All your essay responses are measured against three Assessment Objectives (AOs). AO1 tests your knowledge and understanding of the period, people and events. AO2 requires you to explain and analyse historical events and developments using second-order concepts such as causation, consequence, change, continuity, similarity and significance. AO3 focuses on your ability to analyse, evaluate and use sources to make substantiated judgements. Each question on the paper is weighted differently across these AOs, so knowing what each question demands is the first step to writing a focused answer.

AO What it means
AO1 Knowledge & Understanding Describe, How…, Explain…
AO2 Explanation & Analysis Explain the importance…, Write an account…, Essay questions
AO3 Source Analysis & Evaluation How useful…, What is the main difference…, Study sources…

2. The Universal Essay Framework: PEEL & Beyond | 通用论文框架:PEEL及更多

For almost every extended writing question, the PEEL structure (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) offers a reliable foundation. Start with a clear topic sentence that directly answers the question. Then introduce precise factual evidence – dates, names, statistics, terminology. Follow this with explanation that shows why your evidence matters, often by linking to concepts such as causation or significance. Finally, link back to the question or forward to the next point to maintain a coherent argument. As you move to more advanced answers, add evaluation by discussing degrees of importance or change, and by exploring counter-arguments before reaching a substantiated conclusion.

3. Handling Describe Questions |

Describe questions typically ask you to outline key features of an event or situation. They mainly test AO1 knowledge. Your answer should be structured around two clear points, each supported by specific detail. Avoid telling the story of what happened; instead, identify characteristics. For example, “Describe the League of Nations’ weaknesses in the 1930s.” A strong response might focus on structural weaknesses (unanimous voting, no permanent army) and the impact of absent powers (the USA not joining, Germany and Japan leaving).

Model paragraph (Describe): One major weakness was the League’s lack of enforcement power. The League had no permanent army of its own and relied on member states to provide forces, which they were often reluctant to do. For instance, when Italy invaded Abyssinia in 1935, the League imposed economic sanctions but failed to take military action, emboldening Mussolini. Additionally, the requirement for unanimous decisions meant that any member could veto collective action, paralysing the League at critical moments.

4. Tackling Explain / Write an Account Questions |

These questions demand that you show how one event led to another or why something happened. They heavily target AO2. A common pitfall is simply describing a sequence of events. Instead, you must identify causal connections. Use phrases like “this led to… because…”, “as a result…”, or “the trigger was…”. A typical question is: “Explain why the Cold War escalated between 1945 and 1949.” Your answer should select two or three key reasons (e.g. ideological differences, the Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan, the Berlin Blockade) and demonstrate how each intensified tensions.

Model paragraph (Explain): The Truman Doctrine of 1947 marked a turning point because it committed the USA to a policy of containment, directly challenging Soviet expansion. When Britain could no longer afford to support the Greek government against communist rebels, President Truman declared that the USA would support free peoples resisting armed subjugation. This led to immediate tension because Stalin viewed it as a declaration of ideological war. As a result, the USSR tightened its grip on Eastern Europe, creating a cycle of action and reaction that escalated the Cold War further.

5. Mastering the How Far Do You Agree Essay |

This is the extended judgement question, often worth 16 marks plus SPaG. You are given a statement and asked to explain how far you agree. Your response must show balance: present arguments for and against, then reach a clear, justified conclusion. A strong structure: a brief introduction stating your line of argument; two or three paragraphs supporting one side; one or two paragraphs offering a counter-argument; and a conclusion that weighs the factors and comes to a decisive verdict.

Model paragraph (How Far, counter-argument): However, it would be simplistic to argue that the Depression was the sole cause of Hitler’s rise to power. The Nazis’ own political tactics were equally decisive. The party’s sophisticated use of propaganda, orchestrated by Joseph Goebbels, targeted different social groups with tailored messages. Furthermore, the weakness of the Weimar Republic’s political system, particularly the use of Article 48, had already undermined faith in democracy before the economic crisis erupted. Thus, while the Depression created the conditions for Nazi success, it was their exploitation of those conditions that proved decisive.

6. Source Analysis: Utility Questions |

AQA papers feature source questions where you must assess the utility of a source for a specific enquiry. The formula “Content + Provenance = Utility” is a good starting point. Begin by stating what the source is useful for, using direct quotes from the content. Then examine the provenance (who wrote it, when, why, and to whom) to explain its strengths and limitations. Never call a source “biased” and stop; explain how a particular perspective gives us valuable insight into contemporary attitudes or limits its reliability for certain facts.

Model paragraph (Utility): Source A is highly useful for a historian studying British attitudes towards appeasement because it captures the widespread public fear of another war in 1938. The author, a journalist for The Times, describes the ‘overwhelming sense of relief’ following the Munich Agreement. As a contemporary newspaper article, its value lies in revealing the dominant mood at the time. However, its utility is limited by the fact that it reflects elite, metropolitan opinion and does not necessarily represent the views of working-class communities or politicians who, like Churchill, opposed appeasement.

