📚 Year 10 CCEA Media: Quick Vocabulary & Terminology Memorisation Guide | Year 10 CCEA

Media Studies is a subject that demands precise use of terminology. Whether you are analysing a film sequence, deconstructing a magazine cover, or evaluating a news broadcast, the right words unlock higher marks. This guide is designed to help Year 10 CCEA students memorise over 30 essential media terms quickly and effectively. Each section groups related vocabulary and provides simple memory hooks so that the concepts stick.

1. Camera Shots & Angles |

Establishing Shot (ES): A wide, often distant shot used at the start of a scene to show the audience where the action is taking place. Think of it as ‘establishing the geography’ — like opening a map.

Close-up (CU): A shot that tightly frames a character’s face or an object, filling most of the screen to reveal emotion or detail. Memory trick: you are ‘closing in’ on someone’s feelings.

Extreme Close-up (ECU): An even tighter shot, focusing on a single feature like an eye, a twitching lip or a key object. It magnifies significance — imagine using a magnifying glass on a clue.

High Angle: The camera looks down on the subject, making them appear small, vulnerable or weak. Picturing a bird staring down from a lamp post helps you remember this power dynamic.

Low Angle: The camera looks up at the subject, giving them an impression of power, dominance or threat. Think of a child looking up at an intimidating adult — the towering effect is the low angle.

2. Camera Movement |

Pan: The camera head swivels horizontally from a fixed position, left or right, often used to follow action or scan a landscape. Memory: think of a ‘panorama’ sweeping across.

Tilt: The camera head moves vertically up or down on a fixed axis, revealing height or depth. Imagine nodding your head to look up at a skyscraper — that motion is a tilt.

Tracking Shot (Dolly Shot): The entire camera moves along a track, following a subject smoothly through space. A supermarket trolley rolling beside you is a perfect visual metaphor.

Zoom: The lens adjusts to make the subject appear closer or further away without moving the camera body. Zoom in to isolate, zoom out to reveal context — think of it as a telescope for the audience.

3. Editing Techniques |

Cut: The most basic edit, instantly moving from one shot to another. It mimics how we blink and switch attention. If editing were punctuation, the cut would be a full stop.

Fade In / Fade Out: A transition where the image gradually emerges from black (fade in) or disappears into black (fade out), often signalling beginning or ending. Picture a theatre curtain slowly opening or closing.

Dissolve: One shot gradually blends into another, momentarily overlapping. It suggests a connection or passage of time. Think of memories dissolving into one another.

Montage: A sequence of shots edited together to condense time, build emotion or convey a theme. The famous training sequence in Rocky is a montage — crushing many days into seconds.

4. Sound Terminology |

Diegetic Sound: Any sound that exists within the story world — characters can hear it. Dialogue, footsteps, a ringing phone are all diegetic. Memory: ‘diegetic’ shares the same root as ‘story’ (diegesis).

Non-diegetic Sound: Sound that only the audience hears, not the characters. Voiceovers, background music and sound effects added in post-production are non-diegetic. Imagine a narrator speaking directly to you, invisible to the film’s characters.

Sound Bridge: A piece of audio that connects two scenes, either by starting before the image changes or continuing after. It ‘bridges’ the gap. Think of an actual bridge carrying sound waves from one island of action to another.

Ambient Sound (Atmosphere): Background noise that sets the scene — birdsong, traffic hum, office chatter. It creates realism and texture. Remember that ‘ambiente’ means surrounding environment.

5. Mise-en-Scène |

Mise-en-Scène: A French term meaning ‘placed in the scene’. It covers everything visible on screen: setting, props, costume, lighting, actors and their positioning. Visualise the director asking, ‘What am I putting in the scene?’

High-key Lighting: Bright, even illumination with minimal shadows, often used in comedies and advertisements to create a cheerful, aspirational mood. Think of a toothpaste commercial — everything is shiny and optimistic.

Low-key Lighting: A dramatic lighting style with deep shadows and high contrast between light and dark. It evokes mystery, fear or suspense. Film noir detectives lurking in half-lit alleys illustrate this perfectly.

Costume & Props: What characters wear and handle reveals their personality, status or era. A crown implies royalty; a smartphone implies contemporary setting. Always ask: ‘What story does this object tell?’

