📚 Year 10 AQA Geography: Answering Questions and Mark Schemes | Year 10 AQA

Success in AQA GCSE Geography does not depend only on knowing your case studies or being able to read a map. It hinges on your ability to interpret exam command words, structure your answers according to the mark scheme, and demonstrate the exact skills the examiner is looking for. This guide breaks down essential techniques for Year 10 students, covering every question type from ‘describe’ to ‘evaluate’, and shows you how to turn your knowledge into marks.

1. Understanding Command Words |

Command words are the verbs in a question that tell you exactly what to do. For AQA Geography, common ones include ‘describe’, ‘explain’, ‘compare’, ‘evaluate’ and ‘justify’. Misreading a command word is one of the most frequent reasons students lose marks. ‘Describe’ only requires you to say what you see or what happens — no reasons. ‘Explain’ demands reasons or causes. ‘Evaluate’ asks you to weigh up strengths and weaknesses and come to a judgement. Always circle or underline the command word before you start writing, and check that every sentence you produce addresses it directly.

Alongside command words, pay attention to the number of marks and any linked phrases such as ‘using Figure 2’ or ‘with reference to a case study’. These are not optional extras; they are explicit requirements. If a 4-mark question asks you to use a photograph, you must name features visible in the photograph and may lose marks for generic textbook descriptions.

2. Deconstructing the Mark Scheme |

AQA Geography mark schemes are built around Assessment Objectives (AOs). AO1 tests knowledge of places, processes and terminology. AO2 checks how well you can apply that knowledge to unfamiliar contexts, such as interpreting a new map or graph. AO3 assesses your ability to analyse, evaluate and make judgements. Each question targets a specific mix of these AOs, and the mark scheme reveals the balance. For example, a 6-mark ‘discuss’ question might allocate 2 marks for AO1 knowledge, 2 for AO2 application and 2 for AO3 evaluation.

You can use this structure to shape your answer. If a question is heavy on AO2, your priority is to link knowledge directly to the provided resource. If AO3 is dominant, you must include a balanced argument and a supported conclusion. Practise with past paper mark schemes and highlight which AO is being tested in each sub-question. Soon you will instinctively match your response to the examiner’s checklist.

3. Mastering ‘Describe’ Questions |

‘Describe’ questions often appear in the first few parts of a question, set at 1–4 marks. They require no explanation, just accurate observations. If you are asked to describe a distribution from a map, use compass directions, name regions and refer to patterns such as ‘linear’, ‘clustered’ or ‘dispersed’. Avoid vague statements like ‘it is uneven’; specify that ‘the highest density is along the coastal fringe northeast of the river mouth, while the interior remains sparsely populated’.

When describing a graph or table, state the general trend, quote data and identify any anomalies. Use the acronym TEA: Trend, Evidence, Anomaly. For a graph showing global temperature change, you might write: ‘There is a clear upward trend from 1880 to the present (Trend). The mean global temperature has risen by approximately 1.2 °C, with the steepest rise occurring after 1980 (Evidence). However, the period 1940–1970 shows a slight plateau (Anomaly).’

4. Tackling ‘Explain’ Questions |

Once you see the command word ‘explain’, the examiner is looking for causes, processes and connections. Your answer must move beyond what is happening to why it is happening. Use linking words like ‘because’, ‘this leads to’ and ‘as a result’. A 4-mark ‘explain’ question on the formation of a waterfall might require you to sequence erosion processes: ‘Hard rock overlies softer rock; the softer rock is eroded more quickly by hydraulic action and abrasion, creating an overhang. Eventually the overhang collapses under gravity, and a plunge pool is formed at the base.’

Always connect physical processes to the landform or pattern in the question. If you have a case study that illustrates the process, name it but do not just describe the case — use it to demonstrate the process. For example, when explaining how coastal erosion creates headlands and bays, you could refer to the Swanage coastline, showing how alternating bands of hard limestone and soft clay produce differential erosion.

5. Excelling at ‘Evaluate’ Questions |

‘Evaluate’ questions usually carry 6 or 9 marks and require a critical discussion. You must present both sides of an argument before reaching a justified conclusion. Start by identifying obvious advantages and disadvantages of the strategy or management approach in the question. For each point, add depth by considering scale, timeframe, cost and stakeholder views. In a 9-mark question about whether hard engineering is the best way to manage coastal erosion, you could contrast the immediate protection offered by a sea wall with its long-term expense and negative impact down-drift, using the Holderness coast as evidence.

Your conclusion must directly answer the question. Avoid sitting on the fence with ‘it depends’ unless you specify what it depends on. Instead, write: ‘Overall, hard engineering is only a partial solution. While a sea wall provides short-term protection for high-value urban areas, its high maintenance cost and tendency to increase erosion elsewhere mean that soft engineering such as beach nourishment, combined with managed retreat in less valuable zones, is often more sustainable in the long term.’

