📚 AQA GCSE Philosophy Quick Reference to Key Arguments and Principles | AQA

This handbook distils the most important philosophical arguments, ethical theories and logical structures from the AQA GCSE Religious Studies (Philosophy and Ethics) specification into a clear, formula-style reference. Each entry presents the core ‘theorem’ – the logical skeleton of the argument or principle – together with key strengths, weaknesses, definitions and synoptic links. Use it for quick revision, essay planning and to sharpen your analysis.

1. The Teleological Argument (Design Argument) |

Core theorem – Paley’s watch analogy:

P1: A watch exhibits complexity and purpose, so it must have an intelligent designer.

P2: The universe and natural things (e.g., the eye) exhibit far greater complexity and purpose.

C: Therefore, the universe must have a powerful, intelligent designer – God.

Additional formulations:

Aquinas’s Fifth Way: Natural bodies act towards an end (telos) even without intelligence, so they must be directed by an intelligent being.

The anthropic principle: The universe’s physical constants are finely tuned to allow life – this suggests deliberate design.

Key challenges:

Hume’s critique: The universe is not sufficiently like a machine; analogies are weak. Even if a designer exists, it does not prove the God of classical theism (e.g., the designer may be finite, fallible, or a committee of gods).

Darwin’s evolution by natural selection explains apparent design without a designer; nature’s ‘purpose’ can be reduced to survival advantage.

Problem of evil and dysteleology: Poor ‘design’ features (e.g., the appendix, suffering) challenge the idea of a benevolent, omnipotent designer.

2. The Cosmological Argument (First Cause Argument) |

Aquinas’s Second Way (efficient causation):

P1: Every event or thing has a cause; nothing causes itself.

P2: The chain of causes cannot extend backwards to infinity (infinite regress is impossible).

C: Therefore, there must be a first uncaused cause, which is God.

Kalam cosmological argument (Al-Kindi, reintroduced by William Lane Craig):

P1: Everything that begins to exist has a cause.

P2: The universe began to exist.

C: Therefore, the universe has a cause (a personal creator – God).

Key challenges:

Russell: ‘Just because every human has a mother does not mean the human race has a mother.’ The fallacy of composition; the universe as a whole may not need a cause.

Hume: We have no experience of creating a universe; causal principles derived from our world cannot be applied to the universe’s origin.

Quantum physics suggests particles can come into existence without a discernible cause, questioning the premise that ‘everything that begins to exist has a cause’.

Even if a first cause is proved, it need not be the God of theism; it could be a non-personal force.

3. The Problem of Evil and Suffering |

The logical problem of evil (Epicurus, Mackie):

P1: If God is omnipotent, He can prevent all evil and suffering.

P2: If God is omnibenevolent, He would want to prevent all evil and suffering.

P3: Evil and suffering exist.

C: Therefore, an omnipotent, omnibenevolent God does not exist.

Theodicies and defences (theorems of defence):

Augustinian theodicy: Evil is not a substance but a privation of good (privatio boni); it came into the world through the misuse of free will by angels and humans. Suffering is a just punishment for original sin. God is not responsible.

Irenaean theodicy (Hick): Creation is a ‘soul-making’ process. Suffering and evil are necessary for the development of moral and spiritual virtues; a perfect world would produce immature automatons. Everyone will eventually attain the likeness of God.

Free-will defence: Genuinely free creatures can choose evil; a world with free will and evil is better than a world without free will. It is logically impossible for God to create free beings who always choose good.

Key counters:

The evidential problem: The sheer amount, intensity and apparent pointless nature of suffering (e.g., natural disasters, animal suffering) makes the claim of a loving God improbable.

Augustine’s theodicy clashes with our scientific understanding of creation and fails to explain why a perfect creation could fall.

Hick’s soul-making fails to justify excessive, horrendous evils that destroy souls rather than make them.

4. The Argument from Miracles |

Hume’s definition and sceptical theorem:

A miracle is ‘a transgression of a law of nature by a particular volition of the Deity’. Hume argues that no testimony is sufficient to establish a miracle unless its falsehood would be more miraculous than the fact it tries to establish.

P1: A wise person proportions belief to evidence.

P2: The laws of nature are backed by uniform, repeated experience.

P3: Testimony for miracles conflicts with these laws and varies in quality.

C: Therefore, it is always more probable that the testimony is mistaken or false than that a miracle actually occurred.

Swinburne’s counter-principle:

Swinburne defines a miracle as a non-repeatable counter-instance to a law of nature brought about by a god. He argues that if God exists, miracles are not inherently improbable; we should assess evidence with an open mind, applying principles of testimony and credulity. The occurrence of a miracle can be the more probable explanation if the evidence is strong and the event is deeply meaningful.

Key challenges:

Hume’s practical argument: Most miracle claims are from ignorant, unreliable sources and conflict with each other (different religions).

Problem of induction: We assume nature is uniform, but as Hume showed, induction itself cannot be rationally justified – undercutting the very base of laws of nature.

Wiles: A God who intervenes on some occasions but not others (e.g., not in the Holocaust) seems arbitrary and morally inconsistent.

5. The Argument from Religious Experience |

Principle of credulity (Swinburne) and principle of testimony (Reid):

P1: Unless we have good reason to disbelieve, we should accept that things are as they seem to be (principle of credulity).

P2: People generally report their experiences honestly and accurately; we should trust their testimony unless there are strong grounds for doubt (principle of testimony).

