1. Semiotics – The Science of Signs |

Semiotics is the study of signs and how they create meaning. Every media text is built from signs that have two parts: the signifier (the physical form of the sign, such as a word, image or sound) and the signified (the mental concept it represents). Together they produce the sign.

At the most basic level we distinguish between denotation (the literal, obvious meaning) and connotation (the associated, cultural or emotional meaning). A red rose denotes a flower; it connotes love, passion or romance depending on the context.

A simple ‘formula’ to remember this is:

Denotation + Connotation = Meaning

The same denotation can carry different connotations in different cultures or media forms, so always ask what associations a sign triggers.

2. The Narrative Formula – Todorov’s Equilibrium |

Narrative refers to the way a story is structured. Tzvetan Todorov proposed a simple story formula that appears again and again in films, novels, adverts and news reports:

Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Repair → New Equilibrium

  • Equilibrium – a balanced, ‘normal’ starting state.
  • Disruption – something upsets the balance (a villain, a problem).
  • Recognition – characters realise the disruption has occurred.
  • Repair – they attempt to solve the problem.
  • New Equilibrium – the story ends with a new balance, often changed.

This five-stage formula helps you map almost any plot. When analysing a film trailer or a short film, ask yourself: what is the equilibrium, what disrupts it, and how is the new equilibrium different from the original?

3. Propp’s Character Types – The Casting Formula |

Vladimir Propp studied hundreds of folk tales and identified seven recurring character types. Think of them as a ‘casting formula’ for stories:

  • Hero – goes on the quest, often the protagonist.
  • Villain – opposes the hero.
  • Donor – gives the hero a magical object or advice.
  • Helper – supports the hero on the quest.
  • Princess – the reward or someone who needs rescuing.
  • Dispatcher – sends the hero on the quest.
  • False Hero – appears good but betrays the hero.

Not every story uses all seven, and one character can fill more than one role. Use this as a checklist when you study superhero films, fantasy stories or adventure games – it helps explain why certain characters feel so familiar.

4. The Camera Shot Size Formula |

Camera shot size directly affects how we connect with a character or subject. Remember the sequence from furthest to closest:

ELS (Extreme Long Shot) → LS (Long Shot) → MLS (Medium Long Shot) → MS (Medium Shot) → MCU (Medium Close-Up) → CU (Close-Up) → ECU (Extreme Close-Up)

Shot Type Effect
ELS Shows vast landscape; character tiny – emphasises setting, isolation
LS Full body in frame; shows action and environment
MLS Knees up; still plenty of background
MS Waist up; common for dialogue, shows gestures
MCU Chest up; starts to feel intimate
CU Face fills frame; reveals emotion
ECU Single detail (eye, fingerprint); creates intensity

When analysing a print advert or a film still, identify the shot size first. Then ask: why did the creator choose this distance? What does it make me feel or understand about the character?

5. Camera Angle – The Power Hierarchy |

Camera angle shapes audience perception of power and status. The three main angles can be expressed as a simple power equation:

High Angle → Subject looks weak / vulnerable
Eye Level → Equality between viewer and subject
Low Angle → Subject looks powerful / dominant

  • High angle: camera looks down on the subject, making it appear small, inferior or trapped.
  • Eye-level angle: neutral, treating the subject as an equal.
  • Low angle: camera looks up, making the subject seem larger, stronger or more threatening.

A ‘formula’ to use in your exam writing could be: Angle + Shot Size = Power Relationship. For example, a low angle extreme close-up of a villain’s face makes them seem overwhelmingly dominant and terrifying.

6. Mise-en-Scène – The Five Elements |

Mise-en-scène is a French term meaning ‘placed in the scene’. It refers to everything you can see in a frame. Use the memorable acronym CLAMPS to recall the five components:

  • C – Costume (what characters wear and what it tells us about them)
  • L – Lighting (how light and shadow create mood)
  • A – Actors (facial expressions, body language, positioning)
  • M – Make-up (used to transform or reveal character traits)
  • P – Props (objects that characters use or that appear in the scene)
  • S – Setting (where the scene takes place, the background)

Each element contributes to the overall meaning. If a character is introduced in a dimly lit room, wearing torn clothes and holding a flickering torch, the mise-en-scène immediately creates a sense of danger and poverty – before any dialogue begins.

