1. Elements of Drama |

Drama is built from a set of elements that work together to create meaning for an audience. Recognising and controlling these elements helps you shape a performance with clarity and impact.

Role and character: who you are in the drama. You may step into a specific character with a given background, or adopt a role such as a reporter, a parent or a historical figure. Every choice you make should serve that character’s identity.

Relationship: how characters connect to one another. Status, friendship, rivalry and family bonds can all be communicated through physical positioning, eye contact and vocal tone.

Tension: the sense of anticipation, conflict or pressure that keeps the audience engaged. It can arise from a ticking clock, a hidden secret or a character’s inner struggle. Without tension, a scene can feel flat.

Focus: drawing and directing the audience’s attention. You can achieve focus through stillness, a sudden movement, a lighting change or by having one character speak while others freeze.

Mood and atmosphere: the overall feeling of a scene. Lighting, sound, colour, pace and the weight of performers’ movements all contribute to whether a moment feels joyful, eerie, tense or calm.

Space and time: where and when the action takes place. Levels, proxemics and set pieces indicate space, while dialogue, lighting and costume often signal time period.

2. Vocal Skills |

Your voice is one of the most flexible tools you have on stage. Adjusting vocal qualities allows you to show emotion, suggest status and build tension.

Pitch: how high or low your voice sounds. A higher pitch can signal excitement, fear or youth; a lower pitch can suggest authority, menace or sadness.

Pace: the speed at which you speak. Quick speech can reveal panic, excitement or nervousness, while a slower pace often creates suspense, seriousness or calm.

Pause: a deliberate stop in the flow of speech. Pauses can emphasise a word, build tension before a revelation or give the audience time to absorb a key moment.

Tone: the emotional quality of your voice. A warm tone can convey kindness, while a sharp, clipped tone can suggest anger or impatience.

Volume: how loud or soft you speak. Projecting your voice ensures you are heard, but deliberately lowering your volume can draw the audience in and create intimacy.

Articulation and diction: how clearly you pronounce words. Clear diction is essential so that the audience understands every word of your performance.

3. Physical and Non-Verbal Skills |

What your body does on stage can be as important as what you say. Physical skills reveal character, emotion and relationships without a single word.

Gesture: a movement of the hands or arms that communicates meaning. A shrug can show confusion, a pointed finger can signal accusation.

Facial expression: the use of your face to show feelings. Raised eyebrows can suggest surprise, a furrowed brow can indicate worry, and a genuine smile can radiate joy.

Posture: how you hold your body. An upright, open posture often signals confidence or high status, whereas a hunched, closed posture can suggest insecurity or low status.

Gait: the way you walk. Heavy, stomping steps can show anger; light, quick steps might convey excitement or anxiety.

Eye contact: where you direct your gaze. Sustaining eye contact can build connection or challenge another character, while avoiding eye contact can suggest guilt, shyness or deceit.

Body language and stillness: how you use your whole body. Sometimes the most powerful choice is complete stillness, which can create tension, show restraint or focus attention on another performer.

4. Characterisation |

Creating a believable character takes more than just learning lines. You need to understand what drives your character and how they react to the world around them.

Objective: what your character wants in a scene. A clear objective gives you purpose; every line and movement can then work towards achieving that goal.

Motivation: why your character wants it. Understanding the reason behind the objective adds depth and helps you make more specific acting choices.

Given circumstances: the background details provided by the script or devised piece, such as age, occupation, location, time period and relationships. Use these to root your performance in a believable world.

Emotional recall: drawing on your own experiences to find a truthful emotional response. Used carefully, this technique can make your performance more authentic.

Hot seating: a rehearsal exercise where you sit in character and answer questions from others. It helps you think on your feet and build a fuller picture of your character’s life.

5. Space, Levels and Proxemics |

How you use the performance area can tell a story on its own. Thoughtful use of space and levels adds visual interest and communicates relationships without words.

Levels: the height at which you perform. Standing on a platform, sitting on the floor or crouching creates visual variety and can indicate power shifts; high level often reads as more dominant.

Proxemics: the distance between performers. Intimate distance (very close) suggests secrecy or affection, personal distance suits conversations, social distance works for formal interactions, and public distance can make a character feel isolated or powerful.

Stage areas: upstage, centre stage and downstage each have different impact. Downstage feels closer and more intimate to the audience; upstage can create a sense of distance or mystery. Keep yourself open to the audience unless a deliberate choice demands otherwise.

Blocking: the planned movement and positioning of performers. Thoughtful blocking ensures the stage picture is balanced, sightlines are clear and the focus is always where it should be.

6. Tension, Focus and Mood |

These three elements are the engine of an engaging performance. When you control tension, hold focus and shape mood, you take the audience on an emotional journey.
