1. Population Dynamics | 人口动态

Population change is driven by birth rate, death rate and migration. The birth rate is the number of live births per 1000 people per year, while the death rate is the number of deaths per 1000 people per year. Natural increase (or decrease) is the difference between the two.

Natural increase = Birth rate − Death rate

Population pyramids (age‑sex graphs) reveal the structure of a population. A constrictive pyramid with a narrow base suggests an ageing population and low birth rates, common in Stage 4 or 5.

The Demographic Transition Model describes how birth and death rates change as a country develops. Stage 1 (high stationary): both rates are high and fluctuate due to famine, disease and war, so population growth is very slow. Stage 2 (early expanding): death rate falls rapidly because of improved healthcare and sanitation, while birth rate remains high, leading to rapid population increase. Stage 3 (late expanding): birth rate starts to decline as a result of urbanisation, better education and access to contraception. Stage 4 (low stationary): both birth and death rates are low, so the population remains stable or grows slowly. Stage 5 (decline): death rate slightly exceeds birth rate, resulting in natural decrease.

The dependency ratio compares the economically dependent (under 15 and over 65) to the working‑age population (15‑64). A high dependency ratio puts pressure on healthcare, education and social services.

2. Migration | 人口迁移

Migration is the movement of people across a boundary with the intention of establishing a permanent or semi‑permanent residence. Push factors are negative aspects of the origin area that drive people away, while pull factors are positive attributes of the destination that attract migrants.

Common push factors include unemployment, poverty, war, natural disasters, and lack of services. Typical pull factors include better job opportunities, higher wages, political stability, good education and healthcare.

Migration can be classified as internal (within a country) or international (across borders). It can be voluntary or forced (e.g. refugees fleeing conflict). Rural‑to‑urban migration is the dominant flow in many developing countries, driven by industrialisation and perceived city opportunities.

3. Settlement Patterns | 定居点模式

Settlement site refers to the actual land on which a settlement is built, while situation describes the settlement’s location in relation to its surrounding features, such as rivers, trade routes or defensive positions. Wet point sites, dry point sites and bridging points are common historical site factors.

Settlement hierarchy ranks settlements by size, population and the services they provide. From small to large these are: isolated dwelling, hamlet, village, town, city and metropolis. The higher the order, the fewer the settlements and the greater the range of services. Threshold population is the minimum number of people needed to support a service.

The Hoyt model modifies this with sectors developed along transport routes.

4. Plate Tectonics | 板块构造

The Earth’s structure consists of the inner core, outer core, mantle and crust. The crust and upper mantle form the lithosphere, which is broken into tectonic plates that float on the semi‑molten asthenosphere. Heat from radioactive decay in the core creates convection currents in the mantle, driving plate movement.

Collision boundaries build fold mountains when two continental plates meet, e.g. the Himalayas.

Earthquakes emit seismic waves (P, S and surface waves). The focus is the point of rupture underground; the epicentre is the point on the surface directly above. Richter scale measures magnitude; Mercalli scale measures intensity.

Floodplains and levees develop through repeated flooding events, depositing alluvium. Deltas form at the river mouth where sediment is deposited faster than it is removed by tides or currents.

Causes of flooding include heavy rainfall, snowmelt, deforestation and urbanisation reducing infiltration. Hard engineering strategies (dams, levees, channel straightening) and soft engineering (afforestation, floodplain zoning, restoration of wetlands) can reduce flood risk.

6. Coastal Processes | 海岸过程

Waves are the primary force shaping coastlines. Constructive waves have a strong swash and weak backwash, depositing material to build up beaches. Destructive waves have a weak swash and strong backwash, eroding the coast. Waves erode through hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition and solution. Sub‑aerial processes like weathering and mass movement also weaken cliffs.

7. Weather and Climate | 天气与气候

Weather is the day‑to‑day state of the atmosphere, while climate is the average weather conditions over 30 years or more. Key elements of weather include temperature, precipitation, wind speed and direction, humidity, cloud cover and atmospheric pressure.

Biomes are large‑scale ecosystems, such as tropical rainforests, deserts, grasslands and tundra, distributed according to climate.

The nutrient cycle is rapid with most nutrients stored in the biomass, not the soil.

The Human Development Index (HDI) combines life expectancy, education and income into a single score from 0 to 1.
