📚 Year 11 AQA Media Studies: Key Theories & Formulas Quick Reference Handbook | AQA 媒体研究:关键理论与公式速查手册

This handbook condenses the essential theories and analytical ‘formulas’ required for the AQA GCSE Media Studies specification. Each concept is presented as a clear model that you can memorise and apply to any unseen text, from film posters to newspaper front pages.

本手册浓缩了AQA GCSE媒体研究课程必备的核心理论与分析“公式”。每个概念都提炼为清晰的模型,你可以直接记忆并应用到任何陌生文本中——从电影海报到报纸头版,从此分析有章可循。

1. Semiotics Foundations: Signifier and Signified | 符号学基础:能指与所指

The basic building block of meaning, according to Saussure and Barthes, is the sign. A sign is made up of a signifier (the physical form – a word, image, sound) and a signified (the mental concept it triggers).

根据索绪尔和巴特的符号学,意义的基本构件是符号。一个符号由能指(物理形式——词语、图像、声音)和所指(它触发的心理概念)组成。

Barthes took this further by showing how signs operate on two levels. The combination of a signifier and signified produces a denotative sign, which then becomes the signifier for a second, connotative meaning rooted in culture.

巴特进一步揭示了符号在两个层面上运作。能指与所指的结合产生外延符号,而这个外延符号又成为第二层内涵意义的能指,内涵意义深深根植于文化之中。

Sign = Signifier + Signified → Denotation → Connotation (Barthes’ second-order signification)

符号 = 能指 + 所指 → 外延 → 内涵(巴特的第二层意指)

2. Denotation and Connotation: Reading the Layers | 明示义与隐含义:解读层次

Denotation is the literal, ‘what you see’ description of a media element. It is the objective, dictionary-level meaning of an image, colour, or word without cultural baggage.

明示义是媒体元素的字面描述,即“你看到了什么”。它是图像、颜色或词语在字典层面的客观意义,不附加任何文化色彩。

Connotation is the associated, cultural meaning that flows from the denotation. It is the emotional or ideological interpretation—for instance, a red rose connotes love and passion, while a clock ticking connotes urgency or mortality.

隐含义是从明示义延伸出来的关联文化意义。它是带有情感或意识形态的解读——例如,红玫瑰隐含爱情与激情,而滴答作响的时钟则隐含紧迫或死亡。

In your exam, always link denotation to connotation using the formula: ‘The close-up of the clenched fist (denotation) connotes anger, determination, and a fighting spirit.’ This pairing is the foundation of all media analysis at GCSE.

在考试中,务必用公式将明示义与隐含义联系起来:“握紧拳头的特写(明示义)隐含愤怒、决心和战斗精神。” 这种配对是GCSE中所有媒体分析的基础。

3. Todorov’s Narrative Equilibrium | 托多罗夫叙事平衡理论

Tzvetan Todorov proposed that most linear narratives follow a five-stage structure. This formula helps you analyse the story arc of any moving image product, from a television drama to an advertisement.

茨维坦·托多罗夫提出,大多数线性叙事遵循五阶段结构。运用这一公式,你可以分析从电视剧到广告的任何动态影像产品的故事弧线。

The model begins with a stable equilibrium. An event disrupts this, leading to recognition of the disruption, then an attempt to repair the damage, and finally a new equilibrium that restores order, often changed from the original.

这个模型起始于一种稳定的平衡状态。某事件打破平衡,导致对失衡的认知,随后是修复损害的努力,最终达到一个恢复秩序的新平衡,但往往与初始状态不同。

Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to Repair → New Equilibrium

平衡 → 打破平衡 → 认知失衡 → 试图修复 → 新平衡

In a news broadcast, for example, the headlines often establish a disrupted equilibrium (crime, political chaos), the report recognises the disruption, and the concluding segment attempts to restore equilibrium through resolution or a feel-good story.

例如,在新闻广播中,头条通常建立一个被打破的平衡(犯罪、政治混乱),报道内容认知失衡,而结尾部分通过事件解决或暖心故事试图恢复平衡。

4. Propp’s Character Functions | 普罗普角色类型

Vladimir Propp studied hundreds of Russian folk tales and identified seven recurring character types, or ‘functions’. These can be applied like a formula to decode roles in any narrative media text.

弗拉基米尔·普罗普研究了数以百计的俄罗斯民间故事,归纳出七种反复出现的角色类型,或称“功能”。你可以像套用公式一样,用它们解码任何叙事媒体文本中的角色。

Character Type Function 角色类型
The Hero Seeks something, restores equilibrium 英雄
The Villain Opposes the hero, causes disruption 反派
The Dispatcher Sends the hero on the quest 派遣者
The Donor Prepares the hero or gives a magical object 赠予者
The Helper Assists the hero on the journey 帮手
The Princess / Prize Object of the hero’s desire, often needs rescue 公主/奖赏
The False Hero Takes credit initially but is exposed 伪英雄

When analysing a film trailer or a magazine adventure serial, identify which characters slot into these roles. Propp’s theory proves that modern media still rely on centuries-old narrative recipes.

