📚 Year 9 CIE Media: Core Concepts Review | Year 9 CIE

Media Studies is a fascinating subject that explores how media texts communicate meaning, influence audiences and reflect society. In Year 9, students are introduced to the core concepts that underpin the analysis and creation of media products. This revision guide covers key areas such as media language, narrative, genre, representation, audience and industry, providing a solid foundation for further study. By mastering these concepts, you will develop critical thinking skills and the ability to deconstruct any media text, from film posters to TV programmes.

1. Introduction to Media Studies |

The key concepts in Media Studies form the backbone of analysis: media language (the codes and conventions used to create meaning), representation (how media portrays people, places and ideas), audience (who the media text is aimed at and how they respond), and institution/industry (the organisations that produce and distribute media). These four areas help us ask critical questions about any media text. For example, when analysing a magazine cover, we might look at the colours and typography (media language), the way the cover model is portrayed (representation), who the intended readers are (audience), and who published the magazine (industry).

2. Denotation and Connotation |

Denotation refers to the literal, dictionary meaning of a sign – what we directly see or hear. Connotation is the associated, implied meaning that a sign carries, shaped by cultural and personal experiences. In media texts, creators use connotation to evoke emotions or ideas without stating them explicitly. For instance, a red rose in a film poster denotes a flower, but connotes love, passion or danger, depending on context. When analysing media, always note both what is shown (denotation) and what it suggests (connotation).

A useful approach is to ask, “What do I see?” (denotation) followed by “What does it mean?” (connotation). This simple pair of questions unlocks deeper layers of media texts.

3. Media Language: Camera Shots and Angles |

Camera shots and angles are fundamental tools in moving image media. They frame subjects in specific ways to create meaning and guide audience perception. A close-up highlights facial expression and emotion, while a long shot establishes setting and context. Camera angles convey power dynamics: a low angle shot makes the subject appear powerful or threatening, whereas a high angle suggests vulnerability.

Shot / Angle Meaning / 含义
Establishing Shot (定场镜头) Shows the location and context.
Long Shot (远景) Full body visible, emphasises setting.
Medium Shot (中景) Waist up, balances character and surrounding.
Close-up (特写) Focus on face or object, reveals emotion.
Low Angle (低角度) Subject looks powerful or dominant.
High Angle (高角度) Subject looks small or weak.
Over-the-shoulder (过肩镜头) Shows perspective in conversation.

4. Mise-en-Scène |

Mise-en-scène is a French term meaning ‘what is placed in the scene’. It encompasses everything visible within the frame: setting, props, costume, hair and makeup, lighting, colour, and the positioning and movement of actors. Each of these elements is deliberately chosen to communicate character, mood, genre and narrative information. For example, a dark, cluttered room with flickering lights suggests a horror scene, while a bright, minimalist space with white furniture connotes modernity and calm.

Lighting in mise-en-scène is particularly powerful. High-key lighting creates a bright, even look with minimal shadows, often used in comedies and sitcoms. Low-key lighting produces strong contrasts and deep shadows
