SQA Philosophy Exam Techniques and Marking Criteria | SQA

📚 SQA Philosophy Exam Techniques and Marking Criteria | SQA

Mastering the SQA Philosophy exam requires more than just knowing the theories of Plato, Hume or Kant. You must understand how marks are awarded and how to present your arguments clearly under timed conditions. This guide explains the key marking criteria, command words, and practical techniques to help you achieve a top grade in your Year 10 SQA Philosophy assessment.

1. Understanding the SQA Philosophy Marking Criteria | 了解 SQA 哲学评分标准

SQA Philosophy exams typically assess two main skill areas: Knowledge and Understanding (KU) and Analysis and Evaluation (AE). KU marks reward your ability to recall and explain philosophical concepts accurately, while AE marks assess your critical thinking, including the ability to analyse arguments and evaluate strengths and weaknesses.

Each question will state the total marks and often break them down into KU and AE. For example, a 6-mark question might offer 4 marks for KU and 2 for AE. Understanding this split helps you tailor your answer’s depth and ensures you do not neglect the evaluative component.

Always check the wording carefully. A question that asks ‘To what extent…’ or ‘Evaluate…’ carries far more AE marks than one that begins with ‘Describe…’. Allocating time based on the mark distribution is a crucial exam skill.

2. Command Words and Their Meanings |

SQA questions use specific command words that indicate exactly what you must do. Common command words include ‘Describe’, ‘Explain’, ‘Analyse’, ‘Evaluate’, and ‘To what extent…’. Misinterpreting these can cost you valuable marks.

Command Word (指令词) Meaning (含义) What to Do (该怎么做)
Give a detailed account of a concept or theory without evaluating it.
Make something clear by giving reasons or showing how it works.
Break down ideas into parts and examine relationships between them.
Make a judgement based on criteria; discuss strengths and weaknesses.
To what extent… Consider both sides of an argument and reach a reasoned conclusion on the degree of agreement.

Always underline or circle the command word in the exam paper so you never forget the task. An ‘Evaluate’ answer that only describes will score zero AE marks.

3. Knowledge and Understanding (KU) Marks | 知识与理解(KU)分数

KU marks are awarded for accurate recall of philosophical theories, concepts, and thinkers. You need to define key terms precisely, name relevant philosophers correctly, and outline their arguments without mixing up details. Vague statements like ‘it is about happiness’ will not gain full marks.

For example, if asked about Utilitarianism, you must mention Bentham’s principle of utility and the hedonic calculus, distinguishing between higher and lower pleasures if discussing Mill. Simply paraphrasing the question does not demonstrate knowledge.

Use technical vocabulary like ‘a priori’, ’empirical’, ‘teleological’, ‘deontological’, ‘absolutist’ and ‘relativist’ appropriately. This signals to the examiner that you are in command of the subject matter.

4. Analysis and Evaluation (AE) Marks | 分析与评价(AE)分数

AE marks are often the differentiator between a pass and a top grade. Analysis requires you to identify components of an argument and examine how they work together. Evaluation requires you to make a supported judgement about the effectiveness or validity of a position.

A strong evaluative point does not simply say ‘this argument is strong’ but explains why it is logically sound or practically applicable, and also acknowledges a limitation. For instance, you might argue that Kantian ethics is consistent because it is universal, but it can be rigid in situations where lying would save a life.

Phrases like ‘This is convincing because…’, ‘However, a significant weakness is…’, ‘On balance…’ and ‘A counter-argument could be…’ are excellent for securing AE marks.

5. Structuring Your Answers |

A clear structure makes it easier for the examiner to award marks. For longer questions, use a simple Introduction-Body-Conclusion format. Start by defining any key terms and stating your line of argument. Then develop your points in logical paragraphs, and finish with a concluding judgement.

Each paragraph should focus on one idea and often follow the PEEL model: Point, Evidence/Example, Explanation, and Link back to the question. For philosophy, the ‘evidence’ is typically a thinker’s theory or a conceptual example.

For source-based questions, always quote or refer directly to the source material before explaining and evaluating it. Never write a general essay that ignores the given text.

6. Using Philosophical Terminology |

Precision with terminology is a quick way to lift your KU score. Rather than writing ‘doing actions that benefit the most people’, use the standard term ‘the principle of utility’. Likewise, refer to ‘Hume’s fork’ when discussing relations of ideas and matters of fact, not just ‘Hume’s two types of knowledge’.

Be careful, however, not to use big words for their own sake without understanding them. Misusing a term like ‘epistemology’ when talking about metaphysics will undermine your credibility. Build a glossary of philosophical keywords and practise using them in sentences.

7. Source-Based Questions |

These questions present a short passage from a philosopher or a modern commentary. The primary skill tested is your ability to interpret the source and connect it to wider philosophical themes. Read the passage at least twice, identifying the conclusion and the reasons given.

Your answer should first demonstrate KU by summarising the argument accurately. Then move to AE by discussing whether the reasoning is sound, what assumptions are made, and how it links to other theories you have studied. Always integrate short quotations.

8. Essay Questions | 论述题

20-mark essay questions demand a balanced, well-argued response. The mark allocation is usually split evenly between KU and AE, so you must demonstrate depth of knowledge and sustained critical evaluation. Plan for at least 5 minutes before writing.

A typical top-level essay structure includes: an introduction that defines terms and sets out the essay’s direction; two or three detailed paragraphs each presenting a distinct argument or theme with evaluation woven in; and a conclusion that answers the question directly, e.g., ‘To a large extent, the ontological argument fails because…’

9. Time Management |

Running out of time is a common reason for underperforming. Always divide the available minutes according to the mark weighting. For a paper with 60 marks and 90 minutes, you have about 1.5 minutes per mark. A 10-mark question should take no more than 15 minutes.

Stick to your timings rigidly. If you are halfway through an 8-mark question and have used 12 minutes, move on and leave space to return later if possible. It is better to attempt all questions with partial answers than to leave a 20-point essay entirely blank.

10. Common Mistakes to Avoid |

One of the biggest mistakes is narrative storytelling instead of philosophical argument. Philosophy is not about recounting what happened to Socrates but about analysing his ideas. Avoid historical biography and stay focused on concepts.

Other common pitfalls include: not answering the question directly, using overly emotional language, presenting only one side of an evaluative question, confusing philosophers from different eras, and forgetting to define central terms. Proofread the last two minutes to catch any obvious errors.

11. Model Answer Breakdown |

Let’s examine a short example: ‘Explain Descartes’ cogito argument and evaluate one criticism.’ (4 KU, 4 AE).

A strong KU response: ‘Descartes, in his Meditations, used radical doubt to find a certain foundation for knowledge. He argued that even if an evil demon deceives him, he must exist to be deceived. Thus, ‘I think, therefore I am’ (cogito ergo sum) is an indubitable first truth, establishing his existence as a thinking thing.’

A high-scoring AE paragraph: ‘A famous criticism, raised by thinkers like Lichtenberg, is that Descartes does not prove the existence of an ‘I’ but merely the occurrence of thinking. The cogito may only show ‘thinking is happening’, not an enduring self. This weakness is significant because much of Descartes’ later argument rests on the nature of the self as a substance. However, Descartes could respond that the very act of doubting requires a doubter, so the ‘I’ is necessarily inferred. On balance, the cogito remains a brilliant starting point, but it does not entirely escape the problem of the self.’

Notice how the AE paragraph uses precise terminology, states a clear criticism, explains why it matters, offers a counter-response, and reaches a balanced conclusion. This pattern reliably earns full AE marks.
