1. What Is Media Studies? |

Media Studies is the exploration of how media products – such as films, magazines, websites, advertisements and video games – are made, how they communicate meaning, and how audiences understand them. It encourages you to become a critical thinker rather than a passive consumer.

The subject is built around four key areas, often remembered as MRAI: Media Language, Representation, Audience, and Institution. Each area provides a lens for analysing any media text.

In Year 8, you will apply these ideas to texts ranging from print advertisements to film trailers and social media feeds, and you will also plan and produce your own practical media product.

2. Media Language: Signs and Codes |

Media language refers to the ‘toolkit’ used to create meaning. This includes visual codes (images, colours, lighting), audio codes (sound, music), and technical codes (camera work, editing). A sign is anything that carries meaning – for example, a skull often signifies danger or death.

Understanding the difference between denotation and connotation is crucial. Denotation is the literal, obvious meaning (a picture of a rose is just a flower). Connotation is the deeper, associated meaning (the rose might connote romance, love, or even secrecy).

When you analyse a text, always ask: what codes can I see or hear? What do they denote? What do they connote? This process is called semiotic analysis.

3. Visual Codes: Camera Shots, Angles and Composition |

Camera shots and angles are not chosen randomly – they help tell the story and shape our feelings towards characters. A close-up concentrates on a character’s face to reveal emotion, while an extreme long shot can show the vastness of a location and make the character seem isolated.

The following table summarises the most common shot types and the impressions they create.

Shot Type Effect in English
Close-up Shows facial expression and inner emotion
Medium shot Natural, allows body language to be seen
Long shot Shows the full figure and setting, establishing context
High angle Makes the subject appear small, weak or vulnerable
Low angle Makes the subject appear powerful, commanding or threatening

Lighting and colour are equally important. High-key lighting (bright, even illumination) suggests joy, openness or safety. Low-key lighting (strong contrasts, deep shadows) creates suspense, mystery or fear. Colour palettes in costumes and sets also carry connotations – red can mean danger or passion, while blue often suggests calm or sadness.

4. Audio Codes: Sound and Music |

Sound is often overlooked but it profoundly shapes how we experience a media text. Audio codes are divided into diegetic sound (sound that exists within the story world, such as footsteps, dialogue, a car engine) and non-diegetic sound (sound added for the audience’s benefit, such as a film score, voice-over narration or a laugh track).

A sound bridge (carrying a sound from one scene into the next) can smooth transitions, while a leitmotif – a recurring musical phrase associated with a character or idea – can build emotional recognition. Sound also adds realism and can signal genre: a sudden, high-pitched violin note often marks a thriller or horror moment.

5. Narrative Theories |

Stories in media rarely unfold randomly; they follow structures that audiences recognise and enjoy. Todorov’s narrative theory describes five stages: a state of equilibrium (balance), a disruption of that order by an event, a recognition that disorder has occurred, an attempt to repair the damage, and a new equilibrium.

Vladimir Propp studied Russian folktales and identified seven character types that often appear: the hero, the villain, the donor (who gives something to help), the helper, the princess (a sought-after person), the dispatcher (who sends the hero on the quest), and the false hero. While not all modern stories have every type, these roles help us analyse character functions.

Claude Lévi-Strauss introduced binary oppositions – pairs of opposite concepts (good vs evil, nature vs civilisation, young vs old) that drive conflict and meaning. In a superhero film, for example, the binary opposition between hero and villain creates the central tension.

6. Genre and Representation |

Genre is a category of media product defined by shared conventions. These conventions form a ‘contract’ between producer and audience – when you watch a horror film, you expect jump scares, low-key lighting and an unsettling soundtrack. Hybrid genres combine two or more genres (e.g. a rom-com blends romance and comedy).

Representation is the way media portrays individuals, groups, events and issues. All representations are constructed; somebody decided what to include or leave out. Stereotypes are simplified, often exaggerated portrayals that reduce people to a few traits (e.g. teenagers as moody, grandmothers as frail).

Challenging stereotypes means presenting more diverse, realistic images. Many contemporary adverts and films now show strong female leads, diverse families, and positive portrayals of disabilities to broaden audience understanding.

7. Audience and Demographics |

All media products are designed with a target audience in mind. Demographics categorise people by measurable characteristics such as age, gender, occupation and income. In the UK, the socio-economic grading system (A, B, C1, C2, D, E) is commonly used: A represents higher managerial roles, while E includes casual workers and pensioners.

Psychographics go deeper, looking at audience attitudes, values and interests – such as ‘adventurers’ or ‘defenders’. The Uses and Gratifications model suggests that audiences actively choose media to fulfil needs: information/knowledge, personal identity, social interaction (connecting with others), and entertainment/escapism.

8. Media Institutions and Regulation |

Media institutions are the organisations that create, produce and distribute content. The BBC is a public service broadcaster funded by the licence fee, with a remit to ‘inform, educate and entertain’. Commercial institutions like ITV or Netflix rely on advertising revenue or subscriptions to make a profit.

Regulation ensures that media content meets certain standards. In the United Kingdom, Ofcom is the communications regulator; it oversees television, radio, and video-on-demand services, sets rules on harmful content and advertising, and protects viewers, especially children, from inappropriate material.

9. Analysing Print Advertisements |

Print advertisements remain a classic form for analysis. They use a combination of image, headline, copy (body text), typography, logo and slogan. The visual hierarchy guides the reader’s eye – a large central image often grabs attention first.

A useful model is AIDA: Attention (attract the viewer), Interest (hold their attention with benefits or curiosity), Desire (make them want the product), Action (a call to buy, visit a website, or join). Always identify the product, brand identity, target audience, and any persuasive techniques such as celebrity endorsement or emotive language.

一个有用的模型是 AIDA:Attention(引起注意)、Interest(用利益或好奇心维持注意力)、Desire(激发拥有欲)、Action(号召购买、访问网站或加入)。

10. Film Promotion and Trailers |

Film promotion spans many platforms: teaser posters, theatrical trailers, TV spots, social media campaigns and merchandise tie-ins. A trailer is a short, highly edited promotional video. It builds excitement through rapid cutting, on-screen text, voice-over, and carefully chosen moments from the film.

Key devices in trailers include enigma codes (questions that make you curious – ‘What happens next?’), action codes (events that suggest further action), iconic shots (memorable images), and genre signifiers (visual and audio clues that tell you it is a comedy, horror, etc.). Effective trailers reveal just enough to hook the audience without giving away the whole plot.

11. Online Media and Social Platforms |

Online media are interactive and often participatory. Audiences can like, share, comment, and create their own content, becoming ‘prosumers’ (producer-consumers). Platforms like YouTube, TikTok and Instagram use algorithms to personalise feeds based on watch history and engagement.

However, the online world
