1. Knowing the AQA Assessment Objectives | 了解 AQA 评估目标

High achievers know that AQA marks your work against four Assessment Objectives (AOs). AO1 tests your knowledge and understanding of key features and characteristics. AO2 requires you to explain and analyse historical events. AO3 focuses on analysing and evaluating sources, while AO4 asks you to make substantiated judgements about interpretations. Before you start revising, print out the mark schemes from the AQA website and highlight the phrases examiners use to describe top-level responses. This will shape the way you answer every question.

For instance, for a Level 4 essay, the mark scheme says ‘analysis is sustained and well directed’ and ‘judgements are fully substantiated’. Top students build their revision around practicing how to sustain analysis rather than just memorising facts. They know that simply describing events will never break into the top band.

2. Active Recall and Spaced Repetition |

Passively reading your notes or textbook creates an illusion of competence. High achievers use active recall: they close the book and try to reconstruct the key themes, chronology, and causes of an event from memory. They might draw a mind map of the problems facing the Weimar Republic or list the five reasons for the failure of the League of Nations without looking. Spaced repetition then ensures that they revisit the topic at increasing intervals, embedding it into long-term memory.

Use flashcards with a question on one side and a concise answer on the other, but do not simply copy definitions. Turn them into ‘explain why’ questions. For example: ‘Why did hyperinflation occur in Germany in 1923?’ The back should have 3–4 linked points showing causation. This trains your brain for AO2, which is often the largest weighting in the exam.

3. Structuring Your Notes Thematically |

Many students organise notes chronologically, which is useful for narrative, but AQA often asks thematic questions. High scorers create thematic revision grids. For a unit like ‘America, 1920–1973: Opportunity and Inequality’, they might have columns for Political issues, Social and cultural change, Economic developments, and Foreign policy. Each row represents a decade. This makes it easier to track change and continuity across time and to plan essays on topics such as ‘How did the role of women in American society change between 1920 and 1960?’

For each cell, include specific factual detail and a brief analytical comment. For example, under ‘1920s – Social change’ you might write ‘Flappers, jazz, increased consumerism (AO1) – but change was limited to urban, white middle-class women; rural and African American women saw little benefit (AO2).’ This dual approach saves you time when revising for the final exam because you are already connecting knowledge and analysis.

AQA’s source questions, such as ‘How useful is Source A to a historian studying…’ confuse many students. Top-grade candidates do not just list what they can see. They systematically evaluate the source’s CONTENT, PROVENANCE, and CONTEXT. They ask: What information is included or omitted? Who created the source, when, and for what purpose? How does the wider historical context affect its usefulness? And crucially, they always consider limitations alongside strengths.

A common mistake is calling a source ‘biased’ and leaving it there. High achievers explain the nature of the bias and what it reveals about the attitudes of the time. For example, a Nazi propaganda poster is useful for showing how the regime wanted to portray young people, but it is limited in revealing how young people actually thought. By writing in a balanced way, you directly hit the ‘supported judgement’ criteria in the top mark band.

5. Dealing with Historical Interpretations (AO4) | 处理历史解释(AO4)

In papers that focus on interpretations, such as the British depth study of Elizabethan England or the wider world depth study, you are given two differing views. High achievers treat this section as a debate. First, they identify the main argument of each interpretation and then support or challenge it using precise factual knowledge. They never just describe the interpretations; they actively analyse why the historians might have reached different conclusions based on the evidence they selected.

A top-scoring paragraph structure could be: ‘Interpretation A argues that…’ followed by specific examples that support it, but then also noting ‘However, this interpretation underplays the significance of…’ and providing counter-examples. This shows you can evaluate and not just report. Remember, you are not being asked which interpretation is ‘correct’ but rather which you find more convincing based on evidence.
