1. Mock Exam Overview |
The mock paper is divided into two sections: Section A contains three compulsory short-answer questions worth 4 marks each, testing precision and clarity on core topics. Section B offers a choice of two essay questions from which you must answer one, worth 14 marks, requiring extended critical evaluation. The total mark is 26, and the recommended time is 50 minutes.
The topics covered are from the IGCSE Philosophy syllabus: epistemology (the definition of knowledge), ethics (utilitarianism), philosophy of religion (the problem of evil), and meta-ethics or free will themes in the essays. By working through this paper, you will see how to link concepts and develop arguments under timed conditions.
2. Section A: Short-Answer Questions – What to Expect | A 部分:简答题 – 如何应对
Each 4-mark question demands a focused response. The examiner looks for accurate definitions, clear distinctions, and a relevant example or objection where required. You do not need an introduction or conclusion; go straight to the point. Using key philosophical terms correctly is essential.
For a question that says ‘State and explain,’ you should allocate roughly 2 marks for stating and 2 for explaining. If a question asks for a distinction, spend half your answer on each side of the contrast. Always check the command words: ‘Define,’ ‘Distinguish,’ ‘Outline,’ and ‘Explain’ each imply a different structure.
3. Question 1: Defining Knowledge – JTB and the Gettier Challenge | 问题 1:定义知识 – JTB 与葛梯尔挑战
The question: ‘State the tripartite definition of knowledge and explain one challenge to it.’ [4 marks]
The mark scheme awards up to 2 marks for correctly identifying the three conditions – belief, truth, and justification – and showing they are jointly necessary. The remaining 2 marks go to explaining a specific challenge such as a standard Gettier case, demonstrating why justified true belief (JTB) appears insufficient.
Common mistake: some candidates merely list the three words without linking them into a single definition. To secure full marks, you must phrase it as ‘Knowledge is justified true belief’ and explain that all three must be satisfied. For the challenge, avoid just saying ‘Gettier showed it’s wrong’ – explain the structure of a Gettier case.
4. Q1 Model Answer and Examiner Comments |
Model answer: Knowledge is classically defined as justified true belief. A subject S knows a proposition P if and only if P is true, S believes that P, and S has justification for believing P. However, the Gettier problem shows this definition may not be sufficient. In a famous case, Smith has strong evidence that Jones will get the job, and he believes the proposition ‘The man with ten coins in his pocket will get the job.’ Unbeknownst to Smith, he himself has ten coins in his pocket and he, not Jones, gets the job. Smith’s belief is true and justified, yet it seems he does not know this proposition, because his justification rests on false grounds.
Examiner comments: This answer gains full marks. It states the JTB conditions accurately and uses the ‘S knows P’ formulation. The Gettier case is explained with precision – note the false-grounds reasoning is identified, which is key to showing why JTB fails. The answer stays within the recommended length and uses philosophical vocabulary confidently.
5. Question 2: Act and Rule Utilitarianism |
The question: ‘Distinguish between act utilitarianism and rule utilitarianism. You may use an example.’ [4 marks]
Mark scheme highlights: 2 marks for clearly explaining act utilitarianism – the view that an action is right if it maximises utility in that individual situation. 2 marks for rule utilitarianism – the view that an action is right if it conforms to a rule which, if generally followed, would maximise utility. A concrete example strengthens the distinction but is not required for top marks.
Many students confuse rule utilitarianism with deontology. Make sure you root rule utilitarianism in the principle of utility: rules are selected because following them tends to produce the greatest happiness, not because they are intrinsically right. The example of promise-keeping is classic: an act utilitarian might break a promise if it creates more overall happiness, whereas a rule utilitarian would keep it because the rule ‘keep promises’ generally maximises welfare.
6. Q2 Model Answer and Examiner Comments |
Model answer: Act utilitarianism, associated with Bentham, evaluates each individual action by the amount of pleasure or happiness it produces. An action is right if it results in the greatest happiness for the greatest number in that particular situation. By contrast, rule utilitarianism, developed by Mill, judges actions based on whether they follow a set of rules that, if universally adopted, would lead to the greatest overall happiness. For instance, consider telling a lie to save a friend’s feelings. An act utilitarian might calculate the immediate happiness gained and decide the lie is right. A rule utilitarian would appeal to the rule ‘do not lie’, because a society where lying is a general practice would undermine trust and reduce overall happiness, even if a single lie seems beneficial.
Examiner comments: Full marks awarded. The distinction is drawn sharply with clear attribution to Bentham and Mill. The candidate avoids conflating rule utilitarianism with Kantian ethics by noting the happiness criterion for rule selection. The lie example is used skilfully to show how the two theories can diverge in practice. To improve further, the answer could explicitly state that rule utilitarianism is still a consequentialist theory, but this is not required at 4 marks.
