1. Introduction to GCSE Music Structure | GCSE

The AQA GCSE Music qualification is made up of three components: Understanding Music (40%), Performing Music (30%) and Composing Music (30%). Understanding Music is assessed through a written exam featuring listening questions and an essay on a set work. Performing requires you to submit a solo and an ensemble performance, while Composing asks for two original compositions — one free and one set to a brief.

AQA GCSE

During the summer, you do not need to tackle full exam papers. Instead, familiarise yourself with the language of the specification: terms like ‘sonority’, ‘texture’ and ‘tonality’ will appear regularly. Keep a music dictionary or a simple glossary on your phone so that you can look up unfamiliar vocabulary whenever you listen to a new piece.

2. The Elements of Music: Building Blocks |

All GCSE listening questions revolve around the elements of music. AQA identifies eight key areas: melody, harmony, tonality, structure, sonority, texture, tempo/metre/rhythm, and dynamics/articulation. Start by learning what each element means and practise describing music with them every day.

The table below summarises these elements with simple explanations you can use when listening to any piece over the summer.

Element What it means
Melody The main tune; can be stepwise, leaping or conjunct
Harmony Chords that accompany the melody; can be consonant or dissonant
Tonality The key centre; major, minor, modal or atonal
Structure The overall plan, e.g. binary, ternary, rondo
Sonority The characteristic sound of instruments, voices or technology
Texture How layers of sound interact; homophonic, polyphonic, etc.
Tempo, metre & rhythm Speed, beat grouping and note patterns; syncopation, swing, etc.
Dynamics & articulation Volume and how notes are played; staccato, legato, accents

Pick a favourite song each day and write two sentences about it using at least three of these elements. For example: ‘The melody is mostly conjunct with a small range, the tonality is major, and the texture is homophonic.’ This daily habit will embed the vocabulary deeply.

3. Western Classical Tradition 1650–1910 |

This Area of Study takes you from the Baroque era through to the late Romantic period. You will encounter composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Tchaikovsky. Focus on recognising typical features of each period: Baroque music often features terraced dynamics and a polyphonic texture, Classical music favours balanced phrases and clear cadences, while Romantic music stretches forms and uses chromatic harmony to express emotion.

Over the summer, create a playlist of highlights: Vivaldi’s ‘Spring’ (Baroque), Haydn’s ‘Symphony No. 94’ (Classical), Beethoven’s ‘Symphony No. 5’ (early Romantic) and Tchaikovsky’s ‘Romeo and Juliet Overture’ (late Romantic). As you listen, sketch a simple timeline marking when each piece was written and note the instrumentation. This will build a mental map of the era before you study it formally.

4. Popular Music |

AQA’s Popular Music Area of Study spans Broadway musicals, rock, pop, film music and musical theatre from the 1950s onwards. You need to understand how bands use technology, how riffs and hooks are built, and how studio production shapes the final sound. Key terms include ‘riff’, ‘loop’, ‘power chord’, ‘reverb’ and ‘multi-tracking’.

Try an active listening exercise: choose a well-known pop song like Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ or Billie Eilish’s ‘bad guy’. Map its structure (intro, verse, chorus, bridge, outro), count the layers of vocals and instruments, and describe how the dynamics change between sections. Write a paragraph in your own words analysing how the arrangement supports the mood.

If you play an instrument, learn to play a pop bass line or a chord sequence by ear during the summer. Transcribing even four bars from a recording will sharpen your aural skills and prepare you for the listening exam.

5. Traditional Music |

This Area of Study includes folk music, the music of Africa, the Caribbean, India and Latin America, as well as fusions that blend traditional styles with contemporary genres. You will be expected to recognise instruments such as the sitar, djembe, steel pan and charango, and to describe key rhythmic features like syncopation, polyrhythm and clave patterns.

Start by watching short performances of Indian raga or West African drumming online. Make notes under two headings: ‘Instruments and sonorities’ and ‘Rhythmic devices’. For instance, a typical raga performance might feature a sitar and tabla, with a slow alap section followed by a faster, metred gat. Describe how the rhythm changes and what effect it creates.

For a creative challenge, compose a short rhythmic pattern using a 3+3+2 grouping typical of many Latin American styles. Clap it or program it into a free app; then overlay a simple melody. This hands-on exploration will embed traditional structures much more effectively than passive listening alone.

This Area of Study covers a wide range of 20th- and 21st-century art music, from impressionism and expressionism to minimalism, serialism and electronic music. Composers such as Debussy, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Reich and John Adams feature here. You need to become comfortable with terms like ‘whole-tone scale’, ‘atonality’, ‘ostinato’, ‘phasing’ and ‘synthesiser’.

