1. Semiotics: The Science of Signs | 符号学:关于符号的科学

Sign = Signifier + Signified

Signifier (the physical form): The word, image, sound or object that carries meaning. For example, a red rose.

能指(物理形式):承载意义的词语、图像、声音或物体。例如,一朵红玫瑰。

Signified (the mental concept): The idea or meaning the signifier evokes. The red rose signifies romance or love.

所指(心理概念):能指引发的想法或含义。红玫瑰象征浪漫或爱情。

Denotation: The literal, obvious meaning of a sign. A photo of a family smiling denotes people laughing together.

外延意义:符号最直接、最明显的意义。一张家庭合影的外延意义是几个人在一起欢笑。

Connotation: The associated, cultural meanings a sign carries. That same family photo may connote warmth, security and happiness.

内涵意义:符号所携带的与文化相关的联想意义。同样的家庭照可能内涵温馨、安全与幸福。

Myth (Barthes): When connotations become widely accepted as ‘natural’ truths. e.g., the myth that a nuclear family is the ideal unit.

神话(巴特):当内涵意义被广泛接受为“自然”真理时,就形成了神话。例如,核心家庭是最理想单位的神话。

2. Narrative Structure: Todorov’s Equilibrium Model | 叙事结构:托多罗夫的平衡模型

Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Repair Attempt → New Equilibrium

Equilibrium: The story begins with a state of balance, normality or peaceful order. Everything is as it should be.

平衡:故事开始时一切处于平衡、正常或平静有序的状态。万事万物各得其所。

Disruption: An event or character shatters this equilibrium, creating conflict or a problem that must be solved.

打破平衡:某个事件或人物打破了这种平衡,制造出必须解决的冲突或问题。

Recognition: The characters realise that the equilibrium has been disrupted and that action is needed.

认识阶段:角色意识到平衡已被打破,并且需要采取行动。

Repair Attempt: Heroes set out to resolve the disruption through a quest, battle or investigation.

修复尝试:英雄们通过冒险、战斗或调查,着手解决失衡。

New Equilibrium: The story ends with a restored order, often different from the original – a ‘new normal’.

新平衡:故事以恢复的秩序告终,通常与前一个平衡有所不同——形成一种“新常态”。

3. Character Archetypes: Propp’s Functions | 角色原型:普罗普的功能说

Character Functions = Hero + Villain + Donor + Helper + Princess + Dispatcher + False Hero

Hero: The protagonist who seeks something valuable and usually triumphs. Often undergoes a transformation.

英雄:寻求珍贵之物并最终获胜的主角,常常经历某种转变。

Villain: The antagonist who creates the disruption and opposes the hero.

反派:制造混乱并与英雄作对的反面角色。

Donor: Provides the hero with a magical object, special knowledge or crucial advice.

赠与者:为英雄提供魔法物品、特殊知识或关键建议的角色。

Helper: Accompanies and assists the hero on the journey, offering support and comic relief.

帮手:陪伴并协助英雄踏上旅程,提供支撑或调剂气氛。

Princess: The reward or sought-after person, often the victim who needs rescuing (and may be male).

公主:作为奖赏或被寻找的人物,往往是需要解救的受害者(也可能为男性角色)。

Dispatcher: Sends the hero on the quest and sets the story in motion.

派遣者:派遣英雄执行任务,推动整个故事的发展。

False Hero: Appears good but later reveals treacherous intentions, trying to claim credit or steal the reward.

假英雄:起初看似善良,后来暴露背叛意图,试图邀功或窃取奖赏。

4. Binary Oppositions: Levi-Strauss | 二元对立:列维-斯特劳斯

Meaning = Conflict between Opposites (A vs B)

Concept: Narrative tension and meaning are constructed through pairs of opposing concepts. A text constantly sets ‘good’ against ‘evil’, ‘young’ against ‘old’, ‘urban’ against ‘rural’.

概念:叙事张力与意义通过成对的对立概念建构而成。文本不断将“善”与“恶”、“年轻”与“年老”、“城市”与“乡村”对立起来。

Common pairs in media: East vs West, human vs alien, civilization vs wilderness, masculine vs feminine, order vs chaos.

媒体中常见对立:东方与西方、人类与异形、文明与荒野、阳刚与阴柔、秩序与混乱。

Why it matters: The side that ‘wins’ in the narrative often reflects dominant cultural values. Analysing oppositions reveals the text’s ideology.