7. Question 3: The Problem of Evil – Logical and Evidential Versions |
The question: ‘Outline the logical problem of evil and one theistic response to it.’ [4 marks]
The mark scheme splits marks equally: 2 marks for stating the logical problem – typically the inconsistent triad: if God is omnipotent, omnibenevolent, and omniscient, evil should not exist; yet evil exists. Therefore, such a God cannot exist. 2 marks for a relevant response, such as the free will defence: God allows evil because genuine free will is a greater good, and it is logically impossible for God to both give free will and prevent all moral evil. Reference to Alvin Plantinga or the distinction between moral and natural evil can strengthen the response.
Candidates sometimes drift into describing the evidential problem of evil instead of the logical problem. The logical problem argues that the existence of any evil at all is logically incompatible with God’s attributes; the evidential problem argues that the amount and distribution of evil makes God’s existence unlikely. Be precise about which version you are addressing in your answer.
8. Q3 Model Answer and Examiner Comments |
Model answer: The logical problem of evil asserts that the traditional theistic God – omnipotent, omnibenevolent, and omniscient – is logically incompatible with the existence of evil. If God is all-powerful, He could prevent evil; if all-loving, He would want to; and if all-knowing, He would know how. Since evil nevertheless exists, the God described cannot exist. One theistic response is the free will defence. Plantinga argues that God could not create a world containing moral good without also permitting the possibility of moral evil, because genuine free will requires the capacity to choose wrongly. A world with free creatures who sometimes do evil is more valuable than a world of predetermined automata. Therefore, the existence of evil does not logically contradict God’s existence, because God might have a morally sufficient reason – the greater good of free will – to allow evil.
Examiner comments: A full-mark answer. The inconsistent triad is clearly articulated, and the free will defence is explained with the key logical point: it is not a matter of God’s power failing, but of a logical impossibility. The candidate names Plantinga and links the value of free will to the solution. To reach the top band, avoid saying ‘God gave us free will so we are to blame for evil’ – that is a theodicy, not a defence. This answer stays strictly on the logical compatibility claim.
9. Section B: Essay Questions – Approach and Marking Criteria | B
In Section B you choose one essay from two options. The essay is marked out of 14 using CIE’s level descriptors: knowledge and understanding (up to 4 marks), analysis and evaluation (up to 10 marks). You must go beyond description, weighing arguments for and against a claim, and reaching a justified conclusion. Structure counts: a clear introduction that defines key terms and signposts your argument, balanced paragraphs exploring different perspectives, and a conclusion that answers the question directly are essential.
Top essays show philosophical insight by engaging with counter-arguments and addressing assumptions. Use thinkers’ names where relevant, but do not name-drop without substance. Always tie each paragraph back to the essay question. The following two sample essay questions and their model answers will illustrate how to hit the high mark bands.
10. Essay Question 1: Free Will and Determinism – Unpacking the Question |
The question: ‘To what extent does determinism undermine moral responsibility?’ Discuss. [14]
Key terms to define early: determinism – the thesis that every event, including human actions, is causally determined by prior states and laws of nature; moral responsibility – the idea that agents can be praised or blamed for actions if those actions are done freely. You must consider both sides: if all actions are determined, can we hold people accountable? Compatibilists argue that freedom is compatible with determinism if we act on our own desires without coercion. Incompatibilists insist that genuine free will requires the ability to do otherwise, which determinism denies. A high-level essay will also touch on the consequences for punishment and justice.
To score top marks, do not merely report positions. Evaluate them: for example, is the compatibilist notion of freedom too shallow? Does the incompatibilist position make moral responsibility impossible and thus undermine social cohesion? Reach a reasoned conclusion about whether determinism, even if true, really undermines moral responsibility.
11. Essay Question 1: Full Model Answer with Commentary |
The following answer would receive a mark in the 12–14 range. It is condensed for illustration; in an exam you would write about 1.5–2 sides.
Model answer (excerpt): ‘Determinism claims that all events have a sufficient cause. If human choices are determined, it seems we could never have done otherwise, which threatens moral responsibility. How can we blame a thief if his actions were inevitable? However, compatibilism offers a way out. Hume argued that freedom means acting according to one’s own will, not the absence of causation. A determined choice can still be my choice. On this view, moral responsibility survives because we hold people responsible for actions that flow from their character, regardless of determinism. Yet critics, like Kant, insist that only a will free from natural necessity can ground genuine praise and blame – mere conformity to desire is not enough for autonomy. Moreover, if we accepted hard determinism and abandoned moral responsibility, we might have to abandon retributive punishment, perhaps adopting a rehabilitation model. After weighing these arguments, determinism does not completely undermine moral responsibility because the compatibilist account successfully preserves the practice of holding people accountable for character-based actions, though it forces us to reconsider the justification of punishment.’
