1. The PEEL Paragraph Formula | PEEL 段落公式

PEEL is the most essential writing structure for analytical paragraphs. The acronym stands for Point (a clear topic sentence), Evidence (a well‑chosen quotation or example), Explanation (detailed analysis of how the evidence proves your point) and Link (a sentence that ties back to the question or leads into the next idea). Always sequence them in this exact order.

PEEL 是分析性段落最核心的写作结构。该缩写代表观点(清晰的主题句)、证据(精心挑选的引文或例子)、解释(详细分析证据如何证明观点)和衔接(回扣问题或引出下一个观点的句子)。务必严格按照这个顺序布局。

Point + Evidence + Explanation + Link = PEEL

For example, in a character analysis of Lennie from Of Mice and Men: Point – “Steinbeck presents Lennie as physically powerful yet emotionally vulnerable.” Evidence – ” ‘He’s so strong he can pick up a horse,’ says George.” Explanation – “The hyperbole emphasises Lennie’s brute strength, but the fact that George feels the need to warn others reveals Lennie’s inability to control it, evoking sympathy.” Link – “This dangerous combination inevitably foreshadows the tragic ending.”

例如分析《人鼠之间》中 Lennie 的人物形象:观点——“斯坦贝克将 Lennie 刻画为体魄强壮、情感脆弱的人物。”证据——“乔治说:‘他那么大力气,能举起一匹马。’”解释——“夸张手法突出了 Lennie 的蛮力,但乔治觉得必须提醒他人,这恰恰暴露了 Lennie 无法控制自己的力气,从而引发读者的同情。”衔接——“这种危险的组合不可避免地预示了悲剧结局。”

2. The Narrative Arc Formula | 叙事弧线公式

Every compelling story follows a predictable pattern known as Freytag’s Pyramid. The five stages are: Exposition (setting and characters introduced), Rising Action (conflict builds), Climax (the turning point of maximum tension), Falling Action (consequences unfold) and Resolution (the story ends). Memorise this as a five‑part timeline to structure your own narratives or analyse unseen prose.

任何引人入胜的故事都遵循一个可预见的模式,即弗赖塔格金字塔。五个阶段依次为:开端(介绍背景与人物)、发展(冲突层层推进)、高潮(张力达到顶点的转折处)、回落(后果逐步呈现)和结局(故事收束)。把这一五段式时间轴记牢,用以构筑你自己的记叙文或分析试卷中的陌生散文。

  • Exposition – Who? Where? When? | 开端 – 何人?何地?何时?
  • Rising Action – What problems arise? | 发展 – 出现了什么问题?
  • Climax – The most exciting or decisive moment. | 高潮 – 最扣人心弦或最具决定性的瞬间。
  • Falling Action – Immediate results of the climax. | 回落 – 高潮带来的直接后果。
  • Resolution – Loose ends tied up. | 结局 – 收束所有情节线索。

When planning a narrative, simply sketch this pyramid and assign two or three key events to each stage. It stops your story from wandering and ensures a satisfying shape.

构思记叙文时,只需画出这个金字塔,并在每个阶段下方填入两三个关键事件。它能使你的故事不跑题并拥有令人满意的完整结构。

3. The Five‑Paragraph Essay Structure | 五段式论文结构

For argumentative and discursive essays, the five‑paragraph model is a reliable blueprint. It consists of: an Introduction (hook, background, thesis statement), three Body Paragraphs (each one argument with evidence) and a Conclusion (restate thesis, summarise, strong closing thought). While you may use more than three body paragraphs, this skeleton keeps your argument rigorous and balanced.

对于议论文和辨证文,五段式模型是可靠的蓝图。它包括:一个引言(引子、背景、主题句)、三个主体段落(每段一个论点并搭配证据)和一个结论(重申主题、总结观点、有力的结束语)。尽管你可以使用超过三个主体段,但这个骨架能确保你的论证严谨而均衡。

Introduction Hook → Context → Thesis statement
Body 1 Topic sentence → Evidence → Analysis → Link
Body 2 Counter‑argument or second reason → Evidence → Analysis → Link
Body 3 Strongest argument → Evidence → Analysis → Link
Conclusion Synthesis → Wider significance → Memorable closing line

Practise colour‑coding your draft: blue for topic sentences, green for evidence, orange for analysis. This visual reinforcement trains your brain to write structured paragraphs automatically.

练习用不同颜色标注草稿:主题句用蓝色,证据用绿色,分析用橙色。这种视觉强化能让你的大脑自动写出结构清晰的段落。

4. The TRI Persuasive Formula | TRI 说服公式

Persuasive writing becomes much easier when you break it down into Topic, Reason and Impact. First, state the topic or claim clearly. Second, give a compelling reason why the reader should agree. Third, explain the impact – how will things change if your view is adopted or ignored? This direct chain of logic works in speeches, articles and letters.