7. Colour Theory – The Emotional Palette |

Colour works like an emotional formula in media texts. Filmmakers, graphic designers and game artists choose colour palettes deliberately to guide your feelings. Here are common colour connotations:

Colour Typical Connotation
Red Love, danger, anger, passion, warmth
Blue Calm, sadness, coldness, technology, trust
Yellow Happiness, energy, caution, warmth
Green Nature, envy, growth, sickness
Purple Royalty, mystery, spirituality, luxury
Black & White Elegance, death, good vs evil, simplicity

A quick reference ‘equation’ can be: Dominant Colour + Context = Emotional Effect. A character dressed entirely in black might connote villainy – but in a charity campaign, black might instead suggest elegance and sophistication.

8. Audience Theory – Uses and Gratifications |

Why do audiences choose certain media? The Uses and Gratifications model gives us a simple ‘audience needs formula’:

Media Choice = Need for Information + Personal Identity + Social Interaction + Entertainment

  • Information / Surveillance – we want to learn about the world (news, documentaries).
  • Personal Identity – media texts help us understand ourselves and our values (role models, lifestyle magazines).
  • Social Interaction – we use media to connect with others or fill a sense of companionship (social media, reaction videos).
  • Entertainment / Diversion – we seek escape, relaxation or emotional release (comedy, music, gaming).

When you analyse a media text’s target audience, use this checklist: which of these four needs is the text satisfying? A horror film might primarily offer entertainment, but it also creates social interaction when friends watch together and discuss it afterwards.

9. Representation – The Construction Formula |

Representation is never simply a mirror of reality; it is always a construction. When studying representation of groups – by gender, ethnicity, age, ability or social class – remember this key formula:

Representation = Selection + Construction + Mediation

  • Selection – creators choose what to include and what to leave out.
  • Construction – they use media language (camera, editing, sound, mise-en-scène) to build a version of reality.
  • Mediation – the final product is the version the audience receives, shaped by the producer’s viewpoint.

Always ask: who or what is being represented? Is the representation positive, negative, stereotypical or challenging stereotypes? A news photograph of a teenager might select a hoodie, a certain posture and a gloomy alley to construct a ‘threatening’ representation – or it might choose a library setting, smiling expression and bright lighting to construct a ‘hardworking student’ representation.

10. Genre – The Blueprint Formula |

Genre is a way of grouping media texts that share similar features. You can think of genre as a recipe or blueprint:

Genre = Iconography + Narrative Patterns + Character Types + Themes

  • Iconography – the visual, audio and symbolic cues we instantly recognise (e.g. a lightsaber = sci-fi, cowboy hat = western).
  • Narrative Patterns – typical story structures (e.g. a mystery must be solved, a romance must overcome obstacles).
  • Character Types – familiar roles (the detective, the sidekick, the love interest).
  • Themes – big ideas the genre explores (good vs evil, isolation, coming of age).

Genres are not fixed; they evolve and blend. A horror-comedy hybrid borrows iconography from both, creating new audience expectations. When analysing a film poster or trailer, identify the genre cues and then explain the expectations they set up – and whether they are fulfilled or subverted.

11. Editing – The Rhythm and Meaning Engine |

Editing is how shots are joined together to control time, pace and meaning. Think of editing as a grammar of film. One of the most powerful ‘formulas’ is the Kuleshov Effect: a shot of a neutral face followed by different images (a bowl of soup, a coffin, a playing child) makes the audience read different emotions into that same face. So we can state:

Shot A + Shot B = New Meaning (created in the viewer’s mind)

Key editing techniques to use in your analysis:

  • Cut – instant change between shots, keeps pace fast.
  • Fade to black – suggests time passing or a dramatic ending.
  • Cross-cutting – cutting between two different scene locations happening at the same time, building suspense.
  • Match on action – an action begun in one shot continues smoothly in the next, creating continuity.

Editing rhythm also affects emotion: rapid cuts often signal excitement, chaos or urgency; long takes can create tension, intimacy or a documentary feel.

12. Sound – The Invisible Storyteller |

Sound is just as carefully designed as visuals. There are two main categories, and together they form a soundscape that shapes meaning:

Diegetic Sound + Non-Diegetic Sound = Complete Audio World

  • Diegetic sound – everything that exists within the story world: characters speaking, footsteps, traffic, music playing from a car radio. The characters can hear it.
  • Non-diegetic sound – added for the audience only: background music score, voiceover narration, sound effects that are stylised (e.g. a ‘whoosh’ during a whip pan). The characters cannot hear it.

In an exam, use the formula: Sound Type + Source (on/off screen) + Effect on Audience. For example, ‘The non-diegetic, high-pitched string music creates anxiety as the character walks down the dark corridor, even though the character hears nothing.’