An excellent summer project is to compare a piece from the early 20th century with a minimalist work. Listen to Stravinsky’s ‘The Rite of Spring’ (focus on the ‘Augurs of Spring’ section) and then to Steve Reich’s ‘Music for 18 Musicians’. Note how both composers create energy through rhythm and repetition, but with completely different harmonic languages. Try to articulate why the Stravinsky still feels rooted in tradition while Reich pushes repetition to the extreme.

If you have access to a DAW (digital audio workstation) or even a simple keyboard, try creating a minimalist piece yourself using only five notes and a gradual process of addition or phase shifting. The experience will give you genuine insight into how composers of this era thought.

7. Listening and Analytical Skills |

GCSE listening questions often ask you to identify features, compare two excerpts or comment on how music reflects a mood or story. Develop a routine for unfamiliar listening. On first hearing, focus on the big picture: tempo, dynamics, structure and the general mood. On second hearing, zoom in on elements: what instruments can you pick out? Is the melody syllabic or melismatic? What is the tonality? Use a grid with the eight elements to organise your thoughts.

In addition to music from the Areas of Study, broaden your listening to include film scores, video game soundtracks and musical theatre. Try to answer the question: ‘How does the music support the narrative or gameplay?’ Being able to link sound to story will strengthen the descriptive paragraph you write in Section B of the exam.

8. Notation and Music Theory Basics |

While you do not need to be able to read full orchestral scores, a solid grasp of treble and bass clef notation, note values, key signatures up to four sharps/flats, and simple time signatures (2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8) is expected. You should also be able to recognise intervals by sight and sound, and understand chord symbols like C, G7, Am.

Spend five minutes each day on a short theory drill. Use free apps to practise identifying key signatures or building major and minor scales. Learn the pattern of tones and semitones: for a major scale it is T T S T T T S (tone, tone, semitone, tone, tone, tone, semitone). For a natural minor scale: T S T T S T T.

Write out a few bars of a simple melody in notation, then play it. This will improve your reading fluency and give you confidence when encountering notation in a listening exam or when presenting composition ideas.

9. Performance Preparation: Selecting and Practising Pieces |

Your solo and ensemble performances can be on any instrument or voice, and the pieces can be drawn from any style as long as they are of Grade 3 standard or above by Year 11. Use the summer to explore potential repertoire. Choose pieces that contrast in tempo, mood and era, as this allows you to demonstrate a wider range of skills.

Set up a structured practice diary. For each session, write down a specific goal, such as ‘play bars 1–8 with correct dynamics and articulation at half speed’. Record yourself often; listening back without your instrument in hand will reveal issues you cannot hear while playing. Make sure to include some ensemble play with friends or backing tracks to simulate the exam’s ensemble requirement.

10. Composition Foundations: Creativity and Structure |

In the composing component, you will need to produce two pieces lasting at least three minutes combined. Start by learning to build a 16-bar melody over a chord sequence. Use a simple chord progression such as I–V–vi–IV in a major key (e.g. C–G–Am–F). Compose a melody that uses a mix of steps and leaps, and experiment with rhythmic motifs.

Learn a basic structure that you can rely on: introduction, A section, B section, and a final A’ with a developed ending. This template can be applied to most popular and classical forms. As you compose, keep a log of your decisions — what instrument carries the melody, when does the texture thicken, what key changes occur. This log will be invaluable when you write your composition appraisal.

Use a free notation program or DAW to hear your ideas instantly. Even simple experiments with layers and panning will deepen your understanding of sonority and texture — both of which are AO4 assessment criteria.

11. Summer Practice Plan |

Consistency is more important than intensity over the summer. Aim for five 40-minute sessions per week, each mixing a variety of activities: 10 minutes of theory or ear training, 15 minutes of focused listening with notes, and 15 minutes on your instrument or voice working towards performance repertoire. Rotate the Areas of Study so that each week you touch on a different musical tradition.

At the end of every week, write a short reflection: ‘What new term did I learn? What listening surprised me? What aspect of my playing improved?’ This metacognitive habit will keep you motivated and help you see progress even when practising alone.

Remember that the GCSE Music course values broad musical curiosity as much as technical skill. Spend some time listening to genres you would not normally choose — perhaps a Renaissance choral piece, a folk tune from Mali or a contemporary string quartet. Each new sound world expands your ability to describe, analyse and create.