6. Using Case Studies Effectively |

The AQA specification requires you to learn a number of specific case studies and examples. An ‘example’ is a smaller-scale illustration you can use to support a point, whereas a ‘case study’ demands detailed knowledge of place, process, people and consequences. When a question says ‘with reference to a case study’, failure to name one will cap your marks. Name the case study in the first sentence: ‘The magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010 is a clear example of a tectonic hazard in a low-income country.’

For each case study you revise, create a fact file covering: location, key dates, causes, primary and secondary effects, immediate and long-term responses, and one or two well-rehearsed statistics. But avoid simply dumping facts. For every fact you give, add a short explanation of how it links to the question. Instead of ‘The 2011 Japanese earthquake triggered a tsunami over 10 metres high,’ write ‘The 2011 Japanese earthquake generated a tsunami exceeding 10 metres in height, which overwhelmed coastal defences and caused the Fukushima nuclear meltdown, illustrating how secondary effects in a high-income country can cascade into technological disaster.’

7. Interpreting Graphs and Maps |

Graphs, photographs and Ordnance Survey (OS) maps feature heavily in AQA exams. For graph questions, read the title and axis labels before looking at the data. Note whether the axes start at zero — this can be deliberately misleading. When interpreting photographs, use evidence from the image, not prior knowledge. Phrases like ‘in the foreground I can see…’ or ‘the land-use map indicates…’ signal to the examiner that you are using the resource.

OS map skills remain a core component. Practise using grid references, measuring straight and curved distances using the scale bar, interpreting contour lines, and identifying features from symbols. When describing relief, refer to the contour patterns: closely spaced contours indicate steep slopes; widely spaced contours show gentle terrain. Always quote a grid reference or place name to anchor your observation geographically.

8. Time Management in Exams |

AQA GCSE Geography Paper 1 (Living with the Physical Environment) lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and carries 88 marks, giving you roughly one minute per mark plus some reading time. A common pitfall is spending too long on early, lower-mark questions and then rushing the high-tariff 9-mark question at the end. As a rule of thumb, for a 2-mark ‘describe’ question, spend no more than 2–3 minutes; for a 6-mark ‘discuss’ question, allow 7–8 minutes; and for a 9-mark ‘evaluate’ question, allocate 10–12 minutes.

When you first open the paper, use the first two minutes to scan all questions and identify which case studies you will need. Begin with the questions you feel most confident about to build momentum, but keep an eye on the clock. If you find yourself stuck on a question, leave a gap and move on; the mark scheme rewards concise, well-structured answers, not perfect prose.

9. Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them | 常见陷阱及其避免方法

One of the most frequent errors is ignoring the resource material. A question that includes a figure, map or table always expects you to use it explicitly. If you write a perfect theoretical answer without mentioning ‘as shown in Figure 3’, you will lose marks heavily in AO2. Practise weaving resource evidence into every sentence: ‘The photograph shows low-lying agricultural land that is already waterlogged, suggesting that a further rise in sea level would render it unusable.’

Another pitfall is writing everything you know about a topic rather than answering the specific question. It is tempting to tell the examiner all about the causes of flooding, but if the question only asks about the human factors that increase flood risk, stick to that. Use the BUG technique: Box the command word, Underline the key terms, and Glance back at the question every couple of minutes to check you are still on track.

Finally, do not neglect key terminology. The specification explicitly lists core terms such as ‘abrasion’, ‘hydraulic action’, ‘levees’, ‘urbanisation’, ‘sustainable management’ and many more. Using these terms accurately and in context signals strong AO1 knowledge. Where possible, define the term briefly in your answer: ‘Longshore drift, the zigzag movement of sediment along the coast, is responsible for…’

10. Structuring 6- and 9-Mark Answers |

Extended-writing questions are the single biggest differentiator between grade boundaries. For a 6-mark question, aim for two well-developed paragraphs. Structure each using PEEL: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. For example: ‘One social impact of the Christchurch earthquake was severe housing loss (Point). Over 10 000 homes were damaged, and many people were forced into temporary shelters for months (Evidence). This caused psychological stress and disrupted community networks, as families were separated and children missed school (Explanation). Such social disruption often persists long after the physical rebuilding is complete, as seen in Christchurch (Link).’

For 9-mark questions, use three paragraphs and a conclusion. The first paragraph can outline the argument in favour of the view in the question, the second presents counterarguments, and the third adds synoptic links or a deeper analysis before you deliver a clear, evidence-based conclusion. The conclusion should not repeat earlier points but synthesise them. Use the final sentence to answer the question directly: ‘Therefore, I agree to a large extent that… because…, although…’

Plan your extended answers briefly in the margin before you start. A 30-second plan listing the key points and the order you will make them prevents your answer from becoming repetitive or unbalanced. Examiners often report that the weakest 9-mark answers are those that lack a conclusion or simply list points without linking them together.
