1. What is Sociology? |

Sociology is the scientific study of society, social relationships, and institutions.

Sociologists challenge ‘common sense’ assumptions by using evidence and systematic methods.

The sociological imagination, a term coined by C. Wright Mills, connects personal troubles to public issues.

Macro-sociology examines large-scale structures such as the economy, while micro-sociology focuses on face-to-face interactions like conversations.

Here are three major sociological perspectives that provide different lenses for analysing society:

Perspective Core Idea Key Terms
Functionalism Society is a system of interdependent parts that work together to maintain stability and social order. Function, dysfunction, socialisation, consensus
Marxism Society is based on conflict between the bourgeoisie (owners) and the proletariat (workers) over resources. Class conflict, exploitation, ideology, false consciousness
Feminism Society is patriarchal and structured by gender inequalities; women’s experiences have been historically marginalised. Patriarchy, institutional sexism, intersectionality

2. Socialisation | 社会化

Socialisation is the lifelong process through which individuals learn the norms, values, and behaviours appropriate to their society.

Primary socialisation takes place in early childhood, mainly within the family, where children acquire language and basic cultural rules.

Secondary socialisation occurs later through schools, peer groups, media, religion, and workplaces, helping individuals adapt to wider society.

The nature vs. nurture debate explores whether human behaviour is determined by biology or social learning.

George Herbert Mead emphasised the development of the ‘self’ through social interaction, distinguishing ‘I’ (the spontaneous self) and ‘me’ (the socialised self).

3. Culture and Norms |

Culture refers to the shared way of life of a group, including language, beliefs, customs, clothes, food, and rituals.

Norms are unwritten rules of behaviour that define what is acceptable or unacceptable in a given context.

Values are deeply held beliefs about what is right, good, and desirable, and they underpin norms.

Subcultures are groups within society that share distinctive norms and values, often differing from the mainstream culture.

Cultural diversity exists within and between societies; globalisation and migration have increased cultural exchange and hybridisation.

4. Identity and the Self |

Identity is how we see ourselves and how others see us; it includes personal identity and social identity.

Social identity can be based on class, gender, ethnicity, nationality, age, and disability, among other aspects.

Role theory suggests that individuals perform different roles in society (e.g. student, daughter, employee) and learn role expectations through socialisation.

Labelling theory, associated with Howard Becker, argues that identity can be shaped by how others label us, potentially leading to self-fulfilling prophecies.

Gender identity is socially constructed; from an early age, children learn ‘appropriate’ masculine and feminine behaviours through socialisation.

5. Social Class and Inequality |

Social stratification refers to the hierarchical arrangement of individuals or groups based on wealth, power, and prestige.

Sociologists traditionally identify the upper class, middle class, working class, and sometimes the underclass.

Life chances are the opportunities people have to access resources such as education, healthcare, and housing; they are unequally distributed by class.

Max Weber added the dimensions of status and party (political power) to economic class to explain stratification, arguing that inequality is multidimensional.

Social mobility refers to the movement of individuals or groups up or down the social hierarchy; structural factors can limit mobility.

6. Gender and Ethnicity |

Gender refers to the social, cultural, and psychological attributes associated with biological sex; it is distinct from sex.

Gender inequality is evident in areas such as the gender pay gap, occupational segregation, the double burden of domestic work, and underrepresentation in politics.

Ethnicity refers to shared cultural heritage, language, religion, and history, while race is a social construct based on perceived physical differences.

Ethnic minorities often face discrimination and institutional racism in education, employment, housing, and criminal justice.

7. Family and Household |

A family is a group of people related by blood, marriage, or adoption who share residence and obligations.

Types of families include nuclear family, extended family, single-parent family, blended family, and same-sex family.

Functionalists, such as Talcott Parsons, see the nuclear family as performing essential functions: primary socialisation of children and stabilisation of adult personalities.

Feminists criticise the family as a site of patriarchal control and an unequal gendered division of domestic labour.

Family diversity has increased in recent decades due to changes in divorce laws, cohabitation, and attitudes towards marriage and sexuality.
