1. What is Sociology? |

Sociology is the systematic study of human society. It examines the structures of groups, organisations, and societies and how people interact within these contexts. At the Year 9 SQA level, you learn to see the connection between personal troubles and public issues, as described by sociologist C. Wright Mills in his concept of the ‘sociological imagination’.

Sociology differs from psychology by focusing on group behaviour rather than individual mental processes. It asks how social forces, such as class, gender, and ethnicity, shape our identities, opportunities, and relationships. Studying sociology helps you question taken-for-granted assumptions and view the world with a critical eye.

2. Sociological Perspectives |

Sociologists use different theoretical perspectives to explain how society works. The three main perspectives you need to know are functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism. Feminism is another important perspective that analyses gender inequalities.

Functionalism sees society as a system of interconnected parts (like the organs in a body) that work together to maintain stability and social order. Institutions such as the family, education, and religion each serve functions that contribute to the overall health of society. Auguste Comte and Emile Durkheim were early functionalist thinkers.

Conflict theory, rooted in the work of Karl Marx, emphasises the role of power and inequality in society. It argues that society is characterised by conflict between different social classes over limited resources. Capitalism creates a class struggle between the bourgeoisie (owners) and the proletariat (workers).

Symbolic interactionism focuses on everyday interactions and the meanings people attach to symbols, language, and behaviours. It examines how individuals interpret and define their social world through communication. George Herbert Mead and Herbert Blumer are key figures in this perspective.

Feminist sociology highlights the ways in which society is structured by gender inequality. It critiques patriarchy and examines how gender roles limit both women and men. Feminists argue for social change to achieve gender equality in all spheres of life.

3. Socialisation | 社会化

Socialisation is the lifelong process through which individuals learn the norms, values, and behaviours appropriate to their society. It shapes our identity and sense of self. Without socialisation, children would not develop the skills needed to function in society.

Primary socialisation occurs in early childhood, mainly within the family. Children learn language, basic norms, and emotional bonds. Secondary socialisation takes place later through schools, peer groups, media, and workplaces, where individuals learn the specific skills and norms required in wider society.

Agents of socialisation include the family, school, peer group, mass media, and religion. Each agent transmits cultural expectations and helps individuals internalise society’s values. The influence of these agents changes throughout a person’s life course.

4. Culture, Norms and Values |

Culture refers to the shared way of life of a group of people, including their beliefs, values, language, customs, and material objects. It is learned and passed from one generation to the next. Culture can be material (physical objects) or non-material (ideas and beliefs).

Norms are the unwritten rules that govern behaviour in specific situations. They can be classified as folkways (everyday customs like saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’), mores (moral standards, such as not stealing), and laws (formally enforced rules with legal penalties). Values are the general beliefs about what is good, desirable, and important in a society, such as honesty, respect, and equality.

Cultural diversity refers to the existence of a variety of cultural groups within a society. Subcultures are groups whose values and norms differ from the mainstream culture but do not oppose them. Countercultures, however, actively challenge and reject mainstream values, for instance, hippie movements in the 1960s.

5. Social Control and Deviance |

Social control refers to the mechanisms society uses to regulate individual behaviour and ensure conformity to norms. It can be formal (e.g., police, courts, prisons) or informal (e.g., family approval, peer pressure, gossip). Both types work together to maintain order.

Deviance is any behaviour that violates social norms. What is considered deviant varies across cultures and time periods. For example, drinking alcohol is legal in the UK but deviant in some religious communities. Labelling theory, associated with Howard Becker, suggests that deviance is not inherent in an act, but rather a label applied by those with power.
