1. Understanding the AQA History Assessment Objectives | 理解 AQA 历史的评价目标

AQA History marks your answers against three Assessment Objectives: AO1 tests your knowledge and understanding of the period, people and events; AO2 assesses how well you can explain and analyse historical developments using second-order concepts such as causation, consequence, change, continuity, similarity, difference and significance; AO3 focuses on your ability to analyse and evaluate sources or interpretations and make substantiated judgements. Each question on the exam paper weights these objectives differently, so you must always read the question wording to know what is being targeted.

For example, a ‘describe’ question relies heavily on AO1, while an ‘explain why’ question demands more AO2. Source-based questions mix AO2 and AO3, expecting you to use your own knowledge to support evaluation. Always highlight the command word – ‘describe’, ‘explain’, ‘evaluate’, ‘how far’ – and plan your approach accordingly.

2. Decoding Command Words |

Command words tell you exactly what the examiner wants. ‘Describe’ asks you to give a detailed account of what happened, not why. ‘Explain’ requires you to give reasons, analyse causes or consequences, and show how factors link together. ‘How far do you agree?’ or ‘To what extent…’ demands a judgement that weighs evidence on both sides before arriving at a balanced conclusion. ‘Evaluate’ for sources means you must judge usefulness, reliability or value, considering provenance and historical context.

“How far do you agree?”或“To what extent…”

One common mistake Year 10 students make is to turn an ‘explain’ question into a story. Instead of describing a sequence of events, you need to peel back layers: what caused the event? What were the long-term and short-term causes? What were the intended and unintended consequences? Keep returning to the command word to stay on track.

3. Understanding Mark Schemes and Level Descriptors |

AQA uses levels-based mark schemes for most questions. Typically there are four levels, each describing the quality of an answer. Level 1 answers show simple knowledge or statements; Level 2 demonstrates developed knowledge with some explanation; Level 3 brings in analysis and begins to make links; Level 4 is sustained analysis with a clear, substantiated judgement. To move up the levels, you need to shift from telling a story to constructing an argument.

For source questions, the levels look at how well you combine source content with own knowledge and how you evaluate provenance. A Level 4 source evaluation will not just say ‘it is useful because it is a primary source’ but will explain how the nature, origin or purpose of the source affects its reliability for that specific enquiry, and will cross-reference with other sources or contextual knowledge.

4. Time Management Inside the Exam |

Every minute counts. Calculate how many marks per minute you have by dividing total marks by exam duration. For instance, if a paper has 50 marks and lasts 60 minutes, you have just over one minute per mark. A 12-mark question deserves around 14–15 minutes. Stick to these limits, leaving a few minutes at the end to check your work. Never spend so long on an early question that you leave a high-mark question unfinished.

When you start a question, jot down three or four key points you want to include. This prevents you from going off-topic and saves time mid-writing. For long essay questions, spend two to three minutes planning – outline your argument, decide on the order of paragraphs and note which pieces of specific evidence you will use. A plan is your map; without it, you risk a rambling answer that lacks focus.

5. How to Structure a PEEL Paragraph | 如何构建 PEEL 段落

PEEL (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) is the most effective paragraph model for AQA History. Start with a clear Point that answers the question directly. Follow with specific Evidence – names, dates, statistics, events. Then Explain how your evidence proves the point, using concepts like causation or consequence. Finally, Link back to the main argument or forward to the next paragraph. This structure ensures every sentence earns marks.

PEEL(Point,Evidence,Explanation,Link)是 AQA 历史考试最有效的段落模型。

A weak example for an ‘explain why tensions increased’ paragraph: ‘There were many events. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand happened. This caused war.’ A strong PEEL example: ‘One key reason tensions increased was the alliance system (Point). For instance, the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy) and the Triple Entente (Britain, France, Russia) divided Europe into armed camps (Evidence). This made a small crisis likely to escalate because each side promised to support its allies, turning a two-country dispute into a continental war (Explanation). Therefore, rather than preventing conflict, the alliance system deepened it (Link).’ Always push your explanation further than the obvious.

6. Using Specific, Relevant Historical Knowledge |

A good answer is specific, not vague. Instead of writing ‘many people were unhappy,’ state ‘there was widespread discontent among the Third Estate due to the burden of taxation and the feudal privileges of the First and Second Estates.’ Instead of ‘technology improved,’ name the invention and its inventor: ‘the water frame, invented by Richard Arkwright in 1769, revolutionised cotton spinning.’ Specific factual details provide the concrete support your argument needs to reach Level 3 and Level 4.

However, relevance is vital. Every fact must serve your argument. Dropping random facts that do not answer the question will not move you up the mark scheme. For each piece of evidence you plan to use, ask yourself: ‘How does this help me answer the question?’ If you can clearly articulate the link, include it. If not, leave it out.

7. Source Analysis: Provenance, Usefulness and Reliability |

When working with sources, remember the acronym NOP: Nature, Origin, Purpose. Nature asks what type of source it is – diary, speech, photograph, cartoon. A private diary may be more emotionally honest, while a public speech is designed to persuade. Origin asks who wrote it, when and where. A German soldier’s account of the Somme will differ from a British general’s report. Purpose asks why it was produced. A propaganda poster aims to boost morale, not to give a balanced truth.

