The unit test typically covers core concepts such as media language, representation, audience, and media institutions. Therefore, this analysis includes six sample questions that mirror the format and difficulty of a real assessment, followed by common errors and revision tips.

1. Mock Exam Structure and Key Topics |

The mock paper is divided into a set of short-answer and extended-analysis questions worth a total of 25 marks. It tests knowledge of camera shots, audience classification, representation codes, the role of regulators, advertising persuasion, and pre-production planning. Each question is designed to reflect typical SQA Year 9 assessment objectives: knowledge and understanding, analysis, and creative planning.

Having a clear picture of the exam structure helps you allocate time wisely. The first three questions are primarily knowledge-based and should be answered swiftly, while the later analysis and creative questions require more detailed responses to access higher marks.

2. Question 1: Media Language Terminology – Defining Camera Shots |

Question (3 marks): Define the following media language terms: close-up, wide shot, low angle. Then provide an example of how each might be used to create meaning in a film.

Model Answer – A close-up is a shot that tightly frames a character’s face or an object, highlighting emotions or details; for example, a close-up of a character crying reveals sadness. A wide shot (or long shot) shows a broader view of a scene, often establishing location or isolating a character; a wide shot of a lone figure on a hill can convey loneliness. A low angle is when the camera looks up at a subject, making them appear powerful or dominant; a low angle shot of a villain can make them seem threatening.

To gain full marks in such a terminology question, you must provide both a clear definition and an accurate example that links to meaning. Vague phrases like “a close-up shows something close” will not earn marks unless you explain the effect.

3. Question 2: Representation in a Film Poster – Heroic Codes |

Question (4 marks): Study the film poster below (imagined: a superhero poster with a central figure in a red cape, standing on a rooftop at sunset, arms crossed). Identify two ways the poster represents the central character as heroic. Use media language in your answer.
