Before you can analyse data, you must collect it reliably. Data can be primary (collected yourself) or secondary (collected by someone else). A more robust measure is the interquartile range (IQR). It tells you the spread of the middle 50% of the data and is not influenced by outliers. Edexcel questions often ask you to compare distributions using both an average and a measure of spread.

Probability lays the foundation for inferential statistics. It describes how likely an event is, on a scale from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain). Probability can be expressed as a fraction, decimal or percentage. The theoretical probability is calculated from equally likely outcomes, while experimental probability comes from actual trials.

Scatter graphs display the relationship between two continuous variables. Each point represents a pair of values (x, y). By looking at the pattern, you can describe the correlation: positive (as x increases, y increases), negative (as x increases, y decreases) or no correlation.

Making predictions within the data range is interpolation (reliable); extending the line beyond the data range is extrapolation (unreliable). Remember, correlation does not imply causation.

The Edexcel specification (1ST0) covers six key areas: Collection of data, Processing and representing data, Probability, Averages and spread, Time series, and Inference. Your summer work should focus on securing the basic skills so you can later handle probability distributions, comparative box plots and hypothesis testing with confidence.