当你分析电影预告片或杂志冒险连载时,找出现有角色分别对应哪些类型。普罗普的理论证明,现代媒体依然依赖流传数个世纪的叙事配方。

5. Lévi-Strauss’ Binary Oppositions | 列维-斯特劳斯二元对立

Claude Lévi-Strauss argued that narratives are structured through a system of binary oppositions—pairs of mutually exclusive concepts that create conflict and meaning. The tension between opposites drives the story forward.

克洛德·列维-斯特劳斯认为,叙事是通过二元对立系统构建的——成对出现的互斥概念创造出冲突与意义。对立面之间的张力推动了故事前进。

Common oppositions include: good vs. evil, humanity vs. technology, rich vs. poor, youth vs. age, nature vs. civilisation, and male vs. female. In a superhero film, the hero and villain embody a moral opposition, while the setting often reflects an urban vs. natural opposition.

常见的对立包括:善与恶、人性与科技、富与贫、青春与衰老、自然与文明、男性与女性。在超级英雄电影中,英雄和反派体现着道德对立,而场景设置往往反映出城市与自然的对立。

Use this as a formula when studying set texts like newspaper front pages: ‘The headline presents a binary opposition between “hardworking taxpayers” and “benefit cheats”, constructing a sense of us vs. them.’ This instantly adds depth to your media language analysis.

可将此作为分析报纸头版等固定文本的公式:“这则头条呈现了‘勤劳纳税人’与‘福利骗子’之间的二元对立,建构出一种‘我们与他们’的冲突感。” 这能立刻提升你媒体语言分析的深度。

6. Stuart Hall’s Representation Theory | 斯图尔特·霍尔的表征理论

Stuart Hall maintained that representation is the process by which meaning is produced and exchanged through language, signs and images. It is not a mirror of reality, but a construction.

斯图尔特·霍尔主张,表征是通过语言、符号和图像生产并交换意义的过程。它不是现实的镜子,而是一种建构。

Media representations rely on stereotypes to communicate quickly. A stereotype reduces a person to a few exaggerated traits and is often used to reflect society’s dominant ideologies. The formula is: repeated representations → naturalised stereotypes → the feeling that these are ‘how things are’.

媒体表征依赖刻板印象来快速传递信息。刻板印象将人简化为少数几个被夸大的特征,通常用来反映社会的主流意识形态。其公式为:重复性的表征 → 自然化的刻板印象 → 让人觉得“事情本就如此”。

Challenge yourself to ask: who is represented, in what way, and whose interests does this serve? For an AQA exam answer, linking specific visual codes to Hall’s theory shows you understand that the media does not just present, it constructs reality.

挑战自己提问:谁被表征了?以何种方式?这又服务于谁的利益?在AQA考试答案中,将具体的视觉符码与霍尔的理论联系起来,表明你理解媒体并非仅仅呈现现实,而是在建构现实。

7. Uses and Gratifications Model | 使用与满足模型

Blumler and Katz shifted the question from ‘what do media do to audiences?’ to ‘what do audiences do with media?’ This model assumes an active audience that consciously selects media to satisfy needs.

布卢姆勒与卡茨将问题从“媒体对受众做了什么”转变为“受众用媒体做了什么”。该模型假设受众是主动的,他们有意识地选择媒体来满足自身需求。

The four key gratifications form a memorable formula: Information (surveillance, learning about the world), Personal Identity (reinforcing values, role models), Social Interaction (connecting with others, discussing media), and Entertainment (escape, relaxation, enjoyment).

四种关键满足构成一个便于记忆的公式:信息(监视环境、了解世界)、个人身份(强化价值观、寻求榜样)、社会互动(与他人联结、讨论媒体内容)和娱乐(逃避、放松、享受)。

When writing about why a particular social media platform or music video appeals to its target audience, tick off these four gratifications. For example, a gaming livestream offers information (tips), personal identity (being a gamer), social interaction (live chat), and entertainment (humour, gameplay).

当阐述某个社交媒体平台或音乐视频为何吸引其目标受众时,请勾选这四项满足。例如,游戏直播提供信息(攻略)、个人身份(成为玩家)、社会互动(实时聊天)和娱乐(幽默、游戏画面)。

8. Hall’s Encoding/Decoding & Reception Theory | 编码/解码与接受理论

Stuart Hall’s Encoding/Decoding model argues that media producers encode intended meanings (preferred readings), but audiences do not always accept them passively. They decode texts according to their own backgrounds.

斯图尔特·霍尔的编码/解码模型指出,媒体生产者将意图意义(优势解读)编码进文本,但受众并非总是被动接受。他们会根据自身背景对文本进行解码。

This produces three audience positions, which we can use as a checklist: Dominant/Hegemonic Reading (audience fully accepts the intended meaning), Negotiated Reading (audience partly accepts but modifies it), and Oppositional Reading (audience rejects the meaning entirely).

这产生了三种受众立场,我们可将其用作核查清单:主导/霸权式解读(受众完全接受意图意义)、协商式解读(受众部分接受但加以修改)、对抗式解读(受众彻底拒绝该意义)。

Apply this formula to any media product. For instance, a patriotic war film may encode a ‘support our troops’ message. A veteran’s audience might take a dominant reading, a pacifist might take a negotiated reading (appreciate the cinematography but reject the politics), and an anti-war protestor might take an oppositional reading.

