📚 Year 10 CIE Music: Case Study Practical Walkthrough |

In the CIE IGCSE Music listening paper, you are often asked to compare two contrasting pieces of music and discuss their use of musical elements. This case study walkthrough will guide you through the process using two clear examples: the first movement of Mozart’s ‘Eine kleine Nachtmusik’ and a West African drumming piece ‘Kuku’. By the end of this article, you will be able to confidently describe, explain and compare pieces in exam conditions.

1. Setting Up Your Case Study |

Before you start analysing, you need to familiarise yourself with the background information of both works. Work A is the first movement of Mozart’s Serenade No. 13 for strings in G major, K. 525, commonly known as ‘Eine kleine Nachtmusik’, composed in 1787 during the Classical period. It is scored for a string ensemble of two violins, viola, cello and optional double bass. Work B is the traditional West African piece ‘Kuku’, performed by a percussion ensemble using djembe drums, dundun bass drums and bells. This piece originates from Guinea and is played at celebratory events.

Start by listening to each piece several times without writing anything. For Mozart, note the clear, balanced phrases and the homophonic texture. For ‘Kuku’, focus on the layered rhythms and call-and-response patterns. Write down immediate impressions in two columns: one for each work.

Then use a structured listening chart with headings such as Instrumentation, Tempo, Dynamics, Melody, Rhythm, Harmony, Texture, Structure and Mood. Fill it in as you listen actively, pausing and replaying specific sections. This chart will become your roadmap for the written comparison.

2. Melodic Features |

Mozart’s melody opens with a famous rising arpeggio figure in the tonic key of G major, followed by a descending stepwise sequence. The phrases are symmetrical, often in eight-bar periods, typical of the Classical style. Grace notes and trills add ornamentation and lightness.

The main theme is memorable and balanced, moving mostly by step with occasional leaps of a third or fourth. Mozart reuses this theme throughout the movement, varying it through repetition and transposition. This thematic consistency gives the movement a strong sense of unity.

In ‘Kuku’, the melody is primarily rhythmic, built from short patterns played on the djembe and bells. The lead drummer often improvises over a repeating ostinato. There is no pitched melody as such, but the combination of drum tones – high slap, tone and bass – creates a melodic contour that rises and falls in tension.

The djembe soloist uses rapid rolls and pitch bends to mimic a singing voice, a technique central to West African musical expression. The bell pattern remains constant, acting as a timeline, while the varying drum motifs provide a foreground ‘melodic’ interest.

3. Rhythmic Organisation |

The Mozart movement is in simple quadruple time (4/4) with a steady tempo marking Allegro. The rhythm uses straightforward note values such as crotchets, quavers and semiquavers, with occasional dotted rhythms to drive the music forward. Syncopation is rarely used, and phrases often end with a clear cadence on a strong beat.

Rhythmic patterns in Mozart are highly regular, reinforcing the dance-like character of the serenade. The accompaniment maintains a steady quaver or crotchet pulse beneath the melody, creating a smooth and predictable flow. Periodically, the rhythm becomes more energetic with semiquaver runs in the violins.

West African drumming in ‘Kuku’ features polyrhythms, where multiple contrasting rhythms are layered simultaneously. The dundun plays a steady pulse like a heartbeat, while the djembe parts interlock. Syncopation is central, and the lead drummer creates rhythmic tension by playing off-beat accents. The tempo remains constant throughout but feels energised by the complex cross-rhythms.