6. Semiotics: Denotation & Connotation |

Denotation: The literal, surface-level meaning of a sign — what you actually see or hear. A red rose denotes a flower with petals and thorns. It is the ‘dictionary definition’ of an image.

Connotation: The deeper, cultural or emotional associations a sign carries. A red rose connotes love, passion or romance. Denotation is what is shown; connotation is what is suggested.

Signifier & Signified: The signifier is the physical form (e.g. the letters ‘T-R-E-E’, a photograph of a tree). The signified is the mental concept (the idea of a tree). They are two halves of a sign, like two sides of a coin.

Code: A set of conventions or rules that help us make sense of signs. Media codes include camera work, lighting, editing and colour. When you see warm orange tones in a sunset scene, a visual code tells you it is romantic.

7. Narrative Structures |

Linear Narrative: A story told in chronological order from beginning to end, with events unfolding in sequence. Think of it as a straight line drawn from A to B. Most fairy tales are linear.

Non-linear Narrative: A story where events are presented out of chronological order — through flashbacks, flash-forwards or fragmented timelines. It is like a jigsaw puzzle you gradually reassemble. Films like Memento rely on this.

Equilibrium (Todorov): Tzvetan Todorov’s theory that stories follow a pattern: equilibrium (stable beginning), disruption (something goes wrong), recognition of disruption, attempt to repair, new equilibrium. Memorise this by thinking of a burger: bun (stable), patty (problem), bun again (new stability).

Enigma Code (Barthes): Roland Barthes’ concept where a narrative poses questions or presents mysteries that keep the audience intrigued. A cliffhanger is an enigma. Ask yourself: ‘What riddle is keeping me watching?’

8. Audience Categories |

Target Audience: The specific group of people a media product is aimed at, defined by age, gender, interests or lifestyle. Everything from the font to the presenter is chosen to appeal to this group.

Demographic: A way of categorising audiences by measurable characteristics such as age, income, education and occupation. Advertisers often use socio-economic grades (A, B, C1, C2, D, E) to segment people.

Psychographic: Audience segmentation based on attitudes, values, beliefs and personality rather than just statistics. Think of the explorer, the reformer, the mainstream consumer — these are psychographic profiles.

Niche Audience: A small, specialist audience with a highly specific interest, such as a channel dedicated to model railways. Niche equals narrow but deeply engaged.

Mass Audience: A broad, mainstream group with diverse tastes, aimed at by prime-time television shows and blockbuster films. They consume popular, widely distributed content.

9. Media Industry Key Terms |

Convergence: The coming together of different media technologies, platforms and industries. Your smartphone is a prime example: it is a phone, camera, music player and web browser all in one device. Convergence blurs the lines between previously separate media.

Synergy: Two or more branches of a media company working together to promote a product across multiple platforms. For example, a film studio and a fast-food chain collaborating to put toy characters in kids’ meals. Remember it as ‘synergy = energy together’.

Public Service Broadcaster (PSB): A broadcaster whose main purpose is to inform, educate and entertain the public, rather than chase profit. The BBC is the classic PSB. Think of it as a service paid for by the public, working for the public.

Regulation: The rules and oversight that control what media organisations can show and say. In the UK, Ofcom regulates television, radio and on-demand services. Regulation is like a referee ensuring fair play, especially regarding harmful content and the watershed.

10. Representation & Stereotypes |

Representation: How media portrays people, places, events and ideas. Representations are constructed, not natural — they reflect a certain viewpoint. When you see a politician in soft light, that representation aims to make them appear trustworthy.

Stereotype: An oversimplified, often repeated portrayal of a group, reducing them to a few simple characteristics. For example, the ‘nerd’ with glasses and high-waisted trousers. Stereotypes shortcut thinking but can reinforce prejudice.

Countertype: A positive or deliberate challenge to a traditional stereotype, showing a group in a new, often progressive light. A female mechanic or a stay-at-home dad in an advert can be a countertype.

Archetype: A universal, recognisable character model that appears across stories and cultures — the hero, the mentor, the trickster. Unlike stereotypes, archetypes are timeless patterns, not lazy oversimplifications. Think of the wise old wizard as an archetype.

Ideology: A system of ideas, values and beliefs held by an individual or group, often presented in media texts as ‘common sense’. A lifestyle magazine that constantly promotes luxury travel carries a pro-consumerist ideology. Questioning ideology means asking: ‘Whose interests does this message serve?’
