1. Duverger’s Law |

Duverger’s Law states that single-member district plurality electoral systems, such as First Past the Post (FPTP), strongly favour the development of a two-party system. Under FPTP, only the candidate with the most votes in each district wins a seat. Voters quickly realise that backing a small party with little chance of winning is a wasted vote, so they strategically shift their support to the less objectionable of the two largest parties. This psychological effect, combined with the mechanical effect of the electoral rule, squeezes out minor parties over successive elections.

First Past the Post → Two-Party System

The law is famously observed in the United States, where the Electoral College and congressional elections have reinforced the dominance of the Democratic and Republican parties for over a century. The United Kingdom also long followed a FPTP-fuelled two-party pattern, though devolution and regional parties now complicate the picture.

2. Median Voter Theorem |

In a two-party system where voters’ preferences can be arranged along a single left-right axis, both parties will converge their policy platforms towards the position of the median voter. The median voter is the individual whose preference splits the electorate exactly in half: half of voters are to the left, half to the right. Any party that drifts too far towards an ideological extreme risks losing the crucial middle ground and thus the election. This theorem explains why major parties often sound very similar during campaigns.

Party Policy ≈ Median Voter’s Preference

A real-world illustration can be seen in UK general elections, where Labour and the Conservatives frequently target the ‘centre ground’, moderating their messages to capture floating voters. Political strategists use polling data to locate where the median voter sits on issues like tax, healthcare, and public spending.

3. Political Spectrum Formula |

The classic political spectrum runs from Left to Right, largely defined by attitudes towards economic equality and the role of the state. A simplified formula captures this: the Left favours more government intervention to reduce inequality and provide collective public services; the Right favours less intervention, prioritising individual economic freedom and private enterprise. In modern political analysis, a second axis is often added, stretching from Authoritarian (strict obedience to authority, limited personal freedoms) to Libertarian (maximum individual liberty and minimal state control).

Left = Higher Intervention + Equality
Right = Lower Intervention + Liberty

Political parties can then be plotted on a two-dimensional chart. For instance, a party that advocates a large welfare state but also supports strict surveillance laws would be economically left-wing but socially authoritarian. This multi-axis approach helps explain alliances that might seem puzzling on a simple left-right line.

4. The Laffer Curve |

The Laffer Curve shows the relationship between tax rates and total tax revenue collected by the government. It suggests that there is an optimal tax rate that maximises revenue. At a rate of 0%, the government collects nothing; at a rate of 100%, people have no incentive to work or invest, so taxable income collapses and revenue also approaches zero. Somewhere between these extremes, revenue peaks. If tax rates are pushed beyond this optimal point, further increases actually reduce government income because they shrink the tax base too much.

Revenue = Tax Rate × Tax Base
The Peak is at the Optimal Rate

Although mainly an economic concept, the Laffer Curve is hugely influential in political debates about whether to cut or raise taxes. Politicians on the right often cite it to argue that lower taxes can lead to higher revenue through economic growth, while those on the left caution that many economies are well to the left of the revenue-maximising point, so tax cuts may simply starve public services.

5. Iron Law of Oligarchy |

Sociologist Robert Michels formulated the Iron Law of Oligarchy after studying political parties and trade unions. He concluded that all large organisations, even those founded on democratic ideals, inevitably become dominated by a small ruling elite. As an organisation grows, it needs specialisation, administrative hierarchy, and full-time officials. These leaders gain control over information, resources, and communication, gradually insulating themselves from the rank-and-file membership. Eventually, they come to pursue their own interests rather than the original mission of the group.

Large Organisation + Time → Oligarchy

We can see the Iron Law at work in political parties where a small central committee or leader holds most of the power, despite the existence of democratic constitutions. Even grassroots movements often develop professional staff who become more influential than volunteers, subtly transforming the group’s priorities. Michels’ insight remains a cautionary reminder that democracy requires constant maintenance.

6. Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem |

Economist Kenneth Arrow proved that when voters have three or more choices, no voting system can convert individual preferences into a fair community-wide ranking while satisfying a small set of reasonable conditions. These conditions include non-dictatorship (no single person should decide the outcome), Pareto efficiency (if everyone prefers A to B, society should prefer A to B), and independence of irrelevant alternatives (the ranking between two options should not change because a third option is introduced). Arrow demonstrated that these criteria conflict, so any voting system will violate at least one of them in some situations.

∄ Perfect Voting System
(No system can satisfy all fair criteria simultaneously)

This theorem is the foundation of social choice theory. It helps explain the strange outcomes that sometimes occur in elections, such as when a candidate who would lose one-on-one contests against every other candidate still wins under a particular voting system. Arrow’s work reminds us that electoral engineering is always a matter of trade-offs.

7. Democratic Peace Theory |

Democratic Peace Theory holds that mature democracies rarely, if ever, wage war against one another. The ‘formula’ captures this regularity: when two democratic states interact, the probability of armed conflict between them drops dramatically. Scholars attribute this to several factors: democratic leaders are accountable to voters who bear the costs of war; democracies share norms of negotiation and compromise; and their political institutions make it harder to rush into war without transparency and public debate.

Democracy A × Democracy B → High Probability of Peace

It is important to note that democracies have frequently been involved in wars with non-democracies, and that the theory does not claim democratic states are inherently more peaceful—only that they tend not to fight each other. Ongoing research debates whether this correlation implies causation, but the pattern is striking enough to influence foreign policy thinking.
