📚 Mastering Psychology Essay Writing: Frameworks and Model Answers |

Writing a psychology essay at Year 9 level is about more than just recalling facts — it requires a clear structure, critical thinking, and the ability to apply psychological knowledge to novel scenarios. In OCR Psychology, students are often asked to describe, explain, or evaluate theories and studies, and a well-organised framework helps turn good ideas into high-scoring answers. This article will walk you through the essential essay-writing frameworks and provide a model answer so you can see how to put the advice into practice.

1. Understanding the Essay Question |

Before you start writing, it is crucial to read the question carefully and identify exactly what is being asked. OCR Psychology questions often contain command words such as ‘describe’, ‘explain’, or ‘evaluate’, each requiring a different approach. Underline the key topic and the command word to ensure your response stays focused. For instance, a question that says ‘Describe and evaluate the multi-store model of memory’ expects you to outline the model’s components and then discuss its strengths and weaknesses.

2. Deconstructing Command Words |

Command words guide the structure of your essay. ‘Describe’ means you give a detailed account of a theory or study, focusing on what it involves. ‘Explain’ requires you to show how or why something happens, often linking cause and effect. ‘Evaluate’ is the highest-level skill, demanding that you weigh up evidence, identify strengths and limitations, and come to a reasoned judgement. Using a table can help you remember what each command word expects.

Describe | 描述 Give a detailed account | 详细叙述 Outline the theory, stages, or findings
Explain | 解释 Show how or why | 说明如何/为何 Link the theory to behaviour, use ‘because’
Evaluate | 评价 Judge strengths and weaknesses | 判断优缺点 State strength/limitation, evidence, and a conclusion

3. The PEEL Paragraph Framework | PEEL

PEEL (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) is a powerful tool for writing clear and analytical paragraphs. Start with a clear Point that states the main idea. Then provide Evidence, such as a study or a specific finding. Next, Explain what the evidence shows and why it is important. Finally, Link back to the question or to the next point. This structure prevents waffle and keeps your argument focused.

PEEL(观点、证据、解释、衔接)是写出清晰分析段落的有效工具。

Element | 要素 What to Do | 怎么做 Useful Phrases | 常用句式
Point | 观点 State your argument | 陈述论点 ‘One strength of the theory is…’
Evidence | 证据 Cite a study or example | 引用研究或例子 ‘For example, Peterson and Peterson (1959) found…’
Explanation | 解释 Discuss the meaning and implication | 讨论意义与启示 ‘This shows that… which suggests…’
Link | 衔接 Connect to the question or next idea | 回扣题目或引出下文 ‘Therefore, this supports the idea that…’

4. Structuring an Introduction |

An effective introduction does not need to be long — around three to four sentences can set the scene perfectly. Begin by defining any key terms from the question. Then briefly outline the theory or topic you will discuss. End the introduction by stating the direction of your essay, which might include both description and evaluation if the question demands it. Avoid lengthy background history; your teacher wants to see that you understand the question and have a plan.

5. Writing a Compelling Main Body |

The main body of your essay is where you deliver your description and evaluation. Usually, you will dedicate one or two paragraphs to describing the theory or study, followed by several evaluation paragraphs. Each paragraph should follow the PEEL structure. For description, include details such as the aim, method, results, and conclusion of a study. For evaluation, pick one strength or limitation per paragraph and support it with evidence from a study or contrasting theory.

6. Integrating Psychological Studies and Evidence |

Evidence is what distinguishes a psychology essay from a simple opinion piece. Whenever you make a claim, back it up with a named study or research finding. Give a brief outline of the study — the researcher names and year, the method, and what was found. For example: ‘Loftus and Palmer (1974) showed that leading questions can distort memory, as participants who heard the word “smashed” estimated higher speeds.’ Make sure the evidence directly supports the point you are making.

7. Evaluating Theories Critically |

Evaluation means looking at both sides of an argument. A good evaluation paragraph identifies a strength or limitation, provides an example or counter-study, explains why it matters, and then links to the question. Common evaluation points include: supporting evidence, contradictory evidence, practical applications, methodological issues, and alternative explanations. Avoid simply listing points without explanation; depth is better than breadth.

8. Crafting a Balanced Conclusion |

Your conclusion should summarise the key points discussed and reach a balanced judgement. Start by briefly recapping the theory and the main strengths and limitations you have covered. Then state your overall view — for example, whether the theory is a credible explanation or if it has significant flaws. Keep it concise and do not introduce new information. A strong closing sentence can refer back to the question and underscore the importance of the topic.

9. Common Pitfalls to Avoid |

Many students lose marks by ignoring the command word, writing everything they know rather than answering the question. Others describe without evaluating or evaluate without evidence, which turns the essay into a personal opinion piece. Poor time management leads to rushed conclusions, and weak paragraphing makes the argument hard to follow. Always plan before you write, check your work against the command word, and leave a few minutes for proofreading.

10. Sample Model Answer: A Study on Memory |

Below is a model answer to the question: ‘Describe and evaluate the multi-store model of memory.’ Notice how it follows the frameworks discussed above.

The multi-store model (MSM), proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968), explains memory as a flow of information through three separate stores. Stimuli from the environment first enter the sensory register, where information is held very briefly. If attention is paid to it, the information passes to short-term memory (STM), which has a limited capacity of about 7±2 items and a duration of around 18-30 seconds. Through rehearsal, information can then be transferred to long-term memory (LTM), which is believed to have unlimited capacity and can last a lifetime. The model emphasises that rehearsal is crucial for moving information into LTM.

One strength of the MSM is that it is supported by empirical research. For example, Glanzer and Cunitz (1966) found that when participants were asked to recall a list of words, they remembered the first few words (primacy effect) and the last few words (recency effect). The primacy effect occurs because the early words had been rehearsed into LTM, while the recency effect reflects words still in STM. This supports the idea of separate STM and LTM stores. However, a limitation is that the model is oversimplified. It portrays STM as a single, passive store, yet Baddeley and Hitch’s (1974) working memory model shows that STM has multiple components, such as the phonological loop and visuospatial sketchpad, which handle different types of information. This suggests the MSM does not fully reflect the complexity of short-term memory. Furthermore, the model focuses heavily on rehearsal, but in daily life we often remember information without deliberate rehearsal, which the MSM cannot easily explain. On balance, while the multi-store model provides a useful starting point for understanding memory, its simplicity means it overlooks important details about how memory works dynamically.