重要性:叙事中“获胜”的一方往往反映了主流文化价值观。分析对立关系可以揭示文本的意识形态。

5. Audience Uses and Gratifications | 受众使用与满足理论

Audience Activity = Information + Personal Identity + Social Interaction + Entertainment

Information (surveillance): Audiences use media to learn about the world, satisfy curiosity or gain a sense of security through knowledge. Example: watching the news or a documentary.

信息(监视):受众利用媒体了解世界、满足好奇心或通过知识获得安全感。例如:观看新闻或纪录片。

Personal Identity: Media products help individuals reinforce their own values, find models of behaviour and explore their identity. Example: identifying with a character’s journey.

个人身份认同:媒介产品帮助个体强化自身价值观、寻找行为榜样并探索自我认同。例如:与一个角色的历程产生共鸣。

Social Interaction (integration): Media can provide topics for conversation, create a sense of belonging to a fandom, or substitute for real companionship (parasocial relationships).

社会互动(整合):媒体可以提供谈资、创造粉丝归属感,或替代真实陪伴(准社会关系)。

Entertainment (diversion): Escaping from problems, relaxing, enjoying cultural or aesthetic pleasure, and simply passing time.

娱乐(消遣):从问题中抽身、放松、享受文化或审美愉悦,或单纯打发时间。

6. Encoding/Decoding: Stuart Hall | 编码/解码:斯图亚特·霍尔

Meaning = Encoding (Producer) → Text → Decoding (Audience) with 3 Reading Positions

Encoding: Producers of media encode messages into texts through technical, symbolic and narrative codes. These messages are shaped by the producer’s background and institutional context.

编码:媒介生产者通过技术、象征和叙事符码将信息编入文本。这些信息受制作者的背景和机构语境影响。

Dominant (Preferred) Reading: The audience accepts the message exactly as the producer intended. They fully share the text’s ideology.

主导(偏好)解读:受众完全按生产者意图接受信息,完全认同文本的意识形态。

Negotiated Reading: The audience broadly accepts the preferred meaning but modifies it to fit their own experiences or beliefs.

协商解读:受众整体上接受偏好意义,但根据自身经验或信念进行调整。

Oppositional Reading: The audience understands the preferred message but rejects it, often because of conflicting social or cultural values.

对抗解读:受众理解偏好信息,但因社会或文化价值观冲突而拒绝接受。

7. The Male Gaze: Laura Mulvey | 男性凝视:劳拉·穆尔维

Visual Pleasure = Active Male Gaze / Passive Female Image

Core argument: In classical Hollywood cinema, the camera takes on a male perspective, objectifying women as erotic spectacles for the pleasure of a presumed male viewer.

核心论点:在经典好莱坞电影中,摄影机采用男性视角,将女性客体化为情色景观,以满足预设的男性观众的愉悦。

Active / Passive: Men are portrayed as active agents who drive the story forward; women are passive, their appearance coded for strong visual impact.

主动/被动:男性被描绘为推动故事发展的积极行动者;女性则是被动的,其外表被编码以产生强烈的视觉冲击。

Spectacle: Female characters are often framed in ways that fragment their bodies (close-ups on legs, lips) and interrupt the narrative flow to be ‘looked at’.

奇观:女性角色常被以割裂身体的方式构图(特写腿部、嘴唇),打断叙事流程以供“注视”。

Critique and extension: Contemporary media may offer the ‘female gaze’ or problematise the gaze, but Mulvey’s formula remains a key tool for analysing visual representation.

批评与延伸:当代媒体可能提供“女性凝视”或对凝视提出质疑,但穆尔维的公式仍是分析视觉表征的重要工具。

8. Media Language: Camera and Mise-en-Scene | 媒体语言:镜头与场面调度

Meaning = Shot Type + Angle + Lighting + Setting + Costume (Mise-en-Scene)

Extreme Close-Up (ECU): Shows a fraction of the subject, such as an eye, to create intensity, mystery or emotion.

大特写:展示被摄主体的一小部分,如一只眼睛,用以营造紧张、神秘或强烈情感。

Close-Up (CU): Frames the face or a significant detail, revealing character emotion or drawing attention to an object.

特写:取景脸部或重要细节,揭示角色情感或引导关注某个物件。

Medium Shot (MS): Waist-up framing, common for dialogue scenes; balances character and setting.

中景:腰部以上构图,常用于对话场景,平衡角色与背景。

Long Shot (LS): Shows the full figure in relation to the environment, establishing setting and character position.

