Many famous works, from Leonardo da Vinci’s studies to modern photography, apply this proportional theorem.

If you know the real size S₁ of an object at a distance D₁, you can calculate its apparent size S₂ at a different distance D₂. Applying this simple law consistently to all objects in your scene will instantly strengthen your one-point and two-point perspective drawings.

Use these formulas to select your palette before you start painting, and you will avoid muddy, clashing colours.

The steeper the value change over a short distance, the rougher the surface will appear. This formula helps you turn simple outlines into tactile, realistic forms.

Mastering this equation allows you to create dynamic compositions that feel perfectly poised without being boringly symmetrical.

Use contrast as a tool, not an accident, guided by this principle to lead the viewer exactly where you want them to look.

Visual Rhythm = Repeated Unit + Varying Spacing or Size

A row of identical trees painted with exactly the same shape and spacing feels flat and mechanical. But if you repeat the tree form while gradually reducing its size or altering the gap between trees, you create a rhythmic progression that suggests depth and a gentle breathing quality. This rule applies to pattern design as well: a strong pattern uses a repeating motif, but a rhythmically rich pattern alters either the colour, orientation or scale of that motif across the surface.

Emphasis = Contrast × (Isolation + Golden Placement)

Make your focal point the area of highest contrast, isolate it by surrounding it with space or quieter shapes, and then place it at a golden section point or rule-of-thirds intersection. This triple action guarantees that the viewer’s eye will land there first. Every other element in the composition should be slightly less contrasty, less detailed, and less isolated in order to support the focal point without competing with it. This formula prevents the common mistake of having several equally loud spots that scatter attention.

Cohesive Artwork = Common Elements (colour, shape, texture) + Deliberate Variations

Unity is achieved when you repeat a limited palette, a family of shapes, or a consistent brushstroke style across the whole work. Too much unity, however, makes a piece dull. That is where variety comes in. By introducing small changes in size, direction or a single accent colour among the repeated elements, you maintain interest. Think of it as a recipe: strong unity provides the baseline flavour, and variety is the spice that makes the dish memorable. Apply this theorem constantly while you are developing your ideas and your artwork will feel both resolved and lively.
