1. What is Media Studies? |

Media Studies is about understanding how different forms of media – such as film, television, advertising, social media, and newspapers – communicate messages. It is not just about consuming media but analysing how they are made, who makes them, and why. You will learn to look behind the scenes and ask questions like ‘What is the purpose of this image?’ and ‘How does this scene make me feel?’.

This subject combines theory and practical work. You will analyse existing media products and create your own, developing critical thinking and creative skills.

2. Key Concepts: Media Language |

Media language refers to the codes and conventions used to create meaning. Just as spoken language has grammar, media texts use visual and auditory codes. Denotation is the literal meaning of a sign (what you see). Connotation is the associated or deeper meaning (what it suggests). For example, a red rose denotation is a flower; it connotes love or romance.

Understanding media language helps you to deconstruct any media text. You will examine elements like colour, lighting, costume, and framing.

3. Analysing Images: Mise-en-Scène |

Mise-en-scène is a French term meaning ‘placed in the scene’. It includes everything you see within a single shot: setting, props, costume, hair and makeup, figure expression and movement, and lighting. By analysing these elements, you can uncover the intended mood and message. For instance, low-key lighting often creates a mysterious or tense atmosphere.

Next time you watch a film, pause on a frame and ask: What can I see in the background? Why are the characters dressed this way? How does the lighting affect the mood?

4. Understanding Camera Shots and Angles |

Camera work is a fundamental part of media language. Different shot sizes and angles can guide the audience’s attention and shape their emotions. Common shot types include: Extreme Long Shot (ELS), Long Shot (LS), Medium Shot (MS), Close-Up (CU), and Extreme Close-Up (ECU). A close-up of a face can show detailed emotion, while a long shot can establish location.

Camera angles also matter. A low angle makes a subject look powerful or threatening; a high angle can make them seem small or vulnerable. Eye-level angles create a sense of equality and realism.

Close-Up (CU) 特写 Shows emotion / 展现情感
Medium Shot (MS) 中景 Shows body language / 展示肢体语言
Long Shot (LS) 全景 Establishes setting / 交代场景

5. Sound and Editing in Media |

Sound and editing are powerful tools that shape how we experience a media text. Diegetic sound is any sound that exists within the story world, like dialogue, footsteps, or a car engine. Non-diegetic sound is added later, such as background music or a voiceover narrator. Editing controls the pace and narrative flow. Quick cuts can create excitement, while long takes can build tension or realism.

Consider the role of a soundtrack. A happy, fast tune can make a scene feel joyful, while slow, minor-key music can signal sadness or danger.

6. Representation in Media |

Representation is how media portrays people, places, events, and ideas. It is never a simple ‘mirror’ of reality; it is constructed. Media makers select and combine elements to create specific representations. For example, a news report might represent a group in a positive or negative light through word choice and image selection. Stereotypes are simplified and often exaggerated representations of a group, which can lead to prejudice.

Being media literate means questioning representations: Who created this? Who is included, and who is left out? What message does it send?

7. Audience and Purpose |

Every media text is created with an audience and a purpose in mind. The audience could be a broad mass audience or a niche group with specific interests. Purpose refers to why the text was made – to inform, entertain, persuade, or sell a product. Knowing the target audience helps producers decide on language, style, and platform. A teen magazine will look and read very differently from a financial newspaper.

You will learn to identify who a text is aimed at by examining its content, language, and visual style.

8. Introduction to Media Industries |

Media products do not appear out of thin air; they are produced by industries that follow certain practices and economic rules. Key industries include film, television, publishing, advertising, and digital media. You will explore concepts like production, distribution, and regulation. For instance, a film is produced by a studio, distributed to cinemas or streaming platforms, and may be rated by a classification board.

Understanding the business side of media helps you see how commercial interests can influence content and representation.

9. Genre and Narrative Basics |

Genre is a way of categorising media texts based on shared conventions. Horror films, for example, often use dark settings, sudden shocks, and eerie music. Narrative is the structure of the story. Todorov’s theory suggests many narratives follow a pattern: equilibrium, disruption, recognition, attempt to repair, and new equilibrium. Understanding genre and narrative helps you predict what might happen and appreciate how stories are told.

You can apply simple narrative analysis to anything – from a TV advert to a fairy tale.

10. Practical Task: Creating a Media Product |

To put theory into practice, try designing a simple print advert for a new snack bar aimed at teenagers. Think about your target audience and purpose (to persuade). Choose appropriate images, colours, a catchy slogan, and consider representation. Draw a rough sketch or use a digital tool. Write a short paragraph explaining your creative choices, using media language terms such as ‘connotation’, ‘shot type’, and ‘audience’.

This hands-on activity will help you see how all the elements we have discussed work together to create meaning.

11. Revision Tips for Year 8 | Year 8 复习技巧

Throughout the year, keep a media diary. Note down interesting adverts, film scenes, or social media posts you encounter. Practise analysing them using the key concepts. Create flashcards for camera shots, sounds, and terminology. Watch a short film with the sound off and describe what you think is happening; then watch with sound and see how it changes.

Form a study group and discuss different interpretations of the same text – there is often no single ‘right’ answer in Media Studies.

12. Bridging to Year 9 | 衔接 Year 9

As you move into Year 9, you will delve deeper into institutional contexts and more complex theories. You will study a range of set media products and perhaps start working with moving image and audio production. To prepare, stay curious and critically engaged with the media around you. Read film reviews, explore how news is reported, and pay attention to advertising strategies.
