📚 Year 9 WJEC Art: Formula & Theorem Quick Reference Handbook | Year 9 WJEC

Art may seem to be about free expression, but behind every striking composition lies a set of visual ‘formulas’ – repeatable principles of colour, proportion, contrast and structure that artists have relied on for centuries. This quick reference handbook gathers the essential formulas and theorems every Year 9 WJEC Art student should have at their fingertips, from colour-wheel mathematics to the golden ratio and atmospheric perspective. Think of each principle as a tool you can reach for when planning, analysing or refining your own artwork.

1. The Colour Wheel Formula |

The 12-hue colour wheel is built on a simple arithmetic: primary colours (red, yellow, blue) are spaced equally. Secondary colours (orange, green, violet) sit exactly halfway between two primaries – red + yellow = orange. Tertiary colours fill the remaining gaps, such as red-orange or blue-green. Understanding this structure lets you predict colour relationships instantly.

2. Complementary Contrast Theorem |

Colours directly opposite on the colour wheel – red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple – create the strongest possible contrast. Placed side by side, each makes the other appear more vivid. This is not just theory; it is a perceptual law rooted in the way our eyes fatigue and seek balance. Use complementary pairs to make focal points ‘pop’ or to build tension in a composition.

3. Golden Ratio Composition |

The golden ratio, approximately 1.618:1, appears repeatedly in nature and has been used by artists from Leonardo da Vinci to contemporary photographers. To apply it, divide your canvas into sections where the ratio of the larger part to the smaller part equals the ratio of the whole to the larger part. This creates a spiral or a set of harmonious rectangles that guide the viewer’s eye naturally across the work.

4. Rule of Thirds |

Divide your image into nine equal parts with two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines. Place key elements along these lines or at their intersections. This off-centre placement nearly always feels more dynamic and balanced than placing the subject dead centre. The rule of thirds is the quickest compositional formula to transform a static scene into an engaging one.

5. Atmospheric Perspective Formula |

As objects recede into the distance, three things happen: colours cool (shift toward blue), contrast decreases, and details soften. The formula is simple – more atmosphere between you and the subject equals more blue, less contrast, and blurred edges. Use this rule to create a convincing sense of depth in landscapes or any scene with distance.

6. Value Scale Formula |

A full range of values is the skeleton of realistic drawing and painting. A standard 10-step value scale runs from pure white (value 10) to pure black (value 1). Mid-tone grey sits at value 5. Without a minimum of five distinct values in your work, forms will appear flat. Aim to include highlights, light mid-tones, mid-tones, dark mid-tones, and shadows as a basic recipe.

Value 10 White Value 9 Value 8 Value 7 Value 6 Value 5 Mid-grey Value 4 Value 3 Value 2 Value 1 Black

7. Colour Harmony Triads |

Selecting colours that naturally harmonise can be systematised. An equilateral triangle on the colour wheel gives a triadic scheme (e.g., orange, green, violet) – vibrant but balanced. A square or rectangle yields a tetradic scheme. The closer the colours on the wheel, the calmer the effect; the farther apart, the more energetic. Use these geometric formulas to build deliberate colour palettes.

8. Line Emotion Theorem |

Lines carry emotional weight. Horizontal lines suggest calm, rest and stability. Vertical lines communicate strength, dignity and formality. Diagonal lines imply movement, action and instability. Curved lines convey softness, comfort and organic flow. Combine these ’emotional equations’ to reinforce the message of your composition – a portrait leaning on verticals feels stately; a stormy sea with strong diagonals feels chaotic.

9. Shape and Form Geometry |

Shapes (2D) become forms (3D) when you add depth using specific modelling signals. The basic formula: a circle becomes a sphere by adding a crescent shadow and a highlight; a square becomes a cube by drawing converging edges; a triangle becomes a cone with a curved base and a single vanishing-point shadow. Practice these geometric transformations until they become instinctive, because almost every object can be built from these primitives.

10. Texture Illusion Formula |

Texture in 2D artwork is a trick of mark-making. The formula: observe the surface’s actual pattern, then translate it into rhythmic marks. Rough textures use irregular, multi-directional strokes; smooth textures use blended, even tones. For shiny surfaces, add sharp contrasts and crisp highlights. For matte surfaces, keep the tonal transitions gradual and soft. The more variety in your mark types, the richer the tactile illusion.

11. Balance Symmetry Theorem |

Visual balance can be symmetrical (mirror-like) or asymmetrical. Symmetry creates order and calm, but can become static. The asymmetrical balance formula: a small, dark, or complex shape near the edge can balance a larger, lighter, or simpler shape on the opposite side. This is visual ‘weight’ – think of a seesaw where intensity and position compensate for size. Use this theorem to keep your composition stable without being boring.

12. Repetition and Rhythm |

Repetition of an element – a colour, shape, line or texture – creates visual rhythm, much like a musical beat. Regular repetition feels calm and predictable; irregular repetition creates excitement. The formula for a strong pattern: establish a motif, then vary it slightly in scale, spacing or colour to keep the eye moving. Rhythm prevents a piece from feeling chaotic or accidental; it gives your artwork an underlying pulse.