To evaluate usefulness, consider both what the source can tell you and what it cannot. Even a biased source is useful – it reveals the attitudes and motives of the time. Always compare the source content with your own contextual knowledge to test its accuracy. A high-level answer will say: ‘This source is useful for showing the attitude of X, but limited because it does not reflect Y, and this is supported by the fact that…’

8. Tackling ‘How Far Do You Agree?’ and ‘To What Extent’ Questions |

These questions expect a balanced argument that weighs evidence on both sides before reaching a substantiated judgement. A common error is to agree or disagree entirely without acknowledging counter-arguments, which limits the response to Level 2. Aim to structure your essay with an introduction that sets out the line of reasoning, a series of paragraphs that explore both sides, and a conclusion that clearly states ‘how far’ and why.

For example, ‘How far do you agree that the Treaty of Versailles was the main cause of the Second World War?’ You would discuss how the treaty created resentment in Germany, destabilised the economy and fuelled extremism (agree side), but then consider other factors such as the failure of the League of Nations, the policy of appeasement, the rise of Hitler and the worldwide Depression (disagree side). Your conclusion might state: ‘While the Treaty of Versailles created the conditions for resentment, it was the combination of economic crisis and Hitler’s aggressive expansionism that actually triggered war, so the treaty was a significant long-term factor but not the sole cause.’

9. Handling Interpretation Questions |

Some AQA topics require you to evaluate historical interpretations – different viewpoints on a person or event. You might be asked ‘Which interpretation do you find more convincing about…?’ Start by summarising what each interpretation argues and how they differ. Then test each interpretation against your own knowledge. Evaluate not just what is said, but the evidence the historian uses and the balance of their argument. The best answers explain why the interpretations differ, linking to the historians’ perspectives or the context in which they were written.

For instance, on the Cold War, Interpretation A might argue that the USA was primarily responsible for starting the Cold War, focusing on the Marshall Plan and the atomic bomb. Interpretation B might blame the USSR, highlighting the imposition of communist regimes in Eastern Europe. Your answer would examine the strengths and weaknesses of each view using specific events like the Truman Doctrine or the Berlin Blockade, ultimately concluding which interpretation you find more convincing and why, perhaps arguing that both powers bear shared responsibility.

10. Making Substantiated Judgements and Conclusions |

A single sentence at the end of a paragraph is not enough. To reach the higher levels, you must weave evaluation throughout your answer and top it off with a conclusion that directly addresses the question. A strong conclusion does not merely repeat points; it weighs the relative importance of factors, explains how they interrelate, and delivers a final, reasoned verdict. Phrases like ‘Overall, the most significant reason was…’, ‘While X played a part, the key factor was…’, and ‘Therefore, I agree to a large extent, but…’ help frame this judgement.

To move from Level 3 to Level 4, your answer needs a clear sense of priorities. For a causation question, identify the trigger cause, the underlying causes and the short- and long-term factors. Discuss which was more important and why. A Level 4 answer will not list factors equally but will create a hierarchy of causes, constantly signposting why one outweighed another. This demonstrates the ‘sustained analysis’ that mark schemes demand.

11. Using Second-Order Concepts to Shape Arguments |

Examiners want to see that you think like a historian. That means handling concepts such as change and continuity, similarity and difference, and significance with confidence. When you write about change, don’t just state that things changed; explore the pace, nature and extent of change. Was it rapid or gradual? Total or limited? For whom did things change, and for whom did they stay the same? When discussing significance, go beyond vague statements – explain ‘significant for what, for whom, and compared to what?’

For example, if studying the Industrial Revolution, a simple statement would be: ‘Cities grew rapidly.’ A concept-driven answer would say: ‘The rate of urbanisation between 1750 and 1850 was unprecedented; towns like Manchester grew from villages into industrial centres in two generations. However, continuity persisted in the countryside, where agricultural work and rural traditions remained largely unchanged until the Enclosure Acts accelerated change.’ This nuanced thinking moves you up the levels.

12. Refining Exam Technique Through Practice |

Reading about technique is only the first step. You must apply it regularly under timed conditions. Start by attempting individual questions with the mark scheme open, then gradually close the mark scheme and simulate full timed papers. After each attempt, mark your own work against the level descriptors, identifying exactly where you dropped marks. Was it lack of knowledge, weak explanation, or missing evaluation? Keep a log of these weaknesses and work on them methodically.

Active revision also means using past papers from the AQA website to familiarise yourself with question styles and mark schemes. Pair up with a study partner and assess each other’s paragraphs against the PEEL criteria. Teach a topic to someone else – the best test of your understanding is whether you can explain it clearly. Seek feedback from your teacher on specific paragraphs, not just whole essays, to fine-tune your writing at the sentence level.

Finally, maintain a revision timetable that builds in regular exam practice. The more you write under pressure, the more automatic good structure and analysis become. Remember that every mark is a step towards the grade you want, and disciplined practice is the surest way to get there.
