1. What is Psychology? |

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. Unlike everyday speculation, psychology relies on empirical evidence gathered through systematic observation, measurement, and experimentation. It investigates both observable actions (like talking or walking) and internal mental processes (like thinking, remembering, and feeling). The field has many branches, including cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, and biological psychology, each focusing on different aspects of human experience.

Psychologists apply the scientific method: they formulate a research question, propose a hypothesis, collect and analyse data, and draw conclusions. The key goals are to describe, explain, predict, and sometimes modify behaviour. For example, a psychologist might design an experiment to test whether listening to music improves concentration, then use the results to recommend study strategies.

2. Research Methods and Key Concepts |

Psychological research often uses experiments to establish cause-and-effect relationships. In an experiment, the researcher manipulates the independent variable (IV) to see its effect on the dependent variable (DV).
