In Year 8 WJEC Drama, students build on foundational skills to explore the art of theatre more deeply. This revision guide covers the essential knowledge required: from understanding the building blocks of drama to applying performance and design skills, and from devising original work to evaluating a live performance. Use this resource to consolidate your learning and prepare for assessments.

1. The Elements of Drama |

Drama is created through a combination of key elements. The most commonly used acronym in WJEC is ‘DRAMAFIX’ or a similar framework, but you must be able to discuss elements such as character, plot, tension, language, symbols, atmosphere, and audience relationship.

Character is who the performer portrays, developed through backstory, motivation and physical/vocal choices. Plot is the sequence of events, including exposition, rising action, climax and resolution. Tension drives the drama forward; it can be created through conflict, suspense, surprise or mystery.

Language refers to the words spoken or the style of dialogue, while symbols are objects, colours or gestures that represent a bigger idea. Atmosphere is the feeling or mood created for the audience, influenced by lighting, sound and pace. The audience relationship can be direct (breaking the fourth wall) or indirect.

2. Creating a Character |

To bring a character to life, you need to move beyond simply reading lines. Think about the character’s objectives (what they want), obstacles (what stands in their way) and tactics (how they try to overcome obstacles). Stanislavski’s ‘Magic If’ is a useful tool: ask yourself ‘What would I do if I were in this character’s situation?’

Use hot-seating to explore your character’s thoughts. In pairs, one person answers questions in role while the other interviews. You can also write a character diary or create a role-on-the-wall diagram with inner feelings on the inside and external facts on the outside.

Status is an important concept. High-status characters might use open body language and a confident tone, while low-status characters may avoid eye contact, speak hesitantly or make themselves physically smaller. Playing with status can add depth to a scene.

3. Vocal Skills |

Your voice is a powerful acting tool. Consider these key aspects: volume (loudness/softness), pitch (high/low), pace (speed of speech), pause (silence for dramatic effect), tone (the emotional quality, e.g., aggressive, soothing, sarcastic), emphasis (stressing certain words), and articulation (clarity of speech).

Experiment with accent and dialect if the script suggests a specific region, but always ensure you can be understood. Project your voice safely from your diaphragm so that the whole audience can hear you without shouting. A useful exercise is to read a line with different emotions to see how tone changes meaning.

In character creation, match vocal choices to the character’s age, personality and emotional state. A nervous character might speak in a higher pitch with faster pace and frequent pauses.

4. Physical Skills |

Physical skills refer to how you use your body to communicate character and meaning. Key areas include posture (how you hold your body), gait (the way you walk), gesture (movements of hands and arms to express ideas), facial expression, and body language (open vs closed).

Think about the character’s physicality: Is there a physical habit like a twitch or a limp? Does the character lead with their chest, head or hips? Use levels (high, medium, low) to show status or emotion. For example, a character in despair might collapse to the floor.

Proxemics, or the use of space between performers, tells a story. Close proximity can suggest intimacy or tension; distance can suggest isolation or fear. Practise mirroring exercises to develop ensemble awareness and spatial control.

5. Exploring Space and Levels |

Understanding stage spaces is essential. Familiarise yourself with stage directions: upstage (furthest from audience), downstage (closest), stage left, stage right, centre stage. These remain constant from the actor’s perspective when facing the audience.

Using levels means varying your height: standing, sitting, kneeling or lying down. A sudden change in level can highlight a dramatic moment. Blocking is the planned movement of performers on stage; effective blocking uses diagonal lines, triangles and asymmetrical groupings to create interesting stage pictures.

Always consider sightlines: can the audience see the key action? Avoid standing directly in front of another performer unless it is intentional to hide them or create tension.

6. Lighting and Sound Design |

Lighting creates atmosphere, directs focus and indicates time of day. Key terminology includes: flood (wide beam), spot (focused beam), wash (general coverage), blackout (complete darkness), fade (gradual change), cross-fade (one light fades as another comes up), gobo (a stencil that creates a pattern), gel (coloured filter). You can use warm colours (red, orange) for warmth, cold colours (blue) for sadness or tension.

Sound design includes live sound (actor-created) and recorded sound. Consider diegetic sound (the characters can hear it, e.g., a phone ringing) versus non-diegetic sound (only the audience hears, e.g., dramatic underscore). Sound effects, music and silence all contribute to the atmosphere and can foreshadow events.

When designing, ask: What mood do I want to create? How can light and sound support the story? For example, a sudden strobe lighting effect might signal chaos; a low, rumbling sound might build tension.

7. Costume, Props and Set |

Costume communicates character instantly. It can show period (historical era), status, occupation, personality and transformation. Consider colour symbolism (e.g., white for innocence, red for danger), fabric texture, and how the costume restricts or enables movement. A simple scarf used in different ways can suggest multiple roles.

Props are objects handled by performers. They can be symbolic or realistic. Every prop should have a purpose; avoid fidgeting with props unless it is a deliberate character choice. Key prop categories include personal props (a locket, a letter), set props (vase on a table) and costume props (a walking stick).

Set design establishes the world of the play. It can be minimalistic (using only a few blocks and drapes) or detailed. Consider levels, entrances/exits, and sightlines. For WJEC, you may be asked to sketch and label a set design, explaining how it suits the play’s style and themes