P3: Millions claim to have experienced a transcendent reality, a sense of the numinous (Otto), or a direct awareness of God.

C: Therefore, it is rational to believe that God (or a transcendent reality) exists as the most probable cause of these experiences.

James’s four marks of mystical experience:

Ineffability (cannot be described), noetic quality (reveals knowledge), transiency (temporary), passivity (feels subject to external control). These give the experiences a degree of authority for the experiencer.

Key challenges:

Freud: Religious experiences are projections of unconscious psychological needs (wish-fulfilment) or a regressive return to infantile security.

Empirical testability: Experiences are private and subjective; they cannot be checked or verified. Different religions give contradictory experiences (e.g., Christian vs Hindu).

Neuroscience can induce religious-like sensations through brain stimulation (e.g., temporal lobe epilepsy, drugs), suggesting purely natural causes.

6. The Moral Argument for God’s Existence |

Kant’s formulation (in adaptation):

P1: Moral law exists objectively; we feel an unconditional sense of duty (categorical imperative).

P2: ‘Ought implies can’ – what we are morally required to do must be achievable. The supreme good (summum bonum) is the union of perfect virtue and perfect happiness, which we are duty-bound to pursue.

P3: This is unattainable in this life (virtue and happiness are not perfectly connected).

C: Therefore, we must postulate a transcendental reality (God and an afterlife) where perfect justice is realised.

Alternative formulation (Newman, Lewis):

Objective moral obligations exist; they seem to transcend individual or social conventions and feel like commands. A law requires a lawgiver. The best explanation for universal, binding moral law is a transcendent, personal source – God.

Key challenges:

Euthyphro dilemma: Is an act good because God commands it (making goodness arbitrary) or does God command it because it is good (making God subject to an independent moral standard)?

Moral naturalism: Morality can be fully explained by evolution, social need, empathy, and reason without a supernatural lawgiver.

Non-cognitivism (Ayer) holds that moral statements are merely expressions of emotion, not factual claims, undermining the objective premise.

7. Utilitarianism: The Greatest Happiness Principle |

Bentham’s hedonic calculus theorem:

The right action is that which produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Happiness = pleasure, absence of pain. Use the hedonic calculus: intensity, duration, certainty, propinquity (nearness in time), fecundity (chance of leading to more of the same), purity (chance of not leading to pains), extent (number of people affected).

Mill’s qualitative utilitarianism:

Pleasures differ in quality, not just quantity. Higher pleasures (intellectual, moral, aesthetic) are intrinsically superior to lower ones (bodily pleasures). ‘It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied.’ The higher faculties produce higher pleasure. Competent judges who have experienced both prefer the higher.

Preference utilitarianism (Singer):

The right action satisfies the preferences (interests) of those affected. It avoids pleasure/pain quantification problems. Focuses on the capacity to suffer or have interests.

Key challenges:

Tyranny of the majority: It could justify sacrificing innocents for the greater number (e.g., scapegoating).

Calculus is impractical – we rarely have time or knowledge to calculate all outcomes. It demands too much of a God-like perspective.

Partiality problem: It ignores special duties to family, friends, and promises, treating everyone equally.

8. Situation Ethics: Agape-centred Decision-making |

Fletcher’s core theorem:

There is only one absolute norm: agape (self-giving, unconditional love/Jesus’ commandment ‘Love your neighbour’). The right action is that which serves agapeic love most fully in a given situation. Moral rules, Scripture, and tradition are ‘illuminators’ but not absolute; they may be set aside if, in a particular situation, a different action best expresses love.

Four working principles:

Pragmatism – the proposed action must work toward love’s goal.

Relativism – it avoids words like ‘always’ and ‘never’; rules vary according to the situation’s demand for love.

Positivism – love is posited by faith as the ultimate value; it is not rationally proved.

Personalism – persons, not laws or things, are at the centre; the legalist puts the law first, situationist puts persons first.

Six fundamental propositions (including ‘Love is the only means’, ‘Love and justice are the same’, ‘Love wills the neighbour’s good’).

Key challenges:

Love is too vague – how do we know what love demands in each case? It can lead to inconsistency and personal bias.

It can justify apparently immoral acts (e.g., lying, killing one to save many) if love seems to require it, undermining moral stability.

Pope Pius XII condemned it, as it removes absolute moral laws given by God, leading to relativism and subjectivity.

9. Natural Law: Reason and Purpose in Morality |

Aquinas’s foundation theorem:

God created all things with a purpose (telos). Natural law is the rational creature’s participation in God’s eternal law, knowable through reason. Moral goodness consists in actions that fulfil the natural purposes of human nature.

Synderesis rule:

Good is to be done and pursued, evil avoided. This is the fundamental principle of practical reason.

Primary precepts (theorem of ends):

Preserve life – maintain health and avoid killing the innocent.

Reproduce – ensure the continuation of the species through marriage and procreation.

Educate children – nurture and instruct the young.

Live in an ordered society – obey just laws and promote peace.

Worship God – acknowledge and honour the divine.

Secondary precepts:

Derived rationally from primary precepts; they may change as circumstances vary (e.g., do not drive at excessive speed because it threatens life). Doctrine of double effect: an action with a good and a bad effect is permissible if the intention is only the good effect and the bad effect is not intended or disproportionate.

Key challenges:

Hume’s is–ought gap (naturalistic fallacy
