In Cambridge IGCSE Drama (0411), the Devised Theatre component challenges students to create an original piece of performance from a stimulus, working collaboratively and demonstrating a range of creative, practical and analytical skills. This internally assessed unit is a cornerstone of the course, emphasising the process of theatrical experimentation as much as the final product. Understanding what examiners look for can transform a good devised piece into an excellent one.

1. Understanding Devised Theatre |

Devised theatre is the creation of an original performance where the content, style, structure and meaning emerge from collaborative exploration rather than from a pre-existing script. In the Cambridge context, it is a process-led journey that begins with a stimulus and develops through improvisation, research and refinement. The entire group shares ownership of the piece, and each member is expected to contribute creatively.

2. Assessment Objectives Overview |

The devised piece and its supporting evidence are assessed against three broad objectives: AO1 – Understanding repertoire (how students explore, develop and shape ideas); AO2 – Devising (the creative and collaborative process of turning ideas into performance); and AO3 – Reflecting (the ability to analyse and evaluate both process and product). All three are interwoven, and examiners look for clear evidence of each in the practical work and the working record.

3. Starting Point and Stimulus |

The journey begins with a stimulus, which can be a poem, a photograph, a piece of music, a news article or any other artefact. The group must interrogate the stimulus: what themes, emotions or questions does it provoke? Examiners reward groups who take an original angle, avoiding the most obvious interpretations. Early notes and mind maps should be preserved for the working record.

4. Research and Exploration |

Once initial ideas are sparked, research deepens the material. This might involve investigating historical contexts, interviewing people or studying theatrical styles that could serve the piece. Physical exploration is equally vital: improvisation workshops, character development tasks and spatial experiments help move the work from concept to embodied action. All research should be logged, as it demonstrates AO1 in action.

5. Collaborative Creation Process |

Devised work is fundamentally collaborative. Students must demonstrate they can listen, negotiate, lead and follow within the ensemble. Effective groups establish a shared vocabulary and a safe environment where risk-taking is encouraged. Examiners observe how individuals contribute to group decisions, so evidence of discussion, disagreement and resolution is valuable in the working record.

6. Developing Performance Skills |

As the piece takes shape, each performer must craft a believable character or presence. Vocal variety, physical control, spatial awareness and the ability to react truthfully in the moment are all assessed. The work should show a deliberate use of performance techniques – not mere naturalism but clear choices about pace, stillness, gesture and eye contact. Practitioners like Brecht or Stanislavski can inform these choices, but the application must be personal and coherent.

7. Integrating Design Elements |

Performance is not only about acting. Candidates can be assessed as designers, and even if they perform, the group’s holistic use of design – set, costume, lighting, sound, props – is examined. Design choices must support meaning, not distract. A simple, evocative prop can be more powerful than a cluttered stage. The portfolio should explain why each design element was chosen and how it developed during rehearsal.

8. Structuring the Performance |

A well-devised piece needs a clear dramatic structure. It should have exposition, rising tension, climax and resolution – not necessarily in a linear form, but with a deliberate arc that holds the audience’s engagement. Transitions between scenes, use of time shifts and the rhythm of movement and dialogue all contribute to structure. Groups are encouraged to experiment with non-naturalistic forms, such as episodic structure, montage or circular narratives, as long as the audience can follow the intended journey.

9. Reflective Portfolio or Working Record |

The working record is a mandatory document that tracks the entire devising process. It can take the form of a written log, a blog, a video diary or a scrapbook, but it must be individual and show personal insight. Strong portfolios include annotated research, records of key decisions, rehearsal discoveries, challenges faced and solutions found. Reflections should be analytical, not merely descriptive: what worked, what didn’t, and why? Links to assessment objectives must be explicit.

10. Assessment Criteria and Marking |

The Devised component is internally assessed by the teacher and moderated externally. The performance is marked out of 30, and the working record out of 20, giving a total of 50 marks. The performance criteria focus on clarity of intentions, use of performance/design skills, cohesion of the group, and communication to an audience. The working record is judged on quality of research, depth of reflection, and the ability to evaluate both the creative process and the final outcome.

11. Rehearsal and Final Performance |

The rehearsal period is a test of discipline and growth. Groups should keep a rehearsal schedule, use warm-up routines effectively and document how the piece evolved. The final performance must be presented to an audience and recorded for moderation. Technical elements should be cued precisely, and performers must demonstrate adaptability if anything goes wrong. The performance is not expected to be a polished West End production, but it must show commitment, creativity and an embodied understanding of the devised material.

12. Tips for Success |

Start recording from day one – retrospection often loses detail. Keep the stimulus alive throughout the process, returning to it when the piece loses focus. Ensure every member has a clear role and contributes to decision-making. In the working record, write in first person, be honest about difficulties, and explain how they were overcome. Finally, remember that examiners are interested in the journey: a piece that grows from genuine experimentation, even if imperfect, will always score higher than a safe, predictable presentation.
