Boscastle is a small village on the north coast of Cornwall, England. On 16 August 2004, it experienced a catastrophic flash flood. The impacts were dramatic: around 100 cars swept out to sea, homes and businesses flooded with contaminated water, and the tourism industry suffered. Fortunately, no lives were lost thanks to a massive rescue operation involving helicopters. The Environment Agency subsequently invested £4.6 million in flood management, widening and deepening the river channel, raising car parks, and installing better warning systems. This case study is excellent for illustrating the causes of flooding (physical and human) and the cost–benefit of hard engineering.

Farmers and residents at Easington, where a gas terminal is at risk, campaign for more protection, while environmentalists argue for managed retreat. This case perfectly demonstrates the conflict between economic interests and environmental sustainability, as well as the limits of coastal engineering.
