AQA GCSE Citizenship Practical Assessment: Investigation & Action Key Points | AQA GCSE

📚 AQA GCSE Citizenship Practical Assessment: Investigation & Action Key Points | AQA GCSE

The AQA GCSE Citizenship Studies non-exam assessment (NEA) is your chance to move beyond textbooks and engage with real-world issues. In this component, you will carry out a citizenship investigation and then take a citizenship action to address a problem in your community or wider society. Mastering the practical assessment requires careful planning, evidence gathering, evaluation and personal reflection — all of which are key skills for active citizenship.

1. Understanding the NEA Components |

The NEA for AQA GCSE Citizenship is divided into two linked but distinct parts: the Citizenship Investigation and the Citizenship Action. The investigation requires you to research a citizenship issue of your choice, using both primary and secondary sources. The action then asks you to design, carry out and evaluate a practical activity that aims to bring about a change or raise awareness about that issue. Both parts are marked holistically using common assessment objectives, so they should clearly connect.

2. Selecting a Suitable Issue |

Choose an issue that is genuinely citizenship-related, meaning it involves rights, responsibilities, democracy, justice or community action. It must have a clear local, national or global dimension, and there should be scope for you to carry out meaningful research and take practical action. Avoid topics that are too broad (e.g. ‘poverty’) — narrow it down, for example to ‘food bank usage in our town’ or ‘single-use plastic waste at school’.

3. Planning the Investigation |

Begin by formulating a clear research question that guides your investigation. Identify what secondary sources you will use (news articles, official reports, websites of relevant organisations) and what primary data you will collect (questionnaires, interviews, observations). Create a timeline with milestones for each stage: background reading, design of data-collection tools, fieldwork, analysis and writing up. This planning stage is essential to keep your work manageable.

4. Carrying Out Primary Research |

Primary research must be ethical, safe and well-organised. If you use a questionnaire, pilot it first and keep questions clear and unbiased. When interviewing someone, prepare open-ended questions, ask for consent and record responses accurately. Remember to collect evidence of the process — blank and completed questionnaires, photos of interview notes, screenshots of online surveys — as these will need to be submitted as part of your work.

5. Analysing and Presenting Findings |

Once you have gathered data, present your findings clearly using tables, bar charts or simple graphs where appropriate. Avoid simply describing the data — interpret what it means in relation to your research question. Point out patterns, anomalies and any limitations in your evidence. You should also compare primary findings with secondary sources to build a balanced analysis.

6. Developing a Citizenship Action |

Your citizenship action should flow directly from your investigation findings and aim to make a difference. Typical actions include organising a campaign (e.g. a petition, social media awareness drive), volunteering, presenting to decision-makers (e.g. school council, local MP) or creating an educational resource. Produce a clear plan stating your aims, target audience, resources needed, measures of success and a risk assessment if necessary.

7. Taking Action and Evaluating Impact |

Carry out your planned action, documenting the process with photos, logs, attendance records or feedback forms. After the action, evaluate its impact honestly against your original success criteria. Did it raise awareness? Did it change attitudes or behaviour? What went well and what would you improve? Use specific evidence, such as comments from participants or before-and-after comparisons, to support your evaluation.

8. Reflection and Skill Development |

Reflection is a crucial part of the NEA. Discuss the citizenship skills you have developed, such as advocacy, teamwork, communication, research and problem-solving. Consider how your understanding of citizenship concepts — rights, democracy, justice, participation — has deepened. Be honest about challenges you faced and how you overcame them. A mature reflection demonstrates personal growth and a high level of engagement with the assessment objectives.

9. Meeting Assessment Objectives |

Your NEA is assessed against three main objectives: AO2 (apply knowledge and understanding of citizenship concepts), AO3 (analyse and evaluate evidence and viewpoints to construct reasoned arguments) and AO4 (plan, take and evaluate citizenship actions). Ensure your work explicitly demonstrates each one. For AO2, use accurate terminology and link your issue to concepts such as fairness or representation. For AO3, weigh different perspectives and justify your conclusions. For AO4, present a coherent narrative from planning to action, with clear evaluation.

你的 NEA 主要依据三个评估目标进行评分:AO2(应用公民概念的知识与理解),AO3(分析和评价证据与观点,构建有理由的论证),以及 AO4(规划、采取并评估公民行动)。

10. Common Pitfalls to Avoid |

Many students lose marks by choosing an issue that is not truly citizenship-focused, or by describing their action without any meaningful evaluation. Another common mistake is doing excessive secondary research while neglecting primary data, or the opposite — collecting data without linking it to key concepts. Avoid submitting disorganised evidence and remember to reference all secondary sources. Plagiarism is strictly penalised, so always use your own words.

11. Tips for High Marks |

To access the highest mark bands, you need to show a sophisticated understanding of how your issue relates to wider citizenship themes, such as the nature of democracy or the balance between rights and responsibilities. Your analysis should consider different viewpoints, including those that challenge your own. Use a variety of primary research methods and be rigorous in evaluating their effectiveness. Finally, make your personal engagement visible — don’t just report, reflect deeply on the whole experience.

12. Final Checklist Before Submission |

Before you submit, check the following: have you clearly stated your research question and linked it to citizenship concepts? Does your investigation include both primary and secondary sources with proper referencing? Is your action plan detailed and is the action itself evidenced? Have you evaluated impact using specific criteria? Is your reflection personal and insightful? Run through the mark scheme descriptors to ensure you have addressed each assessment objective fully, and keep all your evidence well-ordered in a portfolio.
