1. Stage Geography and Directions |

Upstage is the area furthest from the audience, while downstage is the part nearest to the audience. These terms originate from raked stages that sloped upwards away from the viewers. Stage left and stage right are always given from the performer’s perspective facing the audience. Therefore, stage left is the actor’s left, which appears to the audience as the right side of the stage.

Centre stage is the strongest focal point, drawing the most attention. The wings are off-stage areas to the left and right, hidden by curtains or masking. The apron is the part of the stage that extends in front of the proscenium arch. Common stage configurations include proscenium arch (a framed stage like a picture frame), thrust (extending into the audience on three sides), in-the-round (audience on all sides), and traverse (audience on two opposing sides).

A quick memory aid: ‘DUMP’ – Downstage Upstage; ‘SALoon’ – Stage Left is Actor’s Left. When you face the audience, ‘right’ in the house is ‘left’ for the actor.

2. Vocal Skills |

Pitch refers to how high or low the voice sounds; higher pitch often signals excitement or nervousness, lower pitch can convey authority or sadness. Pace is the speed of speech — fast pace suggests urgency, slow pace indicates thoughtfulness. Pause is a deliberate break that builds tension or emphasises a key line. Volume is the loudness or softness of the voice, used to project emotion or reflect a character’s inner state.

Tone is the emotional quality of the voice, such as warm, sarcastic, or fearful. Articulation means speaking clearly, ensuring every consonant and vowel is distinct, so the audience understands every word. Projection is pushing the voice to reach the back of the auditorium without shouting — it relies on breath support and resonance. Intonation is the rise and fall pattern in speech that adds meaning, while accent reveals a character’s regional or social background.

3. Physical Skills |

Gesture is a purposeful movement of the hand or arm to communicate meaning. Posture is the way a performer holds their body, showing age, status, or mood. Facial expression conveys emotion through the eyes, eyebrows, and mouth, and must be sustained throughout a scene. Body language includes the positioning of limbs, shoulders, and torso to reveal a character’s thoughts and relationships.

Gait is the manner of walking — a shuffle may show old age, a confident stride suggests authority. Levels refer to the height at which a performer works, like standing, sitting, or crouching, to show status or power dynamics. Proxemics is the use of space between performers; intimate distance signals closeness, while wide distance can indicate conflict or isolation. Stance describes how a character stands, such as feet wide apart for dominance or crossed legs for insecurity.

4. Characterisation Techniques |

Motivation is the reason why a character behaves in a certain way. Objective is what the character wants to achieve in a scene or the whole play — often a clear goal drives action. Status refers to the character’s social or psychological standing in relation to others, and can shift during a performance. Given circumstances are the facts provided by the script: time, place, situation, and relationships.

Subtext is the unspoken meaning beneath the dialogue; what the character really thinks or feels but does not say aloud. Hot seating is a rehearsal technique where an actor, in role, answers questions from the group to explore the character’s background and motivations. Role on the wall is a visual tool: draw an outline of a figure and write internal feelings on the inside, external facts on the outside.

5. Dramatic Forms and Styles |

Naturalism aims to represent life exactly as it is, with realistic settings, everyday speech, and believable characters facing ordinary problems. Physical theatre emphasises storytelling through movement and the body rather than text, often using ensemble work, dance-like sequences, and mime. Mime is a silent performance style that conveys narrative, emotion, and character purely through physical expression, without speech or props.

Melodrama is an exaggerated style with clear heroes and villains, heightened emotions, and sensational plots, often underscored by music. Commedia dell’Arte is an Italian form using stock characters (like Harlequin and Pantalone), masks, and improvised comic routines. Epic theatre, associated with Brecht, uses techniques like narration, placards, and direct address to remind audiences they are watching a play, encouraging critical thinking rather than emotional immersion.

6. Script and Text Elements |

Dialogue is a conversation between two or more characters, moving the story forward and revealing relationships. A monologue is an extended speech by one character, delivered to others on stage. A soliloquy is a speech where a character speaks their thoughts aloud while alone on stage, sharing inner conflict directly with the audience.