把说服性写作拆解为话题理由影响三个部分,写作就会变得容易许多。首先,清晰陈述话题或主张;其次,给出一个让读者信服的理由;最后,说明影响——如果采纳或忽略了你的观点,事情将如何变化?这条直截了当的逻辑链条适用于演讲稿、文章和信件。

Topic + Reason + Impact = Persuasive Power

Example: Topic – “School uniforms should be abolished.” Reason – “They suppress individuality and cost parents an unnecessary 200 pounds per year.” Impact – “Without uniforms, students will express themselves more freely and families can redirect that money to educational resources.” Notice how the impact looks ahead to a better future.

例子:话题——“校服应该废除。”理由——“校服压制个性,并且每年让家长多花不必要的200英镑。”影响——“废除校服后,学生能更自由地表达自我,家庭也可以把这笔钱转用于教育资源。”请注意,影响部分展望了更美好的未来。

5. The What‑How‑Why Analysis Model | What‑How‑Why 分析模型

To move from description to genuine analysis, always answer three questions: What has the writer done? (identify the technique) How have they done it? (quote the word or phrase) Why have they chosen this particular method? (link to effect on the reader and the writer’s purpose). This triple‑lock system forces you to dig beneath the surface.

要想从描述上升到真正的分析,永远要回答三个问题:作者用了什么手法?(识别技巧)作者如何做到的?(引用词或短语)作者为什么选择这种特定方法?(关联给读者带来的效果以及作者的写作目的)。这套三重锁定体系能逼着你向文本深处挖掘。

What – “The author uses personification.” | 什么——“作者使用了拟人手法。”
How – ” ‘The angry storm devoured the coastline.’ ” | 如何——“‘愤怒的暴风雨吞噬了海岸线。’”
Why – “This creates a menacing tone and suggests nature is an uncontrollable force, perhaps warning readers about climate change.” | 为什么——“这营造出一种险恶的氛围,暗示大自然是一股无法控制的力量,或许是在警示读者注意气候变化。”

6. The SOAPSTone Text Analysis Framework | SOAPSTone 文本分析法

SOAPSTone is a mnemonic that helps you decode any non‑fiction text quickly. Analyse the Speaker, Occasion, Audience, Purpose, Subject and Tone. By completing these six slots, you will grasp the rhetorical situation at a glance and be ready to discuss how language choices serve the writer’s aim.

SOAPSTone 是一个记忆口诀,能帮你快速解码任何非虚构文本。分析文本的说话者场合受众目的主题语气。填满这六个格子的那一刻,你就能一眼把握修辞情境,并准备好讨论语言选择如何服务于作者的意图。

  • Speaker – Who is the voice behind the text? | 说话者——文本背后的声音是谁?
  • Occasion – What prompted this piece? | 场合——是什么事件催生了这篇作品?
  • Audience – Who is the intended reader? | 受众——预设的读者是谁?
  • Purpose – To persuade, inform, entertain? | 目的——说服、告知还是娱乐?
  • Subject – What is the literal topic? | 主题——字面上的话题是什么?
  • Tone – What is the writer’s attitude? | 语气——作者的态度是怎样的?

For instance, a newspaper editorial about plastic pollution: Speaker = a concerned environmental journalist; Occasion = a new scientific report; Audience = general public; Purpose = to urge action; Subject = single‑use plastics; Tone = urgent and accusatory. Use this skeleton to write a punchy introduction.

例如,一篇关于塑料污染的报纸社论:说话者 = 一位忧心忡忡的环境记者;场合 = 一份新的科学报告;受众 = 普通公众;目的 = 敦促行动;主题 = 一次性塑料;语气 = 急迫且带有谴责意味。用这个框架写一段有力的引言吧。

7. The Sentence Types Formula | 句子类型公式

Varying sentence structures is not a mystery – it is a formula. There are three basic building blocks: simple sentences (one independent clause), compound sentences (two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction) and complex sentences (one independent clause plus at least one dependent clause). Learn to mix them deliberately to control pace and emphasis.

变换句子结构并非玄学——它是一套公式。共有三种基本构件:简单句(一个独立分句)、并列句(用并列连词连接的两个独立分句)和复合句(一个独立分句加上至少一个从属分句)。学会有意识地混合使用它们,以掌控节奏和重点。

Simple = 1 Independent Clause
Compound = 2 Independent Clauses + Coordinating Conjunction
Complex = 1 Independent Clause + ≥1 Dependent Clause

Simple sentence: “The sun set.” (creates abrupt finality) | 简单句:“太阳落山了。”(制造戛然而止的效果)
Compound sentence: “The sun set, but the heat lingered.” (contrast) | 并列句:“太阳落山了,但暑气未消。”(对比)
Complex sentence: “Although the sun set, the heat lingered.” (emphasis on the lingering heat) | 复合句:“虽然太阳落山了,暑气仍未消散。”(强调暑气未消)

In exam conditions, aim for a ratio of roughly 30% simple, 30% compound and 40% complex sentences. This gives your writing a mature, rhythmic flow without becoming monotonous.

