1. The Elements of Music |

All analysis in Eduqas Music stems from the elements of music. Being able to describe melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, structure, timbre, dynamics and tempo with precise vocabulary is the key to high marks in appraising. The acronym ‘DR SMITH’ (Dynamics, Rhythm, Structure, Melody, Instrumentation/Timbre, Texture, Harmony) helps you remember the most important areas to comment on.

A succession of single notes forming a recognisable tune. May be described by its shape (ascending, descending, arch, stepwise/leaping, scalic), range, phrasing, ornamentation (trill, mordent, turn, appoggiatura, acciaccatura) and articulation (legato, staccato).
The vertical combination of notes. Key terms include major/minor tonality, chord types (major, minor, diminished, augmented, seventh), primary triads I, IV, V, cadences (perfect V–I, imperfect I–V, plagal IV–I, interrupted V–vi), modulation, consonance/dissonance.
Rhythm describes the arrangement of notes in time; tempo is the speed (allegro, andante, largo, presto); metre is the grouping of beats (simple duple/triple/quadruple, compound). Recognise syncopation, dotted rhythms, triplets, cross-rhythms, rubato and anacrusis.
How musical layers relate. Monophonic (single line), homophonic (melody with chords), polyphonic (two or more independent lines), heterophonic (simultaneous variations of one melody), unison/octaves, melody and accompaniment.
The overall plan of a piece. Common forms: binary AB, ternary ABA, rondo ABACA, theme and variations, strophic (verse-repeating), through-composed, 12-bar blues, sonata form.

The unique sound quality of voices and instruments. Families: strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass), woodwind (flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon), brass (trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba), percussion (tuned: timpani, xylophone; untuned: snare drum, cymbals), keyboard (piano, organ, harpsichord). Voice types: soprano, alto, tenor, bass (SATB).

2. Notation and Theory Essentials |

You need to read and interpret staff notation in both treble and bass clefs, understand key signatures up to four sharps and flats, and recognise intervals (major, minor, perfect, augmented, diminished). This theoretical knowledge directly supports your performance and composition coursework.

A key signature tells us the tonal centre. For example, one sharp is G major/E minor, two sharps D major/B minor, one flat F major/D minor. Harmonic and melodic minor scales are to be distinguished. Circle of fifths relationships help you spot modulations. Chord symbols and Roman numerals (e.g. I, IV, V⁷, ii) are used frequently. You should also know how to write a simple chord progression using primary and secondary triads.

Typical cadential progressions: I – IV – V – I (perfect cadence ending) | IV – I (plagal) | I – V (imperfect) | V – vi (interrupted)

常用终止式进行:I – IV – V – I(正格终止结尾)| IV – I(变格)| I – V(半终止)| V – vi(阻碍终止)

Rhythm notation includes semibreves, minims, crotchets, quavers, semiquavers and their equivalent rests. Dotted notes, ties and tuplets (triplets, duplets) must be interpreted accurately. Time signatures such as 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, 6/8, 9/8 and irregular metres like 5/4 appear across exam extracts.

3. Musical Forms and Devices (AoS1) |

Area of Study 1 focuses on musical forms and devices in the Western Classical Tradition from 1650 to 1910. Recognising structural plans and compositional techniques allows you to track how composers manipulate material. The main forms include binary, ternary, rondo, theme and variations, strophic and through-composed songs, minuet and trio, and sonata form.

Sonata form is essential for the Classical and Romantic eras. It has three main sections: exposition (introduces first subject in tonic, second subject in a related key, often dominant or relative major), development (manipulates motives, explores distant keys), and recapitulation (restates both subjects in the tonic). A coda may conclude the movement.

Common devices include sequence (repetition of a melodic pattern at a higher or lower pitch), imitation, canon, ostinato, drone, pedal note, inverted pedal, appoggiatura and other ornaments. Cadenza passages offer soloistic display. These devices frequently appear in the set works and unfamiliar listening extracts.

4. Baroque Music (1600–1750) |

The Baroque period laid foundations for functional harmony and contrapuntal writing. Key features include basso continuo (harpsichord + cello/bassoon providing harmonic support), terraced dynamics, heavily ornamented melody, and motoric rhythms. Typical forms: binary dance suites (e.g. allemande, courante, sarabande, gigue), fugue, concerto grosso and da capo aria.

Melody Ornamented (trills, mordents), sequential, often long and flowing.
Harmony Major-minor system established; circle of fifths; perfect cadences confirm key.
Texture Polyphonic/contrapuntal (fugue), with basso continuo.
Instruments Harpsichord, organ, small string orchestra, recorder, natural trumpet, timpani.
Dynamics Terraced; sudden shifts between loud and soft.
Representative Genres Concerto grosso, solo concerto, oratorio, cantata, suite.

5. The Classical Era (1750–1820) |

The Classical period prized balance, clarity and formal elegance. Melodies became more periodic with clear phrases and question-answer (antecedent-consequent) structures. Homophonic texture dominated, and the orchestra expanded to include a full woodwind section, horns and trumpets, with the piano replacing the harpsichord as the main keyboard instrument.

Dynamic markings such as crescendo and diminuendo became commonplace, allowing gradual transitions. Alberti bass, broken-chord accompaniment patterns and simple triadic harmony are typical. The symphony, sonata, string quartet and concerto emerged as the most important genres. Exposure to the sonata-allegro form is especially important for Eduqas exam extracts.