Stage directions are instructions in the script written in italics or brackets, describing movement, emotions, or technical effects. An act is a major division within a play, often consisting of several scenes. A scene is a smaller unit, usually happening in one time and place. A cue is a signal — a line, sound, or action — that prompts a performer to speak or move. An aside is a brief remark directed to the audience, unheard by other characters on stage.

7. Technical Theatre Basics |

A flood light produces a wide, soft beam of light to wash the stage in colour. A spot, or profile spotlight, creates a focused beam to highlight a specific performer or area. A gobo is a metal stencil placed in front of a light to project patterns, such as leaves or window frames. Gels are coloured filters that change the hue of a light, often used to set mood. A blackout is an instant cut to complete darkness, marking a scene change or dramatic moment.

Diegetic sound comes from a source inside the world of the play, like a character’s radio or a slammed door. Non-diegetic sound comes from outside the story world, such as background music or narration that the characters cannot hear. Underscore is music played quietly under dialogue to heighten atmosphere. Flats are lightweight timber frames covered with canvas, painted to represent walls. A cyclorama is a curved white backdrop often lit with colour to create sky or abstract mood. Rostra are portable platforms used to create different levels on stage.

Costume is the clothing worn by actors to indicate period, social class, and personality. Props (properties) are any objects handled by performers, from a letter to a sword. Make-up enhances or alters an actor’s appearance, aiding characterisation through age, scars, or fantastical looks.

8. Rehearsal and Devising Methods |

Blocking is the precise movement and positioning of actors on stage, planned and recorded by the director. Improvisation is spontaneous, unscripted acting used to explore characters, develop scenes, or generate creative ideas. A freeze frame (or still image) is a frozen moment where performers hold a pose, like a photograph, to highlight a key emotion, relationship, or dramatic moment. Thought tracking is a technique where, during a freeze frame, a performer speaks their character’s inner thought aloud.

Marking the moment is stopping a workshop performance to insert a narration, slow motion, or repeated gesture that makes a significant instant stand out. Devising is a collaborative process where a group creates original performance material from a stimulus, rather than working from a pre-written script. A stimulus can be an image, poem, news article, piece of music, or theme that inspires a devised piece.

9. Performance Conventions |

The fourth wall is the imaginary barrier between the performers and the audience, maintaining the illusion that the audience is merely observing a private world. Breaking the fourth wall occurs when a character directly acknowledges the audience, destroying the illusion. An aside is a short comment spoken directly to the audience, unheard by other characters; direct address is a longer, more sustained conversation with the audience.

Narration is a spoken commentary that tells parts of the story, sometimes linking scenes or providing background. A tableau (plural tableaux) is a deliberate still image created by a group to represent an idea, theme, or moment; often used as a sequence. Slow motion is a movement technique where actions are deliberately slowed down to emphasise importance, intensify emotion, or reveal hidden details in a moment.

10. Responding to Performance |

Genre is the type or category of drama, such as comedy, tragedy, farce, or physical theatre. Style refers to the way a performance is produced, which might be naturalistic, abstract, or expressionistic. Atmosphere is the feeling or mood created in a scene or throughout a production, influenced by lighting, sound, and pacing. Tension is the sense of anticipation or conflict that keeps the audience engaged; it can be created through silence, suspense, or character opposition.

Climax is the point of highest tension or the turning point in the drama. Contrast is a deliberate difference — in pace, volume, movement, or mood — to highlight a change and sustain interest. Pace is the overall speed of the performance, and rhythm is the pattern of beats, pauses, and energy that shapes its flow. Mood is the emotional quality the audience experiences, such as joyous, ominous, or melancholic. Impact is the lasting effect a performance leaves on its audience. Intention is what the director or performer aims to communicate, linked to the themes and purpose of the piece.

When evaluating, use the W’s: Who were the characters? What happened and what techniques were used? Where and when did the action take place? Why did the performers make specific