在考试中,努力将简单句、并列句、复合句的比例控制在约 3:3:4。这能使你的文章呈现出成熟、富有节奏感的流动感,不至于单调乏味。

8. Punctuation Rules as Formulas | 标点符号规则公式

Punctuation can be precision‑engineered with simple rules. Think of the semicolon formula: two related independent clauses; no conjunction. The colon formula: complete clause : explanation or list. The dash formula: dramatic interruption – or afterthought. Knowing these patterns helps you avoid comma splices and fragments under pressure.

标点符号可以用简单规则精密操控。分号公式:两个相关的独立分句;不能使用连词。冒号公式:完整分句 :解释或列举。破折号公式:突然打断 —— 或补充说明。掌握这些模式,能让你在紧张状态下避开逗号粘连和不完整句。

Punctuation Formula Example
Semicolon IC ; IC (closely related) She loves swimming; he prefers running.
Colon IC : explanation / list She had one goal: to win.
Dash IC — interruption / afterthought I was ready — or so I thought.

In dialogue, remember the ‘comma‑quote’ rule: “She said,” the author notes, “that the journey was long.” Direct speech always hangs its punctuation inside the quotation marks in British English usage tested by CAIE.

在对话中,牢记“逗号引号”规则:“她说,”作者写道,“这段旅程很漫长。”根据 CAIE 考查的英式英语用法,直接引语的标点永远放在引号之内。

9. The IDEAL Reading Comprehension Strategy | IDEAL 阅读理解策略

When tackling an unseen text, use the IDEAL sequence to maximise marks: Identify key words in the question; Detect relevant evidence in the passage by scanning; Extract the most precise quote or phrase; Analyse language and structure with a W‑H‑W (What‑How‑Why) approach; Link back to the question’s focus. Follow this order and you will never wander off‑topic.

处理陌生文本时,使用 IDEAL 流程以获取最高分:识别题目中的关键词;通过跳读在文中侦测相关证据;摘取最精准的引文或短语;用 What‑How‑Why 手法分析语言与结构;最后联系回题目的核心。遵循这一顺序,你就永远不会偏题。

Identify → Detect → Extract → Analyse → Link

Example for a question on tone: Identify – ‘tone of despair’. Detect – find words like ‘hollow’, ‘whisper’, ‘ash’. Extract – ‘a hollow whisper among the ashes’. Analyse – The hollow sound suggests emptiness and loss; ‘ashes’ implies destruction. Link – Therefore, the tone is indeed one of despair. In this way, every answer becomes a miniature essay.

以分析语气的问题为例:识别——“绝望的语气”。侦测——找到 ‘hollow’、’whisper’、’ash’ 等词。摘取——“灰烬中一声空洞的低语”。分析——“空洞”暗示空虚与失落;“灰烬”意味着毁灭。联系——因此,语气确实是绝望的。这样一来,每一道题的回答都成了一篇微型短文。

10. The ‘Show, Don’t Tell’ Technique | ‘展示而非告知’技法

‘Show, don’t tell’ is the number one creative writing theorem. Instead of telling the reader an emotion, show it through sensory details and actions. Formula: replace every adjective with a concrete image. Instead of “She was sad,” write “She traced the rim of her cold coffee cup, her eyes fixed on a stain she couldn’t wipe away.” This invites readers to infer the emotion themselves.

“展示而非告知”是创意写作的第一定理。不要直接告诉读者某种情绪,而是通过感官细节和动作把它展示出来。公式:把每一个形容词换成一个具体的画面。不要写“她很悲伤”,而是写“她用指尖轻划着凉透的咖啡杯杯沿,目光死死盯着一个怎么也擦不掉的污渍。”这能邀请读者自己去推断情绪。

Tell Show
He was nervous. His knee bounced beneath the desk, and he chewed his pen until the plastic cracked.
The room was messy. Pizza boxes formed a leaning tower, and a lone sock draped over the lampshade cast a woolly shadow.
The forest was frightening. Twigs snapped behind her, and the deeper she stepped, the more the trees seemed to swallow the moonlight.

Combine showing with the five senses: sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. A single sensory ‘formula’ can improve your descriptive writing by two bands. Practise rewriting every ‘telling’ sentence from your draft as a ‘showing’ paragraph until it becomes instinctive.

把展示与五感结合起来:视觉、听觉、嗅觉、触觉和味觉。仅凭一个感官“公式”就能让你的描述性写作提升两个评分档。坚持练习,把草稿中每一个“告知”式句子改写成“展示”式段落,直到成为本能。
