1. What is Media Studies? |

Media Studies is the analysis of media texts, including film, television, advertising, news, and online content. It examines how meaning is created, how audiences interpret messages, and how media products reflect and shape society. The subject also explores the industries behind the texts, from production to regulation.

2. Media Language: Signs and Codes |

In Media Studies, a ‘sign’ is anything that conveys meaning. Signs can be words, images, sounds, or objects. Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure introduced the concepts of the ‘signifier’ (the physical form) and the ‘signified’ (the mental concept). Later, Roland Barthes highlighted the ideas of ‘denotation’ (literal, obvious meaning) and ‘connotation’ (associated, cultural meanings). Understanding these layers helps us decode media messages.

The table below shows how denotation and connotation work with a common symbol.

Signifier (能指) Denotation (明示义) Connotation (隐含义)
A red rose A flower with red petals Love, romance, passion
A skull Bone structure of a head Death, danger, piracy

Media products also use codes, which are systems of signs that create meaning. Technical codes include camera work, lighting, and editing. Symbolic codes include objects, colours, and body language. Written codes are the words used in captions, headlines, or dialogue.

3. Camera Shots and Angles |

Camera shots and angles are fundamental tools for visual storytelling. Each shot size communicates different information and emotions.

Extreme long shot (ELS): Shows a very wide view, often used as an establishing shot to set the scene, making characters appear small within their environment.

Long shot (LS): Frames the full subject from head to toe, providing context about the character’s surroundings and body language.

Medium shot (MS): Usually frames the subject from the waist up, commonly used in dialogue scenes to balance character interaction with background detail.

Close-up (CU): Focuses tightly on a character’s face or an object, revealing emotions and significant details.

Extreme close-up (ECU): Shows a very small detail, like an eye or a fingertip, often to create intensity or highlight a critical clue.

Camera angles also influence how we perceive characters. A high angle looks down on a subject, making it appear vulnerable or weak. A low angle looks up, giving the subject a sense of power or dominance. An eye-level angle is neutral, suggesting equality. A Dutch angle (canted frame) tilts the camera to create disorientation or tension.

4. Mise-en-Scène |

Mise-en-scène is a French term meaning ‘placing on stage’. It refers to everything that appears in the frame and how it is arranged. Key elements include setting, costume, lighting, colour, props, and body language.

Setting: The location and backdrop of a scene. It can establish time, place, and mood. For example, a dark, rainy alley typically connotes mystery or danger.

Costume and makeup: These reveal a character’s personality, status, occupation, or era. A lab coat suggests a scientist; a crown indicates royalty.

Lighting: High-key lighting produces bright, even illumination with few shadows, common in comedies and sitcoms. Low-key lighting creates strong contrasts and deep shadows, often used in horror and film noir to build suspense.

Colour: Colours carry symbolic meanings and can influence mood. Red may connote danger, passion, or anger; blue often suggests calm or sadness; green can be associated with nature or envy.

Props and body language: Objects characters interact with (props) can drive the narrative or reveal character traits. Body language and facial expressions communicate non-verbally – a clenched fist might show anger, a smile suggests friendliness.

5. Sound and Editing |

Sound in media is divided into diegetic and non-diegetic. Diegetic sound originates from within the story world: dialogue, footsteps, traffic, or music from a radio that characters can hear. Non-diegetic sound is added for the audience only, such as background music (score), voiceover narration, or sound effects that characters are unaware of.

Editing is the process of selecting and arranging shots to construct a narrative. Common editing techniques include:

The cut: an instantaneous change from one shot to another. It is the most basic transition.

The fade: a gradual transition to or from a black screen (fade in/fade out), often indicating the beginning or end of a sequence.

The dissolve: one shot gradually blends into the next, signalling a connection between scenes or the passage of time.

Montage: a series of shots edited together to compress time, convey a lot of information quickly, or create an emotional effect.

6. Representation | 表征

Representation refers to how media re-presents reality. It is never simply a mirror; instead, media producers select, construct, and mediate what we see. Every representation involves choices about what to include and exclude, shaping audience perceptions of people, events, and ideas.

Key areas of representation include gender, ethnicity, age, social class, and disability. For example, historical media often portrayed women in domestic roles, reinforcing traditional gender stereotypes. In contrast, contemporary media may challenge these by showing women in leadership positions. Similarly, ethnic minority groups have frequently been stereotyped or underrepresented, but more diverse representations are now increasingly demanded.

7. Stereotypes |

A stereotype is a simplified, commonly held image of a particular group. Stereotypes reduce complex individuals to a few exaggerated traits. For instance, teenagers might be stereotyped as lazy and rebellious, or elderly people as frail and out of touch. While stereotypes can sometimes contain a grain of truth, they are limiting and can lead to prejudice.

Media products also use ‘countertypes’ – representations that challenge and subvert dominant stereotypes. A countertype might be a female action hero who is strong and independent, or a business leader from a minority background depicted as successful and ethical. Recognising stereotypes and countertypes is essential for critical media analysis.

8. Audience | 受众

Every media product is created with a target audience in mind. A target audience is the specific group of people a product is aimed at, often defined by demographics and psychographics. Demographics include measurable characteristics such as age, gender, income, education, and occupation. Psychographics segment audiences by attitudes, values, interests, and lifestyle (e.g., ‘adventurers’, ‘conformists’, ‘reformers’).

The Uses and Gratifications Theory, proposed by Blumler and Katz, explains why audiences actively
