📚 Year 9 WJEC Science: Summer Preparation & Bridging Course | Year 9 WJEC

Welcome to your Year 9 WJEC Science summer bridging course! This programme is designed to consolidate your Key Stage 3 knowledge and give you a head start on the GCSE curriculum. Over the summer, we will revisit fundamental concepts in biology, chemistry and physics while developing scientific skills that are essential for success in your future studies.

1. Course Overview & Aims |

This bridging course covers the three science disciplines as outlined by WJEC for Year 9. Our main aim is to strengthen your understanding of core topics such as cells, atomic structure, forces and energy transfers. We will also focus on practical enquiry skills, data analysis and the use of scientific models. By the end of this revision, you will feel confident moving into the GCSE programme.

2. Scientific Enquiry & Lab Safety |

Working scientifically is at the heart of WJEC Science. You must be able to plan experiments, identify variables (independent, dependent and control), take accurate measurements and evaluate risks. Remember to always wear safety goggles when handling chemicals or heating substances. Understanding hazard symbols is also key.

3. Biology Foundations: Cells, Tissues & Organs |

All living organisms are made of cells. In Year 9, you need to know the differences between animal and plant cells. Plant cells have a cell wall, chloroplasts and a large permanent vacuole, which animal cells lack. Organisms can be unicellular or multicellular; complex organisms have cells organised into tissues, organs and systems.

Nucleus / 细胞核 Contains DNA and controls cell activities / 含有 DNA,控制细胞活动
Absorb light for photosynthesis (plants only) / 吸收光能进行光合作用(仅植物)

Understanding how specialised cells are adapted to their function is also essential. For example, red blood cells have no nucleus to maximise space for haemoglobin, while root hair cells have a large surface area for absorbing water.

4. Chemistry Introduction: Atoms, Elements & Reactions |

Chemistry begins with the periodic table. Atoms are the building blocks of all matter. Each element is made of one type of atom and is represented by a chemical symbol. Compounds form when two or more elements chemically combine. In Year 9, you will revise how to write simple word equations and symbol equations for reactions such as oxidation and neutralisation.

A key concept is conservation of mass: in a chemical reaction, atoms are rearranged, not created or destroyed. The total mass of reactants equals the total mass of products. This is why we balance equations.

Example: 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO

A useful table summarising common chemical formulae:

Water / 水 H₂O

5. Physics Essentials: Forces, Energy & Motion |

In physics, forces can change the speed, direction or shape of an object. Resultant force is the overall force acting on an object. If the resultant force is zero, the object is in equilibrium and moves at constant speed or stays still. This is linked to Newton’s First Law.

You must also understand energy transfers. The law of conservation of energy states that energy can be transferred usefully, stored or dissipated, but not created or destroyed. Common energy stores include kinetic, thermal, chemical and gravitational potential energy.

Kinetic energy = ½ × mass × (speed)²

6. Cross-cutting Concepts: Models & Systems |

Scientists use models to represent things that are too small, too large or too complex to observe directly. The particle model of matter helps explain states of matter, density and changes of state. In biology, the lock-and-key model represents enzyme action. These models are powerful but have limitations.

Thinking about systems—such as the circulatory system or an electrical circuit—helps you see how different parts work together. In Year 9, you will learn to identify inputs, processes and outputs in biological, physical and environmental systems.

7. Maths in Science |

Mathematics is the language of science. You will need to calculate means, plot graphs, interpret scatter diagrams and use simple equations. Learn to rearrange formulas such as speed = distance ÷ time. Always include units in your answers.
