📚 Year 9 WJEC Engineering: Summer Prep & Bridging Course | Year 9 WJEC

Welcome to the Year 9 WJEC Engineering Summer Prep and Bridging Course. This resource is designed to help you transition smoothly from Key Stage 3 Design & Technology into the more focused world of GCSE Engineering. By exploring fundamental concepts in materials, mechanics, electronics and design, you will build confidence and get a head start on the WJEC specification.

1. What Is Engineering? |

Engineering is about turning scientific principles into real solutions. From the smartphone in your pocket to the bridges you cross, engineers design, build and test the products that shape our modern world. In your GCSE Engineering course, you will learn to think like an engineer, applying maths and physics to practical challenges.

The field is divided into disciplines such as mechanical, electrical, civil, and electronic engineering. During this bridging programme, you will taste each of these areas through hands-on concepts and mini-projects.

2. Health and Safety in the Workshop |

Safety is the engineer’s number one priority. Before you touch any tool or machine, you must understand how to protect yourself and others. A tidy, well-organised workspace is the foundation of safe engineering.

Always wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety goggles, ear defenders, and steel-toe boots when required. Loose clothing must be secured, long hair tied back, and jewellery removed near moving parts.

Never operate a machine unless you have been properly trained and authorised. Report any damaged equipment or spills immediately, and always follow the safe system of work or risk assessment for each task.

3. Materials and Their Properties |

Engineers choose materials based on their properties: strength, hardness, toughness, ductility, and conductivity. Common classifications include metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites. Understanding these groups helps you select the right material for a given design.

Metals such as mild steel and aluminium are strong and can be shaped by cutting or bending. Polymers like acrylic and nylon are lightweight and corrosion-resistant, making them ideal for casings and everyday products.

Composite materials combine two or more distinct materials to achieve superior properties – for example, carbon fibre reinforced polymer is both stiff and light, often used in aerospace and sports equipment.
