Welcome to your Year 11 Edexcel GCSE Philosophy revision guide. This article condenses the essential themes, arguments, and ethical theories you need to master for the exam. We will walk through the Design Argument, the problem of evil, key ethical systems, and more. Each point is presented in both English and Chinese to strengthen your understanding and recall.

1. The Design Argument (Teleological Argument) |

The Design Argument claims that the complexity and order in the universe point to an intelligent designer, understood as God. William Paley used the watchmaker analogy: if you find a watch on a heath, you infer a watchmaker because of its intricate parts working together for a purpose. Similarly, the universe, with its natural laws and organised structures, suggests a divine designer.

David Hume criticised the argument by pointing out that the universe resembles a living organism more than a machine, and that even if there is a designer, it does not prove the God of classical theism. The argument is inductive, meaning the conclusion is only probable, not certain.

In Edexcel, you need to evaluate strengths such as its appeal to observable evidence and weaknesses like the existence of apparent imperfections in nature. A designer might be plural, imperfect, or a group of gods – this is the ‘epicurean hypothesis’.

2. The Cosmological Argument |

The Cosmological Argument seeks to prove God’s existence from the fact that the universe exists. Thomas Aquinas presented the ‘First Cause’ argument: everything in motion or that comes into being has a cause; an infinite chain of causes is impossible; therefore, there must be a first uncaused cause, which is God.

Another version is the Argument from Contingency, which says that everything that exists is contingent (dependent on something else for its existence). The universe as a whole is contingent, so there must be a necessary being that depends on nothing else – God.

Critics like Bertrand Russell argued that just because each part of the universe has a cause, it does not mean the universe as a whole needs a cause – that is the fallacy of composition. Also, why should we call the first cause ‘God’? It might just be a brute fact.

3. Religious Experience |

A religious experience is a direct encounter with the divine or a feeling of absolute dependence on a greater power. William James identified four marks of mystical experience: ineffability (cannot be described in words), noetic quality (provides deep insight), transiency (lasts a short time), and passivity (the person feels taken over by a higher power).

Corporate religious experiences, like worship at a pilgrimage site, are shared by a group. The argument from religious experience states that because so many people across cultures report similar experiences, it is reasonable to believe in a transcendent reality. However, the challenge is that these experiences can be explained psychologically or neurologically, without needing a supernatural cause.

Swinburne’s Principle of Credulity suggests we should accept what appears to be the case unless we have good reason to doubt it. Against this, the Principle of Testimony urges us to believe what sincere witnesses tell us. You must weigh whether such principles are sufficient to establish theism.

4. The Problem of Evil |

The problem of evil is the strongest challenge to belief in an omnipotent, omnibenevolent God. If God is all-powerful, he can prevent evil; if all-loving, he would want to. Yet evil exists. This is called the logical problem of evil, famously formulated by Epicurus and later by J.L. Mackie.

The evidential problem of evil, developed by William Rowe, points to the sheer quantity and apparent pointless nature of suffering, such as intense animal suffering. It suggests that even if some evil is necessary for a greater good, the amount of evil in the world seems far more than required.

Theodicies attempt to justify God’s permission of evil. The Free Will Defence says that moral evil results from human misuse of free will, and a world with free beings is more valuable than one without. The Soul-Making Theodicy (Irenaeus/Hick) sees suffering as necessary for spiritual growth and developing virtues.

5. Utilitarianism |

Utilitarianism is a consequentialist ethical theory, meaning the right action is judged by its outcomes. Jeremy Bentham’s Act Utilitarianism uses the principle of utility: the greatest happiness for the greatest number. He proposed the hedonic calculus to measure pleasure and pain based on intensity, duration, certainty, propinquity, fecundity, purity, and extent.

John Stuart Mill modified utilitarianism by distinguishing higher pleasures (intellectual, moral) from lower pleasures (bodily). He argued that ‘it is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied’. Rule Utilitarianism focuses on following general rules that tend to produce the greatest good, rather than calculating each action.