将此公式应用于任何媒体产品。例如,一部爱国战争片可能编码“支持我们的军队”这一信息。老兵群体可能采取主导解读,和平主义者可能采取协商式解读(欣赏摄影但拒绝政治观点),而反战示威者可能采取对抗式解读。

9. Media Language: Camera Shots, Angles & Composition | 媒体语言:镜头、角度与构图公式

Visual media language operates through a grammar of shots and angles that can be learned like any formula. Each camera choice carries codified connotations that you can reliably decode in the exam.

视觉媒体语言通过一套镜头与角度的语法运作,这套语法可以像任何公式一样学习。每种镜头选择都携带着编码化的隐含义,你在考试中可以可靠地解码。

Shot sizes can be simplified as a scale of intimacy: Extreme Close-Up (emotion, tension) → Close-Up (character engagement) → Medium Shot (personal relationships) → Long Shot (setting, isolation) → Extreme Long Shot (spectacle, scale).

景别可以简化为一个亲密度标尺:大特写(情绪、紧张)→ 特写(角色参与感)→ 中景(人物关系)→ 远景(环境、孤立感)→ 大远景(奇观、规模)。

Camera angles also follow clear patterns: a High Angle looks down, making the subject appear vulnerable; a Low Angle looks up, granting power; an Eye-Level angle suggests equality; and a Dutch/Canted angle creates disorientation and unease.

摄像机角度同样遵循清晰模式:俯拍角度向下看,使主体显得脆弱;仰拍角度向上看,赋予权力感;平视角度意味着平等;倾斜角度则制造迷失方向与不安。

Combine these with composition rules like the Rule of Thirds and you have a complete analytical toolkit. Remember the formula: identify the shot/angle → state the denotation → explain the connotation → link to audience effect.

将这些与三分法等构图规则结合起来,你就拥有了完整的分析工具箱。记住这个公式:识别镜头/角度 → 陈述明示义 → 解释隐含义 → 联系受众效果。

10. The AIDA Formula for Advertising | 广告的AIDA公式

AIDA is a long-established persuasive formula used in advertising and marketing media to guide the design of a piece from initial contact through to purchase. It remains highly relevant to your study of print adverts, posters, and online promotions.

AIDA 是一个历史悠久的说服公式,在广告与营销媒体中用于引导从最初接触到最终购买的全过程设计。在学习平面广告、海报和网络推广时,它仍然高度适用。

The acronym stands for Attention, Interest, Desire, Action. The formula works sequentially: first grab the audience’s Attention with a striking visual or headline, then build Interest with key features, next create Desire by appealing to lifestyle or emotional needs, and finally prompt a specific Action.

这个缩略词代表注意(Attention)、兴趣(Interest)、欲望(Desire)和行动(Action)。它按顺序发挥作用:先用醒目的画面或标题抓住观众的注意,然后用核心卖点建立兴趣,接着通过诉诸生活方式或情感需求创造欲望,最后促使具体行动。

A (Attention) → I (Interest) → D (Desire) → A (Action)

A(注意)→ I(兴趣)→ D(欲望)→ A(行动)

When analysing an AQA set product like a charity advertisement, you can literally draw the AIDA ladder over the layout: the shocking image captures Attention, the statistics fuel Interest, the human story builds Desire to help, and the phone number/website provides the clear call to Action.

在分析AQA的指定作品,例如慈善广告时,你完全可以沿着排版画出AIDA阶梯:震撼的图像捕捉注意,统计数据激发兴趣,真实故事建立帮助的欲望,电话号码或网站则提供了清晰的行动号召。

11. Curran and Seaton: Power and Media Industries | 柯伦与西顿:权力与媒体产业

Curran and Seaton’s theory explores how the concentration of media ownership limits diversity and creativity. Their work is essential for any discussion of media institutions and industries in the AQA exam.

柯伦和西顿的理论探讨了媒体所有权的集中如何限制多样性与创造力。在AQA考试中,任何关于媒体制度与产业的讨论都离不开他们的学说。

The core formula is: concentrated ownership → profit-driven, risk-averse content → narrow range of perspectives. When fewer corporations control more outlets, the media tends to produce repetitive, formulaic products that serve the interests of the powerful elite.

核心公式是:集中所有权 → 追求利润、回避风险的内容 → 窄化的观点范围。当越来越少的企业控制着越来越多的传播渠道时,媒体倾向于生产重复的、公式化的产品,服务于权势精英的利益。

However, the internet and indie sector offer a counter-balance. Apply this in your answer by contrasting a major Hollywood studio blockbuster (concentrated ownership, high concept, safe) with an independent, crowd-funded film (diverse ownership, niche, innovative). This immediately demonstrates sophisticated understanding.

然而,互联网与独立产业提供了一种制衡。在答题时,将好莱坞大制片厂的大片(所有权集中、高概念、安全)与独立众筹电影(所有权分散、小众、创新)进行对比,立刻展现出你对复杂问题的深刻理解。
