1. The Component 1 Written Exam at a Glance |

The AQA GCSE Drama written paper (Component 1: Understanding Drama) lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes and is worth 80 marks, which is 40% of the total GCSE. It is divided into three sections. Section A contains four multiple‑choice questions on theatre roles and terminology (4 marks). Section B focuses on your set text; you will answer four questions on a printed extract, totalling 44 marks, where you may be asked to approach the scene as a performer, director or designer. Section C requires you to write one extended response evaluating a live theatre production you have seen, carrying 32 marks. Knowing this structure is the first step to managing your time and energy effectively on the day.

2. Assessment Objectives Made Clear |

Every mark you earn connects directly to one of the four assessment objectives AOs. AO1 tests your ability to create and develop ideas to communicate meaning for performance, which is mainly assessed through devising logs but also appears when you suggest directorial or design concepts. AO2 focuses on applying theatrical skills to realise artistic intentions in live performance; in the written paper this shows up when you describe how a performer, director or designer would use specific skills. AO3 requires you to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how drama and theatre is developed and performed. AO4 is about analysing and evaluating your own work and the work of others; it carries heavy weight in Section C and in the longer Section B questions. Always have these AOs in the back of your mind as you answer: they shape the mark scheme.

AO Focus
AO1 Create and develop ideas to communicate meaning
AO2 Apply theatrical skills to realise artistic intentions
AO3 Show knowledge of how drama and theatre is developed and performed
AO4 Analyse and evaluate own work and the work of others

3. Decoding Command Words |

In AQA Drama papers, every question begins with a command word that tells you exactly what type of thinking is required. ‘Identify’ or ‘state’ asks for a brief, factual answer, mainly in Section A. ‘Describe’ wants you to paint a clear picture of what you would do or what you saw; it is a ‘what’ question. ‘Explain’ pushes you to give reasons and to say how and why something will be done, linking choices to intended effects on the audience. ‘Analyse’ requires you to break down elements and explore how they work together, while ‘evaluate’ goes a step further by making supported judgments about success or impact. Start every paragraph by closely echoing the command word in your topic sentence to show the examiner you are on task.

4. Section A: Theatre Roles and Terminology | A 部分:剧场角色与术语

Section A is worth 4 marks through four multiple‑choice questions. Although it seems small, these marks are easy to secure if you know the key roles and basic stage terminology. Revise the responsibilities of a playwright, performer, director, designer (lighting, sound, set, costume), stage manager and theatre manager. Also be confident with terms such as thrust stage, proscenium arch, traverse, in‑the‑round, upstage, downstage, centre stage, and basic acting areas. Expect at least one question on the role of a specific designer or backstage position.

5. Common Pitfalls in Section A | A 部分常见陷阱

Students often lose marks by confusing a theatre manager with a stage manager, or by not knowing that the understudy is the person who takes over a role when the original actor cannot perform. Also watch out for questions that mix design skills: for example, a lighting designer is responsible for creating atmosphere and focus, not for sourcing props. Read each option carefully before choosing, as distractors can be subtle. A quick mental rehearsal of the role’s duties before ticking a box can prevent a careless mistake.

6. Section B: Three-Lens Thinking for the Set Text | B

In Section B you are given an extract from your set play and four questions. You will not answer as yourself; instead you must adopt the lens of a performer, a director, or a designer. This is called three-lens thinking. For a performer question, you discuss vocal and physical skills: tone, pitch, pace, pause, gesture, posture, facial expression, gait, levels and proxemics. As a director, you guide the performers and shape the total stage picture, discussing blocking, interaction and the creation of mood. As a designer, you select and justify set, costume, lighting, sound or props in detail, linking every choice to the extract’s moment, themes and intended impact. Practise switching lenses rapidly and always state your chosen role in the first sentence of your answer.

7. Using Quotations and Stage Directions |

High-level responses always root themselves in the extract. Quote key lines and stage directions to support your choices. For example, if a stage direction says ‘[He slams the door]’, use that as the trigger for a sudden sound effect or a sharp lighting change. When writing as a performer, show exactly which line you are emphasising and how your delivery shifts on that word. Short, embedded quotations are better than long, floating strings. Always follow a quotation with an explanation that links the textual detail to your theatrical decision and its effect.

8. Analysing Performance and Design Elements in Detail |

Avoid vague statements like ‘I would use facial expressions to show sadness’. Instead, explain precisely which muscles tense or relax, where the gaze falls, and how the expression shifts the audience’s empathy. For sound, refer to diegetic and non‑diegetic sound, volume, reverb, fade and timbre. For lighting, mention lantern types, colour gels, gobos, intensity, angles and transition speeds, always linking them to mood, locality and focus. For set, discuss levels, materials, exits, flown pieces and scale. Use technical vocabulary naturally and in context; the mark scheme rewards precise terminology that is applied to the extract, not just listed for display.

9. Section C: Building a Live Theatre Evaluation | C

Section C requires you to write a review-style response about a live production you have seen. You must name the play, the theatre company, the venue and the date of the performance. Plan your answer around two or three powerful moments that you remember vividly. For each moment, describe what you saw and heard, analyse how the performers, designers and director used their skills to create impact, and evaluate the success of that moment for the audience. Use the describe–analyse–evaluate chain faithfully. It is better to analyse two moments in depth than to skim over six. Keep your personal reaction to a minimum unless you are using it to support an evaluation.

10. The Describe–Analyse–Evaluate Ladder |

Think of your Section C response as climbing a ladder. The bottom rung is description: what exactly did you observe? Be specific about costume, lighting state, sound cue, proxemics. The middle rung is analysis: explain how two or more elements worked together to create a particular effect, using technical vocabulary and referring to the director’s apparent intention. The top rung is evaluation: make a supported judgment. Was the moment highly effective? Did it elicit a strong emotional or intellectual response? How successfully did it convey the intended meaning? Examiners award the highest marks for answers that reach this evaluative level and back their statements with evidence from the production.

11. Time Management in the Exam |

With 105 minutes and 80 marks, you can roughly allocate 1.3 minutes per mark. A sensible breakdown is: Section A – no more than 5 minutes; Section B – about 55 minutes, leaving enough time for the 8-mark, 10-mark and 20-mark questions; Section C – 40–45 minutes, including 5 minutes for planning. For the longer Section B question worth 20 marks, spend a few minutes annotating the extract and bullet-pointing your ideas before writing. Always leave 2–3 minutes at the end to check for missing details, illegible words and accidental omissions of the live theatre dates or names.

12. Final Checks That Lift Your Grade |

Before putting your pen down, quickly scan your paper with the mark scheme in mind. Have you used precise theatrical terminology in every section? In Section B, does every paragraph refer to the extract through quotation or close reference? Have you stated your role clearly in each answer? For Section C, is the venue and production date clearly written? Have you reached a justified evaluation rather than just describing? Small fixes like adding a missing stage direction quote, a designer’s justification, or an explicit evaluative sentence can make the difference between a grade boundary. A calm, focused final review turns a good script into an excellent one.