7. Source Analysis: Comparing Sources |

When asked to identify the main difference or similarity between two sources, you must focus on the message or argument, not just the topic. Begin with a clear statement like: “The main difference between Source B and Source C is their interpretation of the New Deal’s success.” Then support this with specific evidence from each source, using short quotes. Finally, briefly explain why that difference exists, linking to provenance if appropriate. Avoid simply saying they “disagree”; pinpoint exactly what they disagree about.

Model paragraph (Comparison): The main difference between Source D and Source E is their portrayal of the Soviet Union’s role in the origins of the Cold War. Source D, a speech by a US diplomat, presents the USSR as an aggressive expansionist power, claiming Stalin sought to spread communism ‘by force and sabotage’. In contrast, Source E, a cartoon from a Soviet magazine, depicts the USA as the aggressor, using economic imperialism to dominate Europe. This difference arises because each source was produced within a specific ideological framework, intending to justify its own side’s foreign policy actions.

8. Writing an Introduction that Impresses |

An introduction for an essay question should do three things: define the time frame or key terms, show your awareness of the debate, and signal your overall judgement. Avoid the ‘Since the dawn of time’ cliché. Instead, set precise parameters. For example: ‘The period 1919-1939 saw a sustained attempt to create lasting peace through the League of Nations, yet it ultimately failed to prevent another world war. While structural weaknesses were significant, it was the reluctance of major powers to enforce collective security that sealed the League’s fate.’

9. Developing Analytical Explanation |

Avoid narrative at all costs in analysis-focused questions. Instead of writing ‘Then Henry VIII asked the pope for a divorce, and he said no’, transform it: ‘Henry VIII’s desire for a male heir precipitated a break with Rome because the pope’s refusal to grant an annulment demonstrated the political limits of papal authority over Tudor England. This drove Henry to assert royal supremacy, a decisive step in establishing the English Reformation.’ Notice the use of causal language (‘precipitated’, ‘drove’) and the clear focus on significance.

10. Time Management and Planning Techniques |

Before writing anything, spend 2-4 minutes planning. Scribble a brief outline: your main argument, 3-4 topic sentences, and a keyword for evidence under each. This prevents you from going off on tangents. For a 16-mark essay with SPaG, allocate approximately 20-25 minutes: 3 minutes to plan, 17-20 minutes to write, and 2 minutes to check. Always leave time to read your answer; a spelling correction or the addition of a key term can lift your SPaG mark.

Question type Suggested time Marks
Source utility (8 marks) 12-14 minutes 8
Write an account / Explain (8 marks) 12-14 minutes 8
How far do you agree (16 marks + SPaG) 22-25 minutes 16 + 4 SPaG

11. Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them | 常见错误及如何避免

Mistake 1: Retelling the story. You lose marks for narrative. Fix: begin every paragraph with an analytical point, not a date. Mistake 2: Vague evidence. Phrases like “many people were unhappy” gain no credit. Fix: commit to memory five to ten specific statistics or quotes per topic. Mistake 3: Ignoring the question focus. Using a pre-learned essay. Fix: underline the command word and key concept in the question, and refer back to it in every paragraph. Mistake 4: Treating sources as true or false. Fix: always evaluate a source’s utility, reliability or perspective instead of simply discrediting it.

12. Full Model Answer: How Far Do You Agree? |

Question: ‘The Treaty of Versailles was the main cause of the Second World War.’ How far do you agree?

The Treaty of Versailles undoubtedly created deep resentment in Germany and destabilised the post-war international order. However, to argue it was the main cause ignores the decisive role of the Great Depression and the failures of appeasement in the 1930s. While Versailles planted the seeds, it was the economic crisis and the policy of the Western powers that allowed those seeds to grow into another global conflict.

On one hand, the Treaty contributed heavily to the outbreak of war. Its terms, particularly the War Guilt Clause (Article 231), humiliated Germany and placed an immense burden of reparations of £6.6 billion on the Weimar Republic. This economic strain fuelled hyperinflation in 1923 and eroded faith in the new democratic government. The loss of territory, such as the Polish Corridor and the demilitarisation of the Rhineland, left ongoing grievances that Hitler exploited to justify his expansionist policies. Without the legacy of Versailles, the Nazis’ promises to overturn the treaty would have lacked the same popular appeal.

Nevertheless, focusing exclusively on the treaty overlooks more immediate causes. The Great Depression, which began with the Wall Street Crash in 1929, destroyed the fragile Weimar economy. Unemployment soared to six million by 1932, and extremist parties gained unprecedented support in the Reichstag. In this climate of desperation, the Nazis became the largest party, and Hitler was appointed Chancellor in January 1933. The Depression was therefore the catalyst that turned latent resentment into political opportunity. Furthermore, the policy of appeasement pursued by Britain and France in the 1930s, allowing the remilitarisation of the Rhineland in 1936 and the annexation of Austria in 1938, convinced Hitler of Western weakness and encouraged further aggression.

In weighing these factors, the Treaty of Versailles was a significant underlying cause, but it was not sufficient alone. The Great Depression provided the immediate conditions for the Nazi seizure of power, and appeasement failed to check that power once it was consolidated. Therefore, while the Treaty was an essential precondition, the more decisive factors were the economic collapse and the failure of collective security in the 1930s.
