes, like memory, attention and emotion. They use empirical evidence rather than everyday beliefs.

The discipline is often divided into areas: cognitive (thinking), social (groups), developmental (lifespan changes), biological (brain and body) and individual differences (personality). In Year 8 you will touch on all these.

2. The Scientific Method in Psychology |

Psychologists follow the scientific method: they observe, create a hypothesis, test it, analyse the data and draw conclusions. A hypothesis is a precise, testable prediction about the outcome of a study.

Key variables must be operalisation defined. The independent variable (IV) is what the researcher changes; the dependent variable (DV) is what is measured. For example, if we test whether noise affects memory, noise is the IV and recall score is the DV.

Extraneous variables, such as room temperature or participant mood, must be controlled or kept constant so they do not affect the DV. A well‑controlled study allows cause‑and‑effect conclusions.

3. Research Methods: Experiments and Observations |

A laboratory experiment is conducted in a controlled setting. It has high internal validity because the researcher can isolate the IV. However, it may lack ecological validity as the situation is artificial.

A field experiment takes place in a natural environment, such as a school playground. Participants often do not know they are being watched, which can lead to more realistic behaviour but makes it harder to control extraneous variables.

Observational studies simply record behaviour without manipulation. A naturalistic observation captures spontaneous actions, while a controlled observation might take place in a lab setting. Both are useful where experiments would be impractical or unethical.

4. Memory: The Multi‑Store Model |

Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968) proposed the multi‑store model, which describes memory as three separate stores: sensory register, short‑term memory (STM) and long‑term memory (LTM).

Information enters the sensory register through our senses. It lasts only a fraction of a second unless we pay attention to it. Once attended, it transfers to STM.

STM has a limited capacity of about 7±2 items and holds information for around 18–30 seconds. Rehearsal — repeating the information — can maintain it in STM and eventually transfer it to LTM.

LTM is potentially unlimited in capacity and duration. Memories are stored in semantic (meaning), episodic (events) and procedural (skills) forms. Retrieval is the process of getting information back into STM when needed.

5. Social Influence: Conformity and Obedience |

Conformity is a change in behaviour or belief to fit in with a group. Solomon Asch (1951) found that people would give an obviously wrong answer about line lengths if confederates gave the same wrong answer first.

Two types of conformity: normative social influence — wanting to be liked and accepted — and informational social influence — believing the group knows better. Asch’s study mainly showed normative influence.

Obedience involves following a direct order from an authority figure. Stanley Milgram (1963) showed that ordinary people could be led to deliver what they thought were painful electric shocks to a learner, simply because an authority figure instructed them.

Both conformity and obedience can lead to positive and negative outcomes. Understanding them helps explain historical events as well as everyday peer pressure.

6. Attachment Theory: Bowlby and Ainsworth |

John Bowlby argued that infants have an innate need to form a strong emotional bond with a caregiver. This attachment provides a secure base from which to explore the world and is crucial for later emotional development.

John Bowlby

Bowlby’s “maternal deprivation hypothesis” stated that prolonged separation from the primary caregiver during the critical period (first two years) could lead to long‑term emotional and social difficulties.

Mary Ainsworth used the Strange Situation procedure to identify three attachment styles: secure (explores, upset when caregiver leaves, happy at reunion), insecure‑avoidant (ignores caregiver, avoids contact) and insecure‑resistant (clings, angry at reunion).

Mary Ainsworth

Cultural variations exist; the distribution of attachment types differs across countries, reminding us that caregiving practices are not universal.

7. Cognitive Development: Piaget’s Stages |

Jean Piaget believed that children actively construct their understanding of the world through schemas — mental frameworks that grow and adapt. His theory divides cognitive development into four stages.

Jean Piaget

The sensorimotor stage (0–2 years): infants learn through senses and actions. They develop object permanence — understanding that objects continue to exist even when out of sight.

The preoperational stage (2–7 years): children use symbols and language but are egocentric — they struggle to see others’ viewpoints. They also lack conservation, not realising that quantity remains the same when appearance changes.

The concrete operational stage (7–11 years): logical reasoning about physical objects emerges. Children master conservation and can classify objects, but they think best about real, tangible situations.

The formal operational stage (11+ years): adolescents can think abstractly, reason hypothetically and plan for the future. Not everyone fully reaches this stage.

8. Learning Theory: Classical Conditioning |

Ivan Pavlov discovered classical conditioning while studying dogs’ salivation. He noticed dogs began to salivate when they saw the lab assistant who normally fed them, even without food.

Ivan Pavlov

The unconditioned stimulus (UCS) is food, which naturally triggers the unconditioned response (UCR) of salivation. A neutral stimulus, such as a bell, becomes the conditioned stimulus (CS) when paired repeatedly with the UCS. The salivation triggered by the bell alone is the conditioned response (CR).

Classical conditioning explains many emotional responses, such as phobias. If a neutral object is paired with a frightening event, the object itself can later provoke fear.

9. Learning Theory: Operant Conditioning |

B.F. Skinner demonstrated that behaviour is shaped by consequences. He used a Skinner box to show that rats and pigeons could learn to press levers or peck discs for rewards.

Positive reinforcement means giving something pleasant (e.g., praise) to increase a behaviour. Negative reinforcement means removing something unpleasant (e.g., stopping a nagging noise) to increase a behaviour. Both strengthen the behaviour they follow.

Punishment is designed to decrease a behaviour. Positive punishment adds an unpleasant consequence (e.g., extra chores), while negative punishment removes something desirable (e.g., taking away a phone).

Skinner emphasised that reinforcement is more effective long‑term than punishment. Partial reinforcement schedules (e.g., giving a reward only some of the time) make learned behaviours more resistant to extinction.

10. Ethics in Psychological Research |

Psychologists follow strict ethical guidelines to protect participants. In the UK, the British Psychological Society (BPS) sets out rules that all researchers must respect.

Informed consent: participants should know the purpose of the study, what they will do and agree to take part without pressure. For children under 16, parental consent is required.

Deception should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. If a study involves mild deception, participants must be fully debriefed afterwards and given the right to withdraw their data.

Protection from harm: participants must leave a study in the same physical and psychological state in which they arrived. Risk of distress, embarrassment or injury must be minimal.

Confidentiality: personal data must be kept anonymous. No individual should be identifiable from published results. Researchers also respect the participants’ right to withdraw at any time.
