1. Course Overview and Syllabus Structure |

The Cambridge IGCSE Philosophy syllabus (code 0409) is designed to introduce students to the fundamental problems and methods of philosophy. It is assessed through two written papers at the end of Year 11. Paper 1 covers ‘Knowledge and Reality’ and includes topics such as the nature of knowledge, perception, and the mind-body problem. Paper 2 covers ‘Moral and Political Philosophy’ and explores ethical theories, justice, and rights. Understanding the structure early on helps you plan your revision and focus on what matters most.

  • Paper 1: Knowledge and Reality – 1 hour 45 minutes, 50% of total marks.
  • Paper 2: Moral and Political Philosophy – 1 hour 45 minutes, 50% of total marks.
  • All questions are essay-based, requiring you to present and evaluate arguments.

2. What Is Philosophy? |

Philosophy comes from the Greek words ‘philo’ (love) and ‘sophia’ (wisdom), meaning the love of wisdom. In practice, it is the activity of examining the most basic concepts that underpin our everyday thoughts: truth, knowledge, existence, morality, and meaning. Unlike science, which relies on experiments and observation, philosophy proceeds through logical reasoning and conceptual analysis. Philosophers ask ‘What is X?’ and ‘Why should we believe Y?’, seeking clarity and justification rather than new factual discoveries.

For example, a philosopher might ask ‘What is justice?’ rather than ‘How many prisoners are in jail?’. This distinction is crucial because philosophical questions are not settled by mere empirical data; they require us to reflect on the principles and values that shape our understanding of the world.

As a Year 10 student, you are about to become part of this long tradition of inquiry. Do not worry about having all the answers; the process of questioning itself is what makes philosophy valuable.

3. The Four Branches of Philosophy |

Although the IGCSE syllabus focuses on specific themes, it is helpful to know the four traditional branches of philosophy. This map will help you see where each topic fits into the bigger picture.

What is knowledge? How do we know what we know? Knowledge, belief, perception (Paper 1)
What is there? What is reality? Mind and body, personal identity (Paper 1)
Ethics / 伦理学 How should we live? What is right and wrong? Utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics (Paper 2)
Logic / 逻辑 What makes a good argument? How can we reason correctly? Underpins all essays and evaluation

Take some time this summer to browse an introductory philosophy textbook or reliable online resource, mapping the IGCSE topics to these four areas. Doing so will give you a solid conceptual framework before your lessons even begin.

4. Key Skills: Analysis and Evaluation |

In IGCSE Philosophy, you are not only expected to describe theories but also to analyse and evaluate them critically. Analysis means breaking down a concept or argument into its constituent parts and seeing how they work together. Evaluation means making a reasoned judgement about the strengths and weaknesses of a position.

For example, if you study Plato’s theory of Forms, you might analyse his argument for a separate realm of perfect Forms, then evaluate whether this really solves the problem of universals or whether it raises new difficulties, such as the ‘third man’ argument. Becoming comfortable with such two‑step thinking early on will dramatically improve your essay writing.

Practise this summer by taking a simple claim like ‘We should always keep our promises’ and writing a few paragraphs that first explain what it means and then assess whether it is universally true. You might consider counterexamples, underlying assumptions, and logical implications.

5. How to Construct an Argument |

At the heart of philosophy lies the argument. An argument is not a quarrel but a set of statements where some (premises) are offered as reasons to support another (the conclusion). A good argument is both valid and sound. Validity means that if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. Soundness means that the argument is valid and all its premises are actually true.

Consider this simple argument:

Premise 1: All humans are mortal.

Premise 2: Socrates is a human.

Conclusion: Therefore, Socrates is mortal.

This argument is valid (the conclusion follows logically) and sound (both premises are true).

In your essays, you will be expected to present your own arguments and also to reconstruct the arguments of philosophers like Descartes or Bentham. Practice identifying premises and conclusions in newspaper editorials or everyday discussions; it is the single most useful habit you can develop before starting Year 10.

6. Logic and Fallacies |

Sound reasoning requires avoiding common logical fallacies. A fallacy is an error in reasoning that weakens an argument. By learning to spot them, you will both strengthen your own writing and critique others more effectively. Some fallacies you might encounter in IGCSE Philosophy include:

Straw Man Misrepresenting someone’s argument to make it easier to attack. /
Begging the Question Arguing in a circle, assuming what you are trying to prove. /
Ad Hominem Attacking the person instead of their argument. /
False Dilemma Presenting only two options when more exist. /

Familiarise yourself with these fallacies using online quizzes or by analysing political speeches. Recognising a straw man in a moral debate will enable you to point out that the argument has been twisted, which is a powerful critical tool in Paper 2.

7. Introduction to Epistemology |

One of the first Paper 1 topics is epistemology, the study of knowledge. The classic definition of knowledge, dating back to Plato, is ‘justified true belief’. In other words, you know a proposition P if you believe P, P is true, and you have good reasons (justification) for believing P. However, in 1963, Edmund Gettier published a short paper showing cases where someone has a justified true belief but we still would not say they truly know. These ‘Gettier cases’ have sparked decades of debate.

As you prepare over the summer, try to think of your own examples where someone seems to have a justified true belief but lacks real knowledge. Also, begin to distinguish between ‘a priori’ knowledge (independent of experience, such as ‘2+2=4’) and ‘a posteriori’ knowledge (dependent on experience, such as ‘The cat is on the mat’). These distinctions will be central to your first term.

8. Introduction to Ethics |

In Paper 2, you will study moral philosophy, which asks how we should act and what makes actions right or wrong. Three major theories dominate the syllabus: Utilitarianism, Kantian ethics (deontology), and Virtue Ethics.

Utilitarianism, associated with Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill, holds that the right action is the one that maximises happiness for the greatest number. It focuses on consequences. By contrast, Immanuel Kant’s deontology argues that certain actions are intrinsically right or wrong regardless of their outcomes; for Kant, we should always treat people as ends in themselves, never merely as means. Virtue Ethics, rooted in Aristotle, shifts the focus from actions to the character of the person: a virtuous action is what a virtuous person would do.

A great summer activity is to watch a film or read a news story and then discuss it using each of the three theories in turn. How would a utilitarian, a Kantian, and a virtue ethicist judge the protagonist’s choice? This simple exercise brings abstract theories to life.

9. Introduction to Metaphysics |

Metaphysics deals with the fundamental nature of reality. For IGCSE, the most relevant topics are the mind-body problem and personal identity. The mind-body problem asks: What is the relationship between our mental states (thoughts, feelings) and our physical brain and body? Are they the same substance (physicalism), or is the mind a separate, non-physical substance (dualism)? Substance dualism, famously defended by René Descartes, claims that the mind and body are distinct entities. Physicalism argues that everything, including the mind, is physical.

Personal identity asks what makes you the same person over time. Is it your memories (psychological continuity theory, associated with John Locke), your physical body, or something else? These questions are not just abstract; they arise in practical contexts like medical ethics and law.

To get ahead, try to articulate your own view on these issues before reading the philosophers. Write down what you think makes you the ‘same’ person you were five years ago. Your initial intuitions will serve as a valuable touchstone when you later study the academic texts.
