📚 Year 8 WJEC Maths: Exam Techniques and Marking Criteria | Year 8 WJEC

Success in Year 8 WJEC maths exams relies not only on knowing the content but also on understanding how marks are awarded and applying effective exam techniques.

1. Understanding the Mark Scheme |

WJEC exam papers are marked using a detailed mark scheme that awards method marks (M), accuracy marks (A), and sometimes independent marks (B).

Mark Type Description
M (Method) Awarded for showing a correct step or process, even if the final answer is wrong.
A (Accuracy) Awarded for obtaining the correct answer, usually dependent on method marks first.
B (Independent) Given for stating a correct fact or drawing a correct diagram, without needing to show working.

Many students lose marks because they skip steps and the examiner cannot see the method.

Always write down your working, even for simple calculations, to secure valuable method marks.

2. Showing Working for Method Marks |

Method marks are the safety net. If you make a small arithmetic slip but your approach is correct, you will still earn most of the marks.

For example, when solving 3x + 5 = 20, you should write: 3x = 20 – 5, so 3x = 15, then x = 5. Do not just write x = 5.

Published by TutorHao | Year 8 Mathematics Revision Series | aleveler.com
