1. What is Philosophy? |
The word ‘philosophy’ comes from the Greek words philo (love) and sophia (wisdom), so it literally means ‘the love of wisdom’. Philosophy is not just a subject you study at school; it is an activity of asking deep, fundamental questions about the world and our place in it.
Philosophers try to think clearly and critically about questions that science alone cannot answer, such as: What does it mean to live a good life? How do we know what is real? Do we have free will? The aim is not always to find a single final answer, but to clarify the problems and evaluate different possible positions through reason and argument.
2. Branches of Philosophy |
Philosophy is a wide field, and it is traditionally divided into several main branches. Metaphysics explores the fundamental nature of reality, including questions about existence, time, space and causation. Epistemology is the theory of knowledge; it asks what we can know, how we know it, and what justifies our beliefs.
Ethics, or moral philosophy, is concerned with how we should act, what is right and wrong, and what makes a good life. Logic studies the principles of correct reasoning, helping us to distinguish good arguments from bad ones. Other branches include aesthetics (the philosophy of art and beauty) and political philosophy (questions about justice, authority and rights).
3. Logic and Argument |
In philosophy, an argument is not a heated row but a structured set of statements intended to support a conclusion. The statements that give support are called premises. A deductive argument aims to provide conclusive proof: if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. This is called a valid argument. If the argument is valid and all premises are actually true, it is sound.
Inductive arguments, on the other hand, provide support that makes the conclusion probable but not certain. They move from specific observations to a general claim. For example, seeing many white swans and concluding all swans are white is inductive reasoning. Philosophers must also watch out for fallacies – common errors in reasoning, such as the ad hominem (attacking the person, not the argument) or the straw man (misrepresenting someone’s position to attack it easily).
4. Socrates: The Father of Western Philosophy |
Socrates lived in Athens from 469 to 399 BCE and is often called the father of Western philosophy. He did not write any books himself; what we know about him comes mainly from the dialogues written by his student Plato. Socrates spent his life questioning fellow citizens about concepts like justice, piety and courage.
His method, now called the Socratic method, involved asking a series of questions to draw out people’s hidden assumptions and reveal contradictions in their thinking. One of his most famous sayings is ‘The unexamined life is not worth living’. In 399 BCE, he was sentenced to death on charges of corrupting the youth and impiety. He accepted his punishment, choosing to obey the law rather than flee into exile.
5. Plato’s Theory of Forms |
Plato (427–347 BCE), a student of Socrates, developed one of the most influential ideas in Western philosophy: the Theory of Forms. According to Plato, the physical world we see around us is only a shadow or imperfect copy of a higher, non-physical realm of Forms. These Forms are perfect, eternal and unchanging archetypes of all things, such as the Form of Beauty, the Form of Justice and the Form of a Circle.
Plato illustrates this with the famous Allegory of the Cave. In the story, prisoners are chained inside a cave, only able to see shadows projected on the wall. They mistake these shadows for reality. When one prisoner escapes and sees the real world and the sun, he realises the shadows were mere appearances. The escaped prisoner represents the philosopher who grasps the Forms, while the others represent ordinary people trapped in ignorance.
6. Aristotle and Virtue Ethics |
Aristotle (384–322 BCE) studied at Plato’s Academy and later became the tutor of Alexander the Great. He rejected Plato’s Theory of Forms and instead focused on the world of experience. In ethics, Aristotle developed virtue ethics, which is not primarily about following rules or calculating consequences, but about cultivating good character.
The key concept is the Golden Mean: every virtue lies at a balanced midpoint between two vices – one of excess and the other of deficiency. For example, courage is the mean between recklessness (too much fearlessness) and cowardice (too much fear). The ultimate goal of human life, according to Aristotle, is eudaimonia, often translated as ‘flourishing’ or ‘happiness’. This is achieved by living a life of rational activity in accordance with virtue.
7. The Existence of God – Arguments and Challenges |
Many philosophers and theologians have tried to prove that God exists. The ontological argument, first developed by Anselm, defines God as ‘that than which nothing greater can be conceived’. Anselm argues that such a being must exist in reality, because existing in reality is greater than existing only in the mind.
The cosmological argument, associated with Thomas Aquinas, points out that everything in the universe has a cause. There cannot be an infinite chain of causes, so there must be a First Cause or Prime Mover, which people call God. The teleological argument, or argument from design, presented by William Paley, compares the universe to a watch: its order and complexity suggest an intelligent designer.
However, these arguments face challenges. Critics ask ‘Who made God?’ in response to the cosmological argument. The theory of evolution by natural selection provides a non-theistic explanation for the complexity of life. The Big Bang theory gives an account of the origin of the universe without necessarily requiring a divine cause. Furthermore, the problem of evil questions whether a perfectly good God would create a world with so much suffering.
8. The Problem of Evil |
The problem of evil is one of the most powerful arguments against the existence of an all-powerful, all-knowing and all-loving God. If God has the power to stop evil, the knowledge to know about it, and the desire to prevent it, why does evil still exist? Philosophers distinguish between moral evil (evil caused by human choices, such as murder or cruelty) and natural evil (suffering caused by natural events, like earthquakes or diseases).
Several theodicies have been proposed to explain why a good God allows suffering. The free will defence argues that God gave humans free will so that they could genuinely love and choose good. Without the possibility of choosing evil, free will would be meaningless, and a world with free will is more valuable than one without it. Therefore, moral evil results from the misuse of free will.
Another response is the soul-making theodicy, developed by John Hick. It suggests that suffering and hardship are necessary for spiritual growth. Facing challenges helps humans develop virtues such as courage, compassion and patience. In this view, life is a process of character building, and evil is a tool that makes moral improvement possible.
9. Mind and Body: Dualism vs Materialism |
One of the central puzzles in philosophy is the relationship between the mind and the body. Are they two completely different substances, or is the mind simply the product of physical brain activity? The view known as substance dualism, famously defended by René Descartes, holds that the mind is a non-physical thinking substance, while the body is a physical extended substance. They interact, but are distinct.
In contrast, materialism (or physicalism) claims that everything that exists is physical, including the mind. Mental states, such as pain or happiness, are nothing over and above brain states. From this perspective, consciousness is simply what the brain does, much like breathing is what the lungs do.
A major difficulty for materialism is the ‘hard problem of consciousness’: why and how do physical processes in the brain give rise to subjective, first-person experience? We can explain how the eye detects light, but why is seeing a sunset accompanied by a vivid feeling? This remains an open question in philosophy and science.
10. Free Will and Determinism |
Do we genuinely choose our actions, or are all our decisions determined by prior causes? This is the classic debate over free will and determinism. Determinism claims that every event is the inevitable result of previous causes, according to the laws of nature. If the universe operates like a great mechanism, then human choices are no exception – they are simply one link in an unbroken causal chain.
If determinism is true, it raises troubling questions about moral responsibility. If a person’s actions are predetermined by their genes, upbringing and environment, can we really hold them blameworthy or praiseworthy? Some philosophers, called hard determinists, accept that determinism rules out free will and therefore call for a revision of our ideas of punishment and reward.
Libertarians in philosophy argue that we do have free will and that determinism is false. They appeal to our powerful intuition that we could have done otherwise when making a choice. Compatibilism, also called soft determinism, seeks a middle ground: it says that free will and determinism are compatible. We are free as long as our actions flow from our own desires and character, even if those desires are themselves caused by prior factors.