Key weaknesses include minority oppression, the difficulty of predicting consequences, and the challenge of measuring happiness. Strengths are its practicality, democratic nature, and focus on real-world outcomes. In exams, you will apply utilitarianism to issues like stealing, lying, or social justice.

6. Situation Ethics |

Situation Ethics, developed by Joseph Fletcher, is a Christian ethical theory based on one absolute rule: agape (unconditional, selfless love). It is a middle way between legalism (rigid rules) and antinomianism (no rules). The only intrinsic good is love; nothing else is inherently right or wrong.

Fletcher set out four working principles: pragmatism (it must work in practice), relativism (actions depend on the situation), positivism (love is posited by faith), and personalism (people come first, not rules). He also gave six fundamental propositions, such as ‘only love is always good’ and ‘love’s decisions are made situationally, not prescriptively’.

Strengths include flexibility and emphasis on compassion. Weaknesses include subjectivity and the potential for chaos – how do we know what love truly demands in a complex situation? For Edexcel, you must evaluate whether situation ethics is a better guide than utilitarian calculation or duty-based ethics.

7. Medical Ethics: Abortion |

Abortion raises the question of when life begins and how to balance the mother’s rights with the potential life of the foetus. The law in England and Wales (Abortion Act 1967, amended 1990) allows abortion up to 24 weeks if continuing the pregnancy risks physical or mental health, and later if there is risk to the mother’s life or severe foetal disability.

Pro-life arguments often use the sanctity of life principle: life is a gift from God and only God should take it. The foetus is a person from conception with full rights. Pro-choice arguments emphasise women’s bodily autonomy and the concept of personhood acquiring gradually, perhaps with viability or consciousness.

Utilitarians might weigh the happiness of the mother and child if born into unwanted circumstances. Situation ethics would ask what the most loving action is in the specific context. You must be able to apply and evaluate each approach.

8. Medical Ethics: Euthanasia |

Euthanasia is the deliberate ending of a person’s life to relieve suffering. It can be voluntary (patient requests), non-voluntary (patient cannot consent), or involuntary (patient does not consent). Active euthanasia involves a direct action, like a lethal injection; passive euthanasia involves withdrawing treatment.

The doctrine of double effect allows a doctor to give pain relief that may shorten life as a side effect, provided the intention is to relieve pain, not to kill. This is legally permitted. The slippery slope argument warns that legalising euthanasia could lead to devaluing the lives of the vulnerable.

Quality of life arguments support euthanasia: if a life is dominated by suffering without dignity, it is not worth living. The sanctity of life position holds that only God can end a life. The Edexcel exam expects you to compare these perspectives and apply ethical theories.

9. Just War Theory |

Just War Theory provides criteria for deciding when a war is morally justified (jus ad bellum) and how it should be conducted (jus in bello). The main jus ad bellum criteria are: just cause, legitimate authority, right intention, last resort, reasonable chance of success, and proportionality of ends.

Jus in bello principles include discrimination (non-combatants must be protected) and proportionality (the force used must be proportional to the military goal). Nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons pose a special challenge to these principles because of indiscriminate effects.

Pacifism opposes all war, believing it is always wrong. Conditional pacifism accepts war only under extreme necessity. Realism argues that war is a matter of power and national interest, not morality. In your revision, be ready to evaluate whether Just War Theory still works in an age of asymmetric warfare.

10. Justice and Human Rights |

Social justice concerns the fair distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society. John Rawls proposed the ‘veil of ignorance’ thought experiment: imagine designing a society without knowing your own position in it; this leads to principles that protect the least well-off, because you could be that person.

Human rights are universal moral rights that every person possesses simply by being human. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) includes rights to life, liberty, education, and freedom from torture. These rights are often seen as inalienable and foundational for a just society.

The idea of positive rights requires others to act (e.g. provision of healthcare), while negative rights require others only to refrain from interfering (e.g. freedom of speech). Some argue that human rights are merely Western constructs. You will need to discuss whether justice demands equality of outcome or equality of opportunity, and whether rights can be weighed against collective good.
