6. Chords and Harmony – The Vertical Sound |
Harmony adds richness and emotion. A chord is two or more notes sounding together. The most common chords are triads (root, third, fifth). Roman numerals describe chords based on their position in a scale.
- Primary Triads: I (tonic), IV (subdominant) and V (dominant) are the most important chords in any key.

- Polyphonic / Contrapuntal: Two or more independent melody lines woven together. |
- Unison / Octaves: All parts play the same pitch (unison) or the same melody separated by an octave. |
- Melody and Accompaniment: A texture where a clear tune is supported by broken chords, block chords or a bass line. |
8. Structure and Form – The Blueprint of Music |
Structure organises musical ideas into sections, giving a piece shape and direction. Recognising structure helps you follow a piece and write about it coherently in exams.
- Binary Form (AB): Two contrasting sections, often repeated. Common in Baroque dances.

- Rondo Form (ABACA): A recurring main theme (A) alternates with contrasting episodes.
- Theme and Variations: A theme is presented and then altered in successive variations (changes in rhythm, harmony, texture, etc.). |
- Verse-Chorus Form: The standard pop structure; verses tell the story, the chorus repeats the main hook. There may be a bridge, intro and outro. |
9. Rhythm and Metre – The Pulse of Music |
Rhythm gives music its groove and energy. Time signatures tell you how beats are grouped. Year 9 students should feel confident clapping, counting and composing in a range of metres.