远景:展示完整人物与环境的关系,用以确定场景与角色位置。

Low Angle: Camera looks up, making the subject appear powerful, dominant or threatening.

低角度:摄影机仰拍,使被摄主体显得强大、主导或有威胁性。

High Angle: Camera looks down, diminishing the subject’s importance or suggesting vulnerability.

高角度:摄影机俯拍,削弱主体重要性或暗示其脆弱。

Key light, fill light, back light: Three-point lighting creates depth and mood; high-key lighting suggests brightness and optimism, low-key lighting suggests mystery and fear.

主光、辅光、背光:三点布光营造立体感和情绪;高调用光暗示明亮乐观,低调用光暗示神秘恐惧。

9. Representation and Stereotypes | 表征与刻板印象

Stereotype = Simplified + Exaggerated + Repeated representation of a group

Representation: The way media portrays individuals, groups, places and events. It always involves selection and mediation, never a simple reflection of reality.

表征:媒体描绘个人、群体、地点和事件的方式。它总是涉及选择与中介,从不是现实的简单反射。

Stereotypes: Media often reduces a social group to a few exaggerated, easily recognised characteristics (e.g., the ‘nerdy Asian’, ‘angry black woman’).

刻板印象:媒体常将某个社会群体简化为少数被夸大的、容易识别的特征(例如“书呆子亚裔”、“愤怒的黑人女性”)。

Countertypes: A positive or deliberately contradictory representation that challenges dominant stereotypes.

反刻板类型:刻意建构的正面或矛盾表征,用以挑战主流刻板印象。

Ideological effect: Repeated stereotypes can lead audiences to see these simplified versions as ‘natural’, reinforcing social inequalities.

意识形态效果:反复出现的刻板印象会使受众将这些简化形象视为“自然”,进而强化社会不平等。

10. New Media and Participatory Culture | 新媒体与参与式文化

Prosumer = Producer + Consumer (Participatory culture)

Convergence (Jenkins): The flow of content across multiple platforms, the cooperation between media industries, and the migratory behaviour of audiences who will go anywhere in search of entertainment.

融合(詹金斯):内容在多个平台之间流动,媒介产业相互协作,受众为寻找娱乐而在不同平台间迁徙。

Participatory culture: Audiences no longer just consume media; they create, remix and share content (fan fiction, memes, reaction videos). This blurs the line between producer and consumer.

参与式文化:受众不再只是消费媒体;他们创造、混搭和分享内容(同人小说、表情包、反应视频),模糊了生产者与消费者的界限。

User-generated content (UGC): Platforms like YouTube, TikTok and Instagram thrive on content made by everyday users, democratising media production.

用户生成内容:YouTube、TikTok 和 Instagram 等平台以普通用户制作的内容为基础,使媒体生产平民化。

Collective intelligence: Participants pool knowledge online, contributing to wikis, forums and review sites, creating a shared information network.

集体智慧:参与者在线汇聚知识,为维基、论坛和评论网站做出贡献,形成共享信息网络。

11. Genre Theory: Repertoire of Elements | 类型理论:元素目录

Genre = Repeating set of elements: Iconography + Setting + Narrative + Character + Style

Iconography: The visual and sound signs immediately associated with a genre (e.g., cowboy hats and revolvers in Westerns, spaceships in sci-fi).

图像志:与某类型直接关联的视觉和声音符号(如西部片中的牛仔帽与左轮手枪,科幻片中的宇宙飞船)。

Setting: Typical locations that audiences expect (e.g., dark alleys in crime thrillers, abandoned houses in horror).

场景:观众期待的典型地点(如犯罪惊悚片中的幽暗小巷,恐怖片中的废弃房屋)。

Narrative structure: Predictable story patterns, such as the ‘boy meets girl’ romance arc or the ‘investigation-revelation’ crime plot.

叙事结构:可预期的故事模式,如“男孩遇见女孩”的爱情弧线或“调查-揭露”的犯罪情节。

Character types: Stock figures like the wise mentor, the anti-hero detective or the final girl in slasher films.

角色类型:公式化的角色,如睿智的导师、反英雄侦探,或砍杀电影中的“最后生还女孩”。

Style: Technical and audio codes – such as dramatic lighting, fast editing or orchestral music – that signal the genre.

风格:传递类型信号的技术和听觉符码,如戏剧化布光、快速剪辑或管弦乐配乐。
