1. The Semiotic Formula: Sign = Signifier + Signified |
In media studies, a sign is the smallest unit of meaning. According to semiotics, every sign is composed of two parts: the signifier, which is the physical form you can see, hear or touch (such as a word, an image or a sound); and the signified, which is the mental concept evoked by the signifier.
Sign = Signifier + Signified
The relationship between signifier and signified is often arbitrary and depends on cultural conventions. For example, a red rose might be a sign where the signifier is the image of the flower and the signified is romance or love.
When you analyse a media text, ask: what are the signs, and how do the signifiers create the intended meaning?
